Hyenas are only scared of male lions

Filmed in the Kruger park by Brent Schnupp, where he managed to watch this amazing interaction between elephants and hyenas and lions and hyenas.
Hyenas will flee when they see one male lion but fight when they see four lionesses reason being they know that male lions will fight to the death for something they believe its theirs, while lionesses will flee to avoid injuries. in this sighting its the hyenas who chose to flee from a kill they had originally stole from the lions but there was relatively little late to interest the lions.

There is good reason for this. It's not so much that the males are bigger, but that they are much more aggressive. The female will drive the hyena's off and not chase them down. If a male lion catches a hyena… game over. They say a lioness can hold off about 4 or 5 hyenas. But I saw a footage of 2 males take on a clan of over 20. And the clan ran away.

What makes the hyenas so successful is not just their determined tenacity and the ability to intimidate leopards, cheetahs and lionesses, but also their ability to retreat and take evasive action when necessary. They will take risks but are shrewd enough to stay well clear of the male lions. Here the hyenas are exercising patience while summing up the opposition!

More likely she is just full (it's their kill apparently) and getting her pregnant is the aim (her aim, she starts and ends any tryst, by the time she calls a halt, he'll be quite happy about it). I've seen a pair mate at 6-minute intervals.

Male loins in the beginning of their years have to hunt, fight, and think out problems on their own. It forces him to be faster, stronger, and smarter than the female. His only threat is other male lions. He would be used to taking on packs of hyenas on his own. It is natures way of making biology more effective. Just as they started to high-tail-it-out-of-there, their necks lifted up acknowledging the King's arrival, you could hear the hyenas buzzing nervously like a hive of angry bees. They are such a vocal animal. Either with their bizarre nervous laughter or this buzzing.
