Hey Y'all......The skilled driver in this video, Wayne Gerdes, is a long time friend of mine. He is the #1 fuel economy driver in the U.S. There is a very large, extensive envelope of techniques Wayne teaches and uses.....not just driving slow. It takes quite a bit of time to learn these things, and to make them your habit. Wayne is an extremely safe and alert driver. Often these press and media people try to sensationalize and exaggerate, making it look extreme or unsafe. But actually a well trained, experienced hypermiler is a smart, alert, safe and efficient driver.

I experimented with hypermiling and my conclusions came out mixed. it has dimension returns the more mpg you get. So from 20 to 30 mpg is a lot bigger than from 40 to 50. I also find that getting the best mpg numbers don't always mean saving the most gas. Sometimes there are shorter paths that have more stop and go but saves more than the longer path that has less stops. I also find being aggressive in certain key areas to skip long lines or go around them can help. I think to a normal person the best tips (which they said in the video) are keeping tires inflated, remove extreme stuff from the insides and outside of your car, and try and use your brakes less, don't go so fast that you need them all the time and coast as much as you can.

On my case i was getting 26mpg on a NA 2L engine. Drive at 40 mph. Once just to gwt fun i decide to reach 60mph or a little above. I arrive home with 31 MPG. That day i discover brake specific fuel consuption is the real enemy and not the fuel economy. Turns out that i did this for two weeks and i discover that at some point when i took my feet from the throttle at 60 mph the car wouldn't slow down faster (Or literally wouldn't slow down unless I press the brakes) on 5th gear. Or the uphill was to high (But even with this inwould get slow down back to 40 which is the speed allowed for that area) My long range fuel consumption pass from 22.5 up to 29. Since then I don't drive slower unless there's a lot of traffic.
@circletech7745
@circletech7745 9 дней назад
I would argue that it's not safe to drive like this. Driving slower and at a lower speed is counter to most drivers so this will substantially increase your risk of an accident. It's better to drive the speed limit like a normal person but follow the rest of the tips here.

The two most efficient methods I have found are a light foot on the throttle and stop anticipation (aka driving with load, coasting as much as possible) and just plain studying one's driving habits... An actual fuel mileage gauge helps a ton.

I normally drive about 72 mph, but lately have been allowing more time to get where I'm going, and driving 60 instead. Meanwhile, keeping the optimum tire pressure is difficult these days. Many gas stations offer no air, or their pumps are broken. The ones that have it make you pay for it, and the pump always seems to shut down after just 2 or 3 tires. Isn't it supposed to be mandatory that gas stations offer FREE air and water to their customers?
@iswimslow4
@iswimslow4 2 года назад
never heard of free water and air. here in south florida they make you change money into quarters (which gas stations might not have or want to exchange) to use the air pump

@@youtuberogu9935as is reflected in gas cost to the consumer no doubt. It's incredibly rare a law from Crazyfornia makes any sense for the consumer. Even if that consumer is a former homeless person trying to dig out of a hole and can't because inflation......bunch a hwhite people trying to feel better about their miserable upper middle class lives by being patronizing to those less fourtunate than you, ironically the same ones you are trying to feel better about saving. What a f'n joke. Can't get one exit down the highway without being over ran by a 10" lifted truck with a Green New Deal trillion dollar fund project supporter wife in tow, probably pretending to be a wife to someone that needs therapy and codependent Greenie can't get by without disfunction herself.

Its very hard to draft a 18 wheeler unless they know your there. The torque advantage the truck has causes a lot of surging that is hard to match to stay in draft and negates the benefit. Drafting is always a dangerous place only to be undertaken under most ideal conditions. I've gotten 50 mpg in a Honda Fit one time going to LA to Las Vegas using every trick in the book. Light traffic helped, drafting a bit, tailwind, 65 mph max speed, variable speed climbing from 45-55 mph, single occupant, no a/c, turtle acceleration and resulted in 30+ min of additional time. Normally I get 36 mpg going 65-70 mph but, recently been hypermiling again and getting 37.5 with 50/50 city/highway. When you do the math, speed has little effect on duration of trips. Before I started hypermiling would get 29-31.5 in the city now I can get beyond the highway MPG in the city. I can't hypermile with people in the car, they will think i'm crazy but, a rule of thumb is 5-10 mph under the speed limit tends to be optimal for MPG.

why big trucks overtake you, you know things are bad.
@jpscharged
@jpscharged Год назад
Big trucks over take you because of amazon prime 2-day delivery entitling everyone to zero patients culture ultimately resulting in the decline of human existence. As a friend of a trucker I can say truckers don't care about mpg at all. It's about time and distance for package. The premium for time far outweighs fuel costs for truckers. That requires patience on the consumer. The consumer is killing themselves and the only vent they have unfortunately is road rage. Hard ask for patience from that crowd understandably.

My 07 MDX is rate 19 city/21 hwy. I’ve been averaging 25mpg combined and have gotten up to 30.1 mpg on a 27 mile drive from Williams to Flagstaff with the wind behind me. On the highway slowly go up hills. Follow a semi like 200 ft away so the cars behind you know they’re gonna have to get over anyway. Do about 60-65 miles and hour. The secret is to NOT use cruise control. It will down shift when it needs to causing a lot of wasted gas to save mere minutes on a 2hr drive. Then when going down hill pump it up to 70-75miles and hour and for a really steep hill throw it in neutral.
