I'd have to say my top political fantasy I've read is the Green Bone Saga and The Farseer Trilogy. Both series really out me through it

Oh heck yes, a video perfect for me! Thank you! The Goblin Emperor is so good! It's VERY complicated, but like you said, Maia roots the whole thing nicely. It's kind of perfect because he knows nothing of the political scene, just like we don't, so we're as baffled as he is. Gotta mention the Queen's Thief series here. I know you've read it, but for others reading the comments! Yes, it's young adult, but it's got a lot of complex political machinations of its own, and every book builds upon the others, and every reread reveals more incredible details that you never noticed before! The way the tiny details all contribute to the narrative and the way that you don't NOTICE how important details are until the big reveal is just so good. Highly recommended!

Great recommendations! I need to continue with the Daevabad trilogy! Just read City of Brass but absolutely loved it! For political fantasies I’d recommend The Justice of Kings (adult fantasy) as well as The Aurelian Cycle (YA). I think you’ll love both!!

Justice of Kings was good. Very unique writing style, like reading a really interesting legal brief (more exciting than that sounds).. I would have enjoyed the Aurelian cycle much more if it wasn't for Ixion though, he was such an obvious bad guy, I couldn't get into Furysong. Finish Daevabad though, its the best of the books you've mentioned.

I read Evans' work set in Forgotten Realms, so when she wrote a story set in an original world, I had to read it. I read it when it was first released, and I loved it. Tales of the Otori by Lian Hearn is a Japanese political fantasy that I really enjoyed it.

Some of my favourites: Age of Five trilogy by Trudi Canavan Empire trilogy by Raymond E Feist and Janny Wurts So far all of the books I have read of Janny Wurts has a political component to varying degrees, but also a whole lot more. If you're interested in an excellent political SF, I'd recommend Cyteen by CJ Cherryh. Plots, assassination, cloning, and a great study on the nature vs nurture debate.

I saw another BookTube video on the same topic recently and I'll ask the same question here that I did there: Is there a reason that George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series never seems to end up on lists like this? I just became aware of "BookTube" and started learning more about the fantasy genre in the last couple of years, so my hypothesis is that the whole "Game of Thrones" thing was an obsession that got played out and moved on from before I came along, but as influential and beloved as I thought it was with a lot of readers, it surprises me how little I see it referenced. Especially since when you (Regan) talk about some of these you reference Tyrion, but don't include that story as a prime example of the sub-genre. This is not a criticism, just a curiosity. 😊

i think the fact that the likelihood of us getting TWOW are slim, and of getting ADOS are probably zero, means a lot of people just don’t think of it anymore. for me, if i were to recommend a series in the same vein, i wouldn’t pick ASOIAF for the above reason!
@everythingamazing3807
@everythingamazing3807 Год назад
I also think booktubers hope to bring less heard of books to audiences and by recommending books like GOT it doesn’t add a ton to avid readers since it’s likely they’ve read or already heard of it
@IsabelleGervais-tc3pn
@IsabelleGervais-tc3pn Год назад
It’s a fair question, one that I’ve also asked myself in the past. If I remember correctly, she’s only read the first book (or first two) and that was long after she started watching the show. Bear in mind that a lot of _casual_ viewers of the HBO adaptation like Regan haven’t actually read the series. I noticed that many people who’ve attempted to read ASOIAF afterwards, have struggled to get into the story, for reasons that I personally cannot comprehend as a diehard fan of the books lol (but then again I read the majority of them before I watched the show and was thus not spoiled as heavily, so maybe that contributed to my appreciation of it). Don’t worry though, there are plenty of ASOIAF-loving folks on the internet; in fact most of the fantasy authors that Regan constantly praises in her videos, are self-declared massive fans of GRRM themselves and were heavily influenced by his work (and Tolkien's) so it’s always funny to me when it appears to be snubbed by mainstream fantasy-oriented BookTubers. Watch them all jump on the bandwagon when The Winds of Winter finally comes out and pretend they’ve all been waiting for it just to get those clicks and views on their reading vlogs 😂 (annnd now I’ll probably get blocked lmao)
@Jodi9810
@Jodi9810 Год назад
@@IsabelleGervais-tc3pn Makes sense. Personally, before I read much fantasy or saw any BookTubers review fantasy I read much of GRRM's series, but I think I lost steam and put it down about half-way through the 4th or 5th book. I thought it was pretty great (and very political!) until I petered out though. I was also trying to read before watching the show (I didn't watch when it first came out) and when the two diverged and I finished watching the series I just wasn't motivated to keep reading.
@IsabelleGervais-tc3pn
@IsabelleGervais-tc3pn Год назад
@@Jodi9810 I agree, ASOIAF is definitely one of the most political fantasy series out there, it’s almost like it became the standard in the genre since the 90s. Sanderson, Hobb, Ruthfuss, Lawrence and a legion of other acclaimed fantasy writers are always all praise about GRRM. Same with the popular YA fantasy authors out there; 99.9% of them have mentioned ASOIAF at some point in their career, you can find multiple articles and interviews attesting that on the internet (Bardugo, Maas…). Anyway, I completely understand how the last few seasons of the show (especially the finale) might have drifted you away from the franchise altogether, they were a disgrace. I can only hope that you still pick up the series where you left off because the books are something else entirely, truly a masterpiece from book 1 to 5, and I’m confident we’ll get at least one more book in the future. Fire & Blood is also really good, although it reads more like a historical account than a fictional story. The lore, the characterization, the politics… it’s all so brilliant in there too, and really expands the knowledge we have of the series. The HBO adaptation is surprisingly well done too, I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes in S2.
