Always one of my top 5 shooters -- I can't quite put my finger on what makes it so fun. This game is so much more than the sum of its parts. Saturn Mode is amazing, and I love the feeling of flying along with the little helper ships/mechs. This game is just too cool, nothing like it.
@@Twitty00700 It's quite possible. I play Saturn games on my Galaxy S10e and they run even better than they do on original hardware. The problem right now is the price; a Galaxy S10e is $550 unlocked. I'm not sure how much that is when you strip it down to the bare essentials needed for a mini console, but it's probably still too much. Of course, I haven't tested Yaba Sanshiro on older Galaxy phones, so maybe it can run just as well on weaker hardware. All I know is that it runs Castlevania SOTN as smoothly as the original PlayStation version of the game, and fixes the graphics using OpenGL filters. Blazing Rangers and Panzer Dragoon Saga also run smoother and look better on the Galaxy S10e - they almost look like early Dreamcast games! I hope that some day we'll get a Saturn Mini, and when we do it will run like Yaba Sanshiro does on my phone and enhance the gameplay experience, unlike the PlayStation Classic/Mini/whatever did when it gimped the PAL versions of PlayStation classics. Since Sega doesn't have any modern console to support, this is an opportunity for them to pay the Saturn the kind of respect it deserves and introduce new generations of gamers to their post-Genesis catalog of games.
Technosoft never disappoints in the music dept. I agree the tracks are awesome in this one. I never got to play this back in the day but finally did a couple years ago on my Saturn and still really enjoy it. Glad I grabbed it before the prices got even more ridiculous. Nice review as always yours are one of the few that I watch and enjoy.
There eventually has to be a Technosoft Collection of sorts made... That would be the most ideal and affordable option to play this game and others from that amazing company officially.
Sega owns the Thunder Force series, but I'm not sure they have the rights to the rest. If that's the case, then someone could put out a Tecno/Techno Soft collection minus the TF series. Which I would love, but how many would go for this?
Great to see some shoot-em-up love! Was just dusting off my Saturn shooter collection. Cotton 2, Battle Garegga, Soukyugurentai, Sexy Parodius, etc. Sooo many good ones on the Saturn. May just have to add Hyper Duel to the collection. "I've always wanted a thing called tuna sashimi..."
I think you summed it up well saying it sits ahead of 16bit but behind 32bit. It is a fun title though and yes, the music is outstanding. Fantastic video buddy.
Well this game could,ve run on a sega genesis or in combination with the sega CD for the extra background layer, to me, it sadly lacks the wow factor unless it was 3D like starfox albeit with textured polygons,
Technosoft was one of the biggest joys of owning a Genesis, but I lost track of them after Thunder Force V. I thought they went out of business shortly after that and had no idea they made this. Now I want it.
Woooow. Amazing. I've never heard about this game before. I'll try It. I love Technosoft Games. Just finished Thunder Force III on Mega Drive. You sure have quite an excellent taste for games Mr. Lord X. Thank you!
This is one of the most amazing products from Technosoft. This was the most expensive purchase I ever made on a game and feel zero buyers remorse. This game is amazing, like this channel.
Superb upload SLX. So nice to see an old classic like this one, getting some attention outside hardcore Saturn fan groups. It's on my Top 5 of Saturn shooters, together with Shienryu, Radiant Silvergun, Strikers Part 1 & 2. (I'd love to see more uploads focusing on shooters) Keep it up SLX. ^^
Great video! This had been on my wish list for over a decade when I finally took the plunge and bought a copy in Akihabara a couple years ago. Spending that kind of money was painful... but as you said, if you’re going to throw down fat wads of cash on a Saturn title anyway, Hyper Duel is one (of the few, I think) worthy of consideration. Just wish I’d saved my money and held off on Blast Wind...
Got it some years ago. Imma big Thunder Force fan so I had to own this one too. It plays differently and there's non stop action, if you like arcade shooters is a must play. if you adjust the sound mode to Mono instead of Stereo the music will have more volume than the sound effects.
@@triplestar100 Tsukumo's the only game composer I know that creates a music suite that spans across different games & genres: _The Justice Ray parts 1-5_ Too bad mainstream gamers barely know him today, he doesn't even have an entry on Wikipedia.
You'll go for a repro even if you don't want to. During the last 3 years many westerners started spreading perfect repros (quality in line with those of NG AEH/AES games) in shops in Japan. How they do that? Since japanese retro shop clerks do not trust westerners that come in with expensive games, westerners fakers are "paying" japanese locals to go into a shop and unload some high value games. This has poisoned the NG market (I'm a long time AEH/AES collector) and is starting to spread to Sat and PCE markets. The fakers leave a % of the profits to the locals who turn in the games and trust me, I've seen many repros back to back with the real copies and you can't possibly tell the difference. They're THAT good. Of course you won't find repros for games that don't have much value, since repros cost a lot to make. However, games like Taromaru, Hyper Duel are getting targeted a lot, since people pay high prices and this makes it worth to repro and sell them. You might be asking , why is this random guy writing all this in a random YT comment section? Because I'm trying to spread the truth wherever I can. You will see that soon someone will be replying to me saying its all bullshit. Those are the fakers. I have an almost complete collection of Sat PCE and NG. So in theory I couldn't care less since I'm not in the "game" anymore. But I hate these fakers, they sometimes sacrifice good games to make repros (NG) or simply poison the market with non original copies (PCE SS). This means that some people may have paid upwards of 1000$ for a non original Taromaru and that makes me mad. People's money is not something that you can play with. I support honest repro makers who mark their repros (for example: subtle differences that don't alter the general aestethic but still give out that it is a repro and not the real thing), if money is an issue please buy those and support the honest repro makers/sellers (except NG, since every repro you buy is a sacrificed game). But please spread the word about this black market which is poisoning the retrogaming marketplace.
I remember seeing a copy of this game at my local import game specialty store nearly 20-something years ago...I never gave this one, radiant silvergun or blast wind a second look then. If only I knew then what I know now. I did manage to track down a copy of RS, but was too late for the other 2. Eventuallt, I broke down and bought repros of the other 2. Both are fun as hell and play pretty well. But I'm kicking myself in the ars for not picking these up and $40 a piece when I had the chance.
Hyper Duel is what I imagined Thunder Force V would be like after the 4th came out and we were hearing about the future 32-bit consoles. It could have been a nice 32X/CD 32X title at the forefront of the 5th gen as well.
I've always loved Hyper Duel ever since I picked it up. I was already an established fan of Technosoft, and their soundtracks, so it goes without saying that this one blew my mind. I loved the music so much that I went on eBay and bought the OST CD (same for Blast Wind). This was back in 2006/2007. I paid $95 for the game, and I thought that was a lot back then! Lol. I don't agree with its current ridiculous price tag of $400+, and I still don't understand why its become that expe over the years. But I love this game. Another awesome vid, my friend! 😎👍
I was able to try this game out a few years ago and while I'll never be able to afford a real copy, it is a blast. While the sprites look a bit reminiscent of the previous gen, there is so much going on at once that there is no way a 4th gen machine could handle it. You're right about the music, too. One thing I want to remark on is this game's ability to get its story across pretty much just using in-game action and sprite animation instead of text or cut scenes. It kind of reminds me of Sonic 3&K in that way.
This game is a must-own if you like shooters. Fast, giant sprites. Amazing level design and gameplay. This is a top-ten shooter on Saturn for sure. Also, yes the music is amazing.
1996 was a very expensive gaming year for me. So many awesome Saturn and Playstation games were released that year. On top of that, the N64 was debuted and though there weren’t very many games for it that year, they sure were expensive. Between Japanese imports and US releases, it’s wonder I could afford college, clothes, rent, gas, insurance food, door fees, alcohol and weed. In December of that year, I was interested in purchasing Batsugun, but the store owner wanted $85 for it. I tried everything to get him to lower the price. I even tried the old “I’ve spent thousands of dollars here, man. Cmon”. He finally cracked and said, “Ok, I’ll sell you 3 games for $150. No tax!” He caught me off guard. I was trying to only spend $60 and now this fucker presented a deal I couldn’t pass up. After about 10 seconds of thinking about the deal(and how long I was gonna be eating top ramen), I said deal. After looking at what he had and thinking about what I already owned I decided to go with Batsugun, Baku Baku and Shadow of the Empire. He then yelled, “Hell no! No N64 games”(He was selling it for $79.99 at the time). I said fine, I’ll take Hyper Duel instead. After he quickly did some math in his head, he looked at me and said, “Fine, and don’t ever say I don’t hook you up.” After a bit of buyer’s remorse, I began to appreciate what I got for the money. Batsugun was great, Baku Baku was an awesome game to put on when chicks were over and after some time with Hyper Duel, I was glad I picked it. It’s a solid game and I got it for a pretty good deal. It also got a good amount of play from my roommate and our friends. Miss those simple days. Good times
Nice! That year of 1996-1997 is probably still my favorite year or year-and-a-half for new games. jfc man, you walked home from the game store with new copies of Hyper Duel, Batsugun, and Baku Baku in a bag ... can that possibly be beat?
This is definitely one of the games I'm really looking forward to getting into once I start collecting Saturn repros. There's this crazy part of me that would have loved to see what the Genesis could have done with this gem, after beating TFIV a bunch, it makes me maybe too optimistic lol.
I won't forget that moment when I managed to pull off my first 1CC in AC Hyper Duel with P. Smasher. No joke, I nearly had a heart attack due to my nervous of actually making it to the end with only 1 credit.
Great game, definitely carrying that Thunderforce vibe(audio visually). I'm glad that I completed my Saturn full set in the early 2000s. I remember when import stores offered it at around $100-120, but the prices are far beyond reasonable now. Long gone "good times" when nobody knew about these gems.
Freaking love Hyper Duel, one of my favorite STG's on the mighty Saturn. Not quite up there with Battle Garegga, Batsugun and the like - but pretty damn awesome anyway.
I just recently played this for the first time x, couldnt believe i never knew about this. Honestly has become a personal favorite of mine, i love the gameplay, graphics, and especially the music. But then again i love anything from technosoft
I've really got to say that I'm quite surprised that you haven't done a video on the PolyMega console, as much as you love Sega (as do I) as well as Turbografx and PS1 thrown in for good measure.
Tbh these type of games were designed to be run on the 32 bit arcade class hardware (such as what was on the Saturn), but of course took time to become affordable enough to have in the home. However by then consumers wanted polygons...
These "fighter jet/space ships shoot'em ups" games always looked awesome.... The amount of different weaponry, equipment & attacks were "WOW".... I never played any long tho, the gameplay was way to fast & my young mind couldn't process all the pure CHAOS on the TV quickly enough.... Lol....
I have this game myself and to me it's worth it. Game is hard as nails and a lot of fun. They really need technosoft to give us a awesome collection of these shooters or better yet, remake these classics for todays systems. Not everyone has the ability to fork up 400 bucks for these kind of gems. But if you like this game you'll love devil engine for the switch. It pays homage to games like hyper duel and thunder force series. Hopefully there will be a physical one day.
Another game that should have been part of SEGA Ages, I feel in a few years SEGA will pay the price for ignoring their huge back log of classic games, you get to a point when nobody cares, because too much time has passed, kind of like Atari stuff and even NES stuff aint hot like it was.
This game would have fared a lot better if it was released as part of a classics shooter collection at the time. While the arcade original came out 3 years prior to the saturn release, Hyper Duel is essentially an 80s arcade game through and through. If it was part of a 3-in-1 collection with ports of the same quality? Would have been a best seller.
Sega Lord X, It's me Scoutimus Prime and I here to asked some Questions for you. Will ever Sega Mega Drive Mini 3 happen and Will ever seen a Hyper Duel, Blast Wind, Nekketsu Oyako and Kyuutenkai in Sega Mega Drive Mini 3?
I had myself a Hi-Saturn sometime in the early 2000s. Maybe I should finish watching the video before saying how much I paid for my Hyper Duel. Well, I paid 180$ through ebay. Got a lot of it back when it came time to part ways. Hoo... I dropped some money on my Saturn. Good times. Edit: OMG.
Never understand how this can come out in Saturn in 1996 but cost more than double of what Radiant Silvergun goes for and that came out on Saturn in 1998!
I wish more games like this were made today. The micro transaction and DLC laden garbage of today doesn't even compare in my opinion, but I'm sure most would disagree.
For that price you can the console and and and ODE if you care about playing the game or if you don't care about the authentic experience then you can emulate it. But yeah the price is not justified I have always made it a rule to pay less than retail for old games and quite often I have been able to pick up games dirt cheap
Love this game however I can't say the current market price is worth it. I bought my copy years back for around 200 CAD and sold that copy for over 600 CAD. I have a modded saturn so I have a way to play it on original hardware still. Also this is easy to play on mame as well. Awesome shooter for sure but don't pay hundreds of $ for it imo..
Ugh. One of the worst things I ever did as a collector was sell off my Saturn game collection when I was going through a rough time in my life to a guy that I thought would take care of these games. He ended up letting his young nephews play with and abuse the games. At some point I bought some of the games back in worse condition and his nephews lost the disc for Hyper Duel. I ended up getting another on eBay but it irks me that there's one less copy out there when the game is quite rare and collectible because I was hasty in selling it.
9:05 I’ve met a Sasquatch, they don’t like being called that other name you used, they’re self conscious about the size of their feet. But I’ve never seen an arcade cabinet for Hyper Duel. Not in the wild, no in personal collection, nada. Anywhere.
This games looks so rad and awesome, but my god is it pricey. Paul Newman would have to break my legs in a pool hall if I'm gonna fork over the money for that though. So tempted, but I value my shins...
