At some point during the Hegemony, the bizarre structures known as the Time Tombs appeared on the distant world of Hyperion. It was thought that the large objects had been constructed at some point in the distant future and had been sent backward through time just as the creature known as the Shrike had been. There were six structures in total. The Obelisk, The Sphinx, The Shrike Palace, The Cave Tombs, The Jade Tomb, and the Crystal Monolith.

You're one of the only vloggers I've ever seen do Hyperion. Back in the '90's someone left a beautiful hard cover 'Endymion' at my work so I took it home to read. I was instantly taken in to that universe and proceeded to read everything by or about Dan Simmons I could find; which wasn't as much back then. I of course had all my own visions of the Time Tombs, Labyrinths, Father Hoyt, Shrike Tree, etc. Not that your commentary and excellent production quality ruin any of that- it is in fact awesome to see all the visual interpretations artists have assigned to these many concepts. THANKS AND GREAT WORK!

Bran the Broker same; excellent narration, kept me immersed throughout. Didn’t think it could be bettered but Peter Kenny does a fantastic job with Iain M Banks’ Culture Series and Scott Brick was also brilliant narrating Dune. Audiobooks narrators are unsung heroes who can make or break a good read/listen.

This novel is one of the best in Science Fiction, but to me, Ilium and Olympus is the best of all time. I can't understand why they don't make a TV series. It can provide several long seasons without writing improvised crap. They have got all the amazing material just right there.

Since time travel was involved I thought that the Labyrinths were created by the AI as well. The Fall of Hyperion hints that the AI intends humans to seek shelter in such labyrinths while the AI Technocore unleashes their ultimate weapon to defend the Hegemony against an invasion fleet of 'Ousters'. The same book hints that the labyrinths, at least in one possible timeline became the graves of millions of humans and the invasion was nothing but an elaborate trick of the Technocore AI. Not only to destroy the humans who had outlived their usefulness but have them jump into this mousetrap at their own volition.

I feel like the more I learn about the Hyperion Cantos the less I understand what the damn story is actually about. So far all I gather is that there's a mysterious evil murder robot from the future, some huge mysterious labyrinths from the future, a bunch of mysterious monuments from the future, and the purpose of all these things are a mystery. From the future. And that's all well and good, but what is the actual _plot_ here?
@infini1970
@infini1970 3 года назад
I just finished book one and two. SPOILERS!!! I think it's pretty clear that the labyrinths were to be used for the humans seeking shelter from the death wand and the Shrike was acting in accordance to a plan. The priest Hoyt? went through a portal and ended up in one of the labyrinths but it was infused with people. Dead I think. Also with the cruciforums. He sees the Shrike, it pretty much lets him see it as what could be or what already happened in the future and then there's the plan to use the death wand on the Ousters and hiding people in the laberynths. Yet also it was a trap.... Should I go on? Just thought maybe that would clarify some things. I could be wrong but it's what I remember and how I saw it when I read it.
