Timeline correction. Ye Wenjie's first signal is trasmitted in 1971, but the response from Trisolaris is not heard until 1979, that same year Ye Wenjie responds. Thanks everyone that pointed out that FTL drives aren't technically a thing in the series. It would be more accurate to refer to their drives as curvature propulsion engines.
Totally got that FTL = Curvature propulsion. And really, Curvature propulsion results in FTL travel so you're not at all wrong either. Kind of like calling an iPhone a phone.
It serves the same purposes. That's literally what is used in Stat Trek. The warp field bends space and it's the space around the ship, not the ship itself, that travels faster than light. Technically, the Enterprise isn't actually moving when through space when it hit the warp drive.
You’re a life changer Quinn. I’m not being hyperbolic, you literally changed my life. Your videos is what really pushed me into start reading fiction regularly, thus opening up so many wonderful worlds and ideas for me. Some of the books I’ve read have made a lasting impact. I’m an avid reader now, which has bettered my overall concentration, discipline and confidence. Bless you Quinn! You’re doing great work!
@cedricsankara9809 may I recommend Iain Banks ‘The Culture’ series of books. I would argue they are more iconic and definitively not as dark as this series which was rather abrasive to the psyche.
I got a half truths fictional book no one cares about but is probably the most important book out there “The Celestine prophecy” Goes into rainbow body, monks, Chinese military suppressing monks and working deltec trying to harness energy from the 4th dimension. Talks about us evolving to 4th dimensional beings.
Every time I think about this series I catch myself thinking "Where did Liu get the knowledge in so many fields to create such a totally fleshed out and realistic story about future of humanity?"
@@Tiag_90 Quinn has been making 3 body problem videos for a couple of years minimum. look at his channel. the views on those videos amount to millions. his videos certainly popularized the series, and there's no hyperbole in that
@@jefferyfrierson3434 they will probably screw it up because that's what happens when you try to turn a book into a movie some souls are incapable of writing master pieces.
Im sure he will be doing stuff when the Netflix show comes out. but hes already done so much I wonder how much more there is to do. After I finished the books and looked on youtube for discussion of them, his channel was top of the list.
Nothing wrong with going over and analysing the content, much like GoT wasn’t accurate to the entirety of the storyline, it would be refreshing to see the GoT show creators get it right this time to the original plot line and Quinn can hold them accountable for a start 👍
I served 3 years managing a section supporting the MM III missile fields in North Dakota. The power and purpose of what we were a part of was driven home every day in many ways. I have not seen a better or more creative explanation of that power, purpose, and for the possible consequences for failure than how it was depicted in this science fiction story, Remembrance of Earth’s Past. Deterrence through mutually assured destruction is an almost irrevocable compact and once instituted cannot be revoked without catastrophic consequences of one form or another.
what i find interesting is the themes of collectivism vs individualism. as the first book starts during communist china and the clashing ideoogies of the cold war, that's an underlying aspect. how humans function as a collective vs actions taken by individuals. humanity was doomed by a single individual, then saved by a single individual (the wallfacer), then undone by the collective. cooperation is necessarity to fight back but also hinders salvation of only a partial group. it takes this social study and applies it to the wider universe. the dark forest hypothesis works for a collective, but there will be individuals who break out of that mold and with their single action shape the future
Humans are bred to follow leaders. Groomed from birth socially. Especially males. We love our heroes essentially. Chaos is the problem. A Technical Anarchy is the solution. It requires most humans to be smart enough to insist on a decent AI to rule the Earth. Humans aren't capable. We're too parochial and tribal. In our DNA to fight over stuff. Inevitable. Should hurry it along.
On the note of collectivism vs individualism. Its also important to point out how this was portrayed in the Trisolaran civilization. Their entire world was working as a single collective. But that too was not the way, as told by Listener 1379 who said that they worked like drones and had nothing to look forward to, no art, no love, no nothing. Just one goal of advancement to ensure survival. The Listener 1379 was also single handedly responsible for trying to save the entireity of the human race before Ye Wenjie decides to go against his actions and doom the human race.
it is funny that humans still a dick in the future, the bronze age and blue space could be the last humans. Lucky for earth, luo ji started the deterrence and earth survived. They asked both ships to come back home to be welcomed as heroes, then they reversed the decision and imprisoned the crew of Bronze age.
I had heard of the Three Body Problem series and was trying to find summaries on it, and this channel is what pushed me to finally buying and reading all three books. Just finished Death’s End a couple days ago and idk what to do with myself. Like I’m laying here staring at my ceiling, wondering how I’ll find another book or series with such a beautifully insane sci-fi theme🧍🏻 I just wanna share how much I appreciate this channel though, and I’ll probably read things recommended by Quinn :3 He also has a very soothing voice. This channel deserves more love ❤❤❤❤
I enjoyed Project Hail Mary after the 3body trilogy, the tone is a bit less serious almost comical, but the plot is great plus I liked the ending better than Death’s end
After Death's End, you still have another one to read from the series. It's the Redemption of Time, was written by Baoshu by has been approved by Cixin Liu and it's a good read that continues/expands the story of the Three Body Problem series. :)
@@maz7817 I’ve been so wary of it because a lot of people seemed to not like it? I haven’t been sure of whether I’d like it or not but I probably do need to at least give it a try.
I stumbled across this channel about a year ago while consuming Dune content. Watched your series on the cixin liu books and was immediately interested. As of right now I’m on the final 10-12 pages of Deaths End and I can’t thank you enough for bringing this book into my periphery. I can’t wait for the Netflix adaptation and ive been promoting this series to any and everyone that will listen lol. Going to come back and watch this video after I finish these final pages… unless a dimension strike hits first 😅
Your videos made me buy and read the whole trilogy, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for that and please don't stop bringing more SciFi creations to us!
You’re the reason I’m now addicted to the Remembrance of Earths Past series…thank you Quinn 🙏🏾 Been a Dune Dude for a while but when I watched your video on The Teardrop incident from The Dark Forest, it not only inspired me to read the series, but also finish up my own Scifi short novel. It’s regarding the future of humanity now ina. Dystopian state due to the extreme and unpredictable expansion of Nanotechnology. Wish I could talk about it more on a podcast with you, maybe one day! Anyways, thank you so much for bringing more of this series in a digestible format to the public as well as just making cool shit in general 😊
I finished the the series on peacock and really enjoyed it even tho i had to read subtitles the whole time but felt like it made me more focused and immersed. Thank you for opening my eyes to this piece of work
@spencers4121 I hope they don't netflix it up tho. I really enjoyed the female characters. They were done very well. Even the 10 assistants. One question I do have which may have been answered easily is. Was the game made for humans to try to find a solution or just to prove there is no solution
Just realised ive been subscribed to you for like 5 years. What an awesome channel. Your passion for fiction is inspiring Quinn! Loved the ASOIAF content, i was way more into that than scifi.. yet the last few years of your channel have really opened my eyes to how much great scifi is out there, this series in particular Endless thanks! Its about time i gave you some money on Patreon❤
A small error, at the beginning of the Galaxy Era section it is stated that an FTL ship is used. This is not the case, the curvature propulsion drive is still bound to be slower than light, the time dilation that caused the ~400 year journey to be compressed to days ship-time occurred due to special relativity and traveling extremely close to, but not exceeding, the speed of light.
I still have 200 pages remaining in the last part so stopped watching when you reached Broadcast era 8 at 5:55, Still at the part where Cheng Xin and AA have almost deciphered Tianmings tales! This is already my fav book series!! Absolutely loving it! Never been so excited for a book.
Hey man, one of your other videos introduced me to the three body problem around a year ago. Having just finished the series, I just want to say thank you. That series was one of the best Sci-fi reads I ever had, a real mind expanding trilogy.
@@thatoneguychad420 lol yeah 😅 Some speakers only begin to sound sober at >1.5x While other content is a gamble as far as possibly not being worth the time. It’s also cognitive training. So normal speed is good for fast speakers and tried and true content creators.
Pacing and context are amazing things. If I through away all my knowledge of the series and listened to this in a vacuum, I get the same strange feeling of disconnect that I often feel in some works that I was so bewildered with to the point I wasn't able to finish. When I enjoy something, end up going out of my way to gain more context to deepen(? or enrich) that enjoyment; it's actually why I love channels like this and supplemental content like this.
I'm always excited to see a new Quinn's Ideas video. Every video is fascinating and shows me an aspect or detail of a book that I didn't catch when I read it. I'd love to see you do some collaboration videos with Media Death Cult. The two of you are my favorite sci-fi channels.
Whooo. 3 body problem. I started the books, my 13yr old was able to borrow the book from school library. He's a sub to your channel too. One of my favorite subjects to learn, talk about before sleep.
now can I get 18 million years in 9 hours? :p Also I can't find much of anything from you on 'The Expanse' series. As they never got to the last books on the TV show, I'd love your take on the entire book series and the aliens and cultural stuff that happens therein. But I don't know if it'd be interesting or unique enough among all the incredible things you cover to warrant your time XD
Awesome, I finished the series last month, always appreciate your videos on the series. I started reading it because of you, incredible and thought provoking stuff. what i find interesting is that the android is called Sophon in the english translation, but in my German translation it’s called Tomoko, imo it makes more sense because she wears a kimono and the dual reading of the chinese characters used for sophon and the japanese name tomoko was already mentioned
Love your content and your way of delivery. Mind uploading a single long combined video of all the breakdowns of this. So we can listen to it like a story as we struggle to fall asleep? Could just be me though.
Thanks Quinn! You are the voice of sci-fi in my heart. I would love to see a breakdown of the story of the gluttonous sea and the new painter and all that. Those stories were my favorite part of the trilogy and show how humanity is so story based! Thanks again and keep it up! We love it!
I finally picked up Three-Body Problem this Christmas, and wow, I am glad I did. Honestly I loved it just as much knowing what would happen, at least to some degree.
One of the scariest things is the Dark Forest Theory and the current "state" of our universe in the Three-Body Problem Trilogy. Contains Spoilers: SPOILERS: Our universe, at its beginning, had 10 dimensions. That's right, 10 dimensions. Considering that the author says that there are civilizations that are much more advanced than ours, some of them can literally control cosmic aspects: they don't use laser beams like in the movies, they use supernovas, gravity itself, neutrinos, antimatter, holes blacks, etc. So, our current 3-dimensional universe would be a corpse/undead of that original universe. In other words, the cosmic natural phenomena (black holes, supernovae, etc.) that astronomy can see, the laws that govern (gravity, energy, etc.) physics and matter are just the remains/effects of the "weapons" used for millions and billions of years ago against alien beings of dimensions greater than ours. These civilizations would be the equivalent of the gods or cosmic entities that create/destroy our myths. So much so that there is a civilization that lives in a two-dimensional universe that destroys our solar system by opening a portal to this 2D universe.
The Dark Forest Theory is the theory that advanced civilizations resist attempting to contact other civilizations because of the risk of being destroyed/colonized by other advanced civilizations. The reason we don’t hear from other civilizations that do attempt to make contact (like human civilization is doing now) is because they’ve already been destroyed by silent and hostile civilizations.
I don't think that last part is right. Singer fired a DVF at our solar system, which only suggests a weapon used by three dimensional entities on other three dimensional entities. I could be wrong of course, but I don't remember anything to indicate that the attack could originate from lower dimensions.
@@deeemess Yeah, it's a dimensional collapse, and that's how the attack works, it reduces an area of space by one dimension, so that whatever is there cannot survive in the lower dimensions. They don't stop either, and more advanced species have to find ways to alter themselves in order to survive in the lower dimensions when it eventually spreads to them, iirc.
Dimension dropping weapons were just an arms race to the eventual destruction and rebirth of the universe. It was fired off knowing that since the cork was out of the bottle(It had been used before and eventually everything would drop down to two dimensions since the effect never stops and continues to spread at lightspeed) you could use it freely against any threat that lacked the ability to survive the trip down a dimension.
@deeemess Singers race was considering moving to a lower dimension because there wepons would eventually flatten the 3rd dimension. They had also already fired other foils.
I really want to thank you for opening my eyes to this kind of science fiction it really opened my eyes. Threw body problem is my favorite book of all time and have started sparrow which is starting off great!
I am reading the first book in the trilogy and enjoying it greatly. I probably shouldn’t be watching your videos because they contain spoilers, but I love your presentation style. I can’t help but watch.😊
I think we’ve already established in the community that Singer launching his Dual Vector Foil happened after the sol-bound dual vector foil flattened the solar system.
7:47: Not really an FTL ship, a curvature propulsion ship which travels very close to the speed of light, but time dilation makes them experience functionally no time when traveling close to the speed of light as a consequence of Special Relativity (and first confirmed with cosmic ray Muon events in 1940). This is demonstrated by the rest of the universe around them aging by hundreds of years as they travel hundreds of light years towards DX3906, and how Guan Yifan mentioned that there was a faction of Galactic Humans who are planning (have already done so?) to build a curvature propulsion drive with the intention of sending it as fast as possible to experience the end of the universe.
Absolutely great videos . I got to know about your channel from another channel “heavy spoilers” while searching for videos on 3 body problem and I must admit I’m completely hooked to your channel now.
I actually ordered all 3 main books and the spin off because of these videos they will be at my house tomorrow night can't wait to dig in thank you Quinn
The eras were fine and all, but giving the earth year equivalent somewhere along with the era years would’ve helped immensely. As is, for my dumb brain I had to keep going back and forth to try to remember how many years had gone by in each, add them up… etc. I kinda had to rewatch parts of the video a handful of times. Just for example you could put “Doomsday Battle : Crisis Era 205 / Earth Year 2215” or something even just roughly so we understand where in the timeline we are. Or even just at the beginning/end of the eras. Still a great video, just a note for the future to make it easier on slow ass viewers like me.. (especially since I like to watch your videos to relax and my brain is usually winding down for the day… lol I’m not trying to do math with my oolong tea and toast. Hahah)
Outstanding! Really well put together and must have taken ages! Thank you. Really excited to see Netflix grapple with some of the things in this series. That droplet attack and the dimensional tombs etc should be astoundingly awe inspiring.
Realizing you're the reason I ever heard of the three body problem, just before leaks and other rumors of the show (I assumed then Netflix paid to pump related three body problem videos as a sort of new fangled ad program... tinhat I know). Still thanks for the intro. Agreed the show was solid as well.
I thought they achieved near lightspeed travel at the end, which is why time dilation happens. How would time dilation even work for faster than light?
This is a fascinating series. I'm extremely impressed that Netflix has started making series on it. They should at least make 8 seasons on it. It will be a global hit
Quinn, I thank the universe everyday for finding your amazing channel! You do tease our imagination and the books that you recommend are all worth reading ❤
