It was 1994 and Street Fighter II was still huge. Seemingly out of the blue, the 3DO received a port of Super Street Fighter II Turbo a mere 8 months after its arcade debut. And it was glorious...

Episode Notes:
1. 3DO version captured via S-Video from a 240p Japanese system. Arcade from MAME.
2. This was called Super Street Fighter II X Grand Master Challenge in Japan.
3. The 3DO does indeed have an official arcade stick. The FZ-JS1.
4. I wanted to show a battle with Akuma but didn't want to spoil his entrance since its hidden and dependent on your performance.
5. This game is on everything. There have also been multiple remixes, releases and remakes.
6. Load times in the 3DO version are quite tolerable. The game will hitch every so often when loading data but it isn't anything that will cause you grief.
7. I really tried to keep the special moves popping in the gameplay capture to show you just how well they come off with the proper controller.

The 3DO was priced so obscenely it was a complete joke to me. Between it's insane price, and Nintendo and Sega being the only "real" game companies around, I knew it was going to fail. I bought a Genesis when Super Street Fighter II came out for it, JUST to play that single game. Is it the best SFII game? Of course not. But for the price I was very happy with it(and that game wasn't cheap either, since it was on a double-sized cartridge).

It was a really cool system at the time. Got mine as a Christmas present when they still sold at the original MSRP and have that original system still working underneath my TV today. :) Star Control II (my late stepfather’s favorite game of all time), Need For Speed and several other games offered things in the 3DO versions that weren’t available on other platforms. I got so much mileage out of it that I didn’t move to a newer system until Christmas 1997 (PS1). Lots of great gaming memories from those years.

This was ones of the games I rented with a 3DO back in days. While most aspects of it were very impressive, I found the lack of parallax scrolling to be inexplicable and inexcusable. I mean, here's a $700 console in 1994 and it can't do something that's a staple of 16-bit gaming and my Genesis (and SNES) can do with ease!

Back then, every console had good and unique titles. Even the Jaguar had Tempest 2000 and AVP. The Virtual Boy was a very unique experience across the board. The CD-I had Pebble Beach Golf. Personally, the 3DO was my system of choice for a few years, until Saturn and PS1 came out in US.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu
@JohnDoe-wq5eu 3 года назад
@@Not-Great-at-Gaming The biggest problem with the 3DO is you really have to look at it historically. You have to see where it fits in that little niche between the 16-bit era and the early 32-bit era. The problem was after the Saturn and definitely after the PlayStation were launched it faded so fast into obscurity it wasn't even funny. I owned one after I owned a PlayStation and going back was incredibly painful. It's remarkable how archaic it felt just a few years after the PlayStation launched. I'm pretty sure I still have it sitting in my garage somewhere yet it might have been one of the few consoles I actually gave away because of the time I just couldn't find any games for it and just didn't care.

@lmcgregoruk
@lmcgregoruk 3 года назад
@@lazarushernandez5827 The 3DO and Neo-Geo were no doubt good systems, the killing blow for both, was the insanely huge price tags they cost at the time. Probably the same reason that in the UK, 9 out of 10 kids would have had a ZX Spectrum rather than a Commodore 64, I don't think doubted that the C64 had the superior hardware, but when you could get a Spectrum for a fraction of the cost, and still have fun with mostly the same games, that's what's going to happen. Plus since parents were the ones paying for it, they're more likely to get something cheaper for their kid. It did have the advantage of because most people had the same system, swapping/borrowing/copying tapes gave you more choice of games to play.

Another definitive port on the 3DO is Star Wars: Rebel Assault. The FMV assets look so damned clean compared to even the PC original, and it controls so damned good! Interesting to see people talking about the price. I think a lot of people forget that the video game systems from Nintendo and Sega (and later Sony) had manufacturing controlled by the company and were sold at a loss with that offset by higher royalties on the games. By contrast, 3DO itself didn’t manufacture the hardware, rather that was licensed to manufacturers to make various models (Panasonic, Goldstar, Creative Labs, etc.) and were originally not intended to sell at that sort of a loss - and the licensing fees were much lower, In other words, it’s not that the 3DO was price-gouging, it’s that market price expectations were artificially low due to years of being accustomed to systems selling at a big loss and the unsustainably of that in a model with lower royalties.

When I first played this version a decade ago it struck me as arcade perfect and it still impresses me even if it isn't. It makes the Snes and especially Megadrive ports of SSF2 look passable at best.

Great point about pointing out the differences. Back then, we didn't have the tools to assess how different each port was from the arcade. We were more appreciative of what we had and felt we got our money's worth.

I do miss the days of playing games in the arcade that just weren't realistically possible on home consoles without noticeable concessions (unless you/your parents were loaded and could afford a Neo-Geo and games/X68000 computer etc.) - wandering arcades as a kid and seeing all the huge, colorful sprites flying around with minimal slowdown. I wish arcades (or maybe VR arcades) made a comeback with insane system boards with 3/4 GTX 3090's, maxed out i9's, 64+GB of RAM etc. producing games that wouldn't be possible at home.

@@johnjaleco5683 Yes, the 3DO had enough buttons on the pad to use, but the face buttons weren't laid out very well for a fighting game, it had 3 main buttons, ABC, L+R shoulder buttons, and a Play/Pause(AKA P) and Stop(AKA X) button, which is where select and start would be these days. Still better than a standard Megadrive controller for fighting games though.

@Sega Lord X Great video as usual! I just wanted to make one small distinction since as a game music composer/arranger myself I want to make sure the new music got full credit. :) Most of the soundtrack comes from the FM Towns version but there are a few tracks that are different between the two. Going from memory, the FM Towns version had a different intro song (the SSFII one) and no Akuma theme, so both of those arrangements first appeared on the 3DO. I’m not sure if there were any other differences but I love that intro music as much as you do, so I wanted to highlight that the arrangement appeared on 3DO first. :)

@lvl99ultrathug 3 года назад
I’ve only seen the FM Towns port via a few videos that I’ve watched, but I remember noticing that the music didn’t continue playing between rounds and that it was missing the KO versions of the music (aka the “heavy damage” themes). Then again I’m not sure if the game was being played on real hardware

I liked street fighter 2 when I was a kid but when I first got to play ssf2t on the 3do I became obsessed with it. The soundtrack was absolutely the killer. Too bad about the p button placement. I never found an adapter that allowed me to play arcade sticks on it. I missed out with the snes adapter. They do have the soundtrack on the 15 anniversary sf collection on ps2 and ogxbox.
