I am doing what I can, to try and earn the money, I want to make sure the house my grandad has rented and raised 3 generations of my family in, stays in the family and gives him a stress free few months to years left, he is in heart failure, house bound and severely disabled, I am his carer basically and do that whilst working a full time job. @@techo2k9 A lot of talk about housing Migrants but where are the young married couples figure in that- you know, the ones that actually were born here- they can't all live with Mum and Dad until the Parents Pass on- two Masters or Mistresses in the same house rarely if ever works- and which kid and spouse do you let live with you.. Migrants are mostly single males- do what every other single male is forced to do- rent a flat with the money you earned or better still GO HOME no social housing.

They are. They’ve simplified the planning to do that and have converted 21000 to homes so far with about 10000 in the pipeline now which will ramp up more going forward. Trouble is they’re all apartments and we don’t need more of them or at least that’s what I see around me. I’m on the outskirts of West London and all they keep building is 1000’s of flats everywhere. London including the residential outskirts has about 3.7 million homes and nearly 2 million of them are already apartments with many more planned. To be honest though there’s only 28k offices empty here as well and by the time you remove the dilapidated or non residentially suitable in that figure it’s much less.

It cost a lot of money to maintain council housing. If councils keep council housing, either rent has to be increased or taxes needeed to be increased to pay for it. I think maintenance cost is the real reason for selling social housing.

@@tresaholmes4868 I know people who bought council flat they lived in. Council charged them £28,000 to do double glazing. For changing common bulbs outside they used scaffolding instead of a ladder. Don't know how much it costed I guess it will be a bit.

That was the problem 40 years ago. They all needed upgrading. New kitchens, bathrooms, heating and windows and doors. Councils did not have the money. That is why they were sold off. Get rid of the laibility at a time we were coming out of the 70's when the government was loaded up to the eyeballs with labours debt and the IMF bailout.

Councilors should have a set salary, equivalent to management in the private sector. Councils should not spend on frivolities or their own 'pet' projects that don't serve the community as a whole. Councils should only employ staff where absolutely necessary(to many 'jobs' have 3 people employed where 1 or 2 would suffice). Councils should be audited publicly every year with every penny earnt/spent accounted for(that would quickly show where money was wasted and where it could be better used). The biggest problem with Councils is that they spend money that isn't theirs!

My grandad has been a resident in his house since around 1972! He was denied the option to buy his house by the Council when he had the money, now he doesn't have the money he has the option. I need to get £50k in order to "Gift" him the money to buy his house, then I can build myself a DJ Studio etc in the garden to learn more about DJ'ing in my time outside of my caring for him and working a full time job. This is a typical policy from someone who doesn't have to worry about money or having a roof over head, typical out of touch MP!

So unfortunately no a Loan is not possible, I basically need to earn it via other legal means which I am looking into including a 2nd and 3rd job!

Not in the days when the houses went up for sale. On my estate in Essex the majority worked and bought their houses. Some of the original right to buyers are still alive and living in their homes.

Councils were given the money from the sales of their hosuing stock but not allowed to use it to build more homes. Which is rather a good idea, as the newly built homes would be eligible for sale under right to buy after a few years, no? And don't forget, when the houses were sold the all costs to the council for maintenance went too (when I was a kid the council used to decorate council houses, cut the hedges, replace roofs, windows etc. etc). The Town and Country planning act 1947 is the reason land is expensive and not enough homes have been built. Plus allowing millions of extra people into an already crowded country is mad (crowded in the areas where people want to live that is). The south east is full.

Council’s I believe were only allowed to keep a percentage of sell of receipts of right to buy and the rest went back to the government, hence why council homes were not replaced and built , so it was the government’s policy that effected the lack of replacing council homes that were purchased . Privatisation by the back door under a thatcher policy she introduced . 😢

The Right to Buy scheme has drawbacks. too! Why were those council houses sold for so much less than the market value? Poor taxpayers without property had to pay the difference and got nothing in return. Councils didn't rebuild council houses and lost regular rent income. Homeless people couldn't move into non-existing old or new council houses. Then why did Thatcher, the milk snatcher, start the RtB scheme? New homeowners make new Tory voters.

My understanding of the right to buy scheme, which is a very good scheme, was that when anybody did purchase their property the money they paid usually via a mortgage went straight to Central government. So no cash available for local councils to build more replacement housing stock.

I didn't realise that the money from the sale was deposited in Icelandic bank accounts that offered higher interest. When the banks in Iceland crashed councils lost their money. Thatcher forbade councils the right to use sale money to build new social housing. A great opportunity lost. One other point, council houses were built to a high standard, council planning offices keeping a close eye on the build. I don't think they care much these days.

I don't disagree with the thrust at all, but coming from Ms Rayner there's something wrong with it at the same time. And then we hear a Labour MP owns 15 homes, which he rents out in a dreadful state, which is actually feeding the problem of the housing shortage because he's taken 15 homes away from those who are trying to get on the housing ladder, but also feeding the problem of rising accommodation prices.

Rayner was on the news again and she will speed-up the repair of blocks of flats with cladding, together with 1.5 million new houses over 5 years whilst Hs2 is still completing and 2 major nuclear power stations are mid way through construction.Where are all the builders coming from ? and when the constructors find out they are in short supply the costs will spiral. Capitol gains tax on 50 grand is nearly 5 grand, Did Mrs Rayner pay it? I paid mine on selling my parents home in 2023 and the reason I know the figure was it was a capitol gain of 50 grand. I'm not employed and have no taxable income but I still had to pay cgt on pain of a threat of a fine or imprisonment.

Right to buy was a disaster ,taking away rentals then complaining there's no houses for people is nuts,my mate liven in his for 5 years then bought it for 30% of the real price,stupid.they had no intentions of building replacements house prices go up quickly you have 30% of the house price in your hand,you have to get land and everything associated with building a house like architects etc.if a house was 150,000 to build you probably have 15 % from the sale left.but hey someone's got a new front door and windows😂

So when someone takes advantage of the Right to Buy, how many months of lost rental income equates to the 10s of 1000s made from the sale? Guessing a couple of years if the sale is only £50k. 4-5 years if £150k. Also no admin costs anymore against that ex rental. The income from the sales, as presuming from rentals l(ess admin/repairs/mantenance/upgrades) would go towards building new homes.
