Quite a few misconceptions here: 1. Hydrogen combustion engines and hydrogen fuel cells are being mentioned alternately. Very confusing. 1a. Both are compared to ICEs and BEVs alternately. Very confusing. 2. Range is mentioned. At least with a hydrogen combustion engine range would be less than current generation BEVs, or the sedan becomes a 2-seater because of the hydrogen tanks. 3. Problems with hydrogen: It's a beast regarding logistics. It has to be stored at very high pressure or very low temperature. Both lowering the already bad efficiency compared to BEVs. Transporting it to other locations is absurdly wasteful. Fueling stations are absurdly expensive and safety is a concern. Refueling takes less time than fast charging a BEV, that's right (for now). But after every refueling the refueling station has to get to pressure again, which takes time. So if you got a car in front of you at the station, bad luck, because you wait longer now than a BEV to wait for another BEV to charge. It's seriously expensive. Like really expensive. The reason why we don't see hydrogen fuel cell cars more on the streets is they are expensive to buy and expensive to drive. Hydrogen combustion engine cars would be quite expensive to buy and absurdly expensive to drive. Who would want that? Maybe ultra rich people, why not. But certainly not normal and sane people. We all vote with our wallets. 4. Hydrogen upsides: It's a good energy storage medium, when used wisely. Like in industrial applications it can be useful and worth the money. For planes it could be useful, although today there's absolutely no way to carry enough hydrogen for medium and long haul flights. Part of the problem is that hydgogen tanks don't fit into wings. At least not the wings of today, radically different shapes could help here. We'll see. Last, but not least, the Hyundai CEO didn't say what's claimed in the headline. Instead Hyundai is quite successful in building ICEs and BEVs and also in selling them. They also sell a FCEV for quite some time now, but not many people want to buy them, even though there are heavy subsidiaries for years.

Biggest problem with hydrogen car is fuel tank for H2. It has to be huge and made of very solid materials, because it оperates at 700 bar pressure. And the worst thing - because the hydrogen molecule is extremely small it is very difficult to stay inside the tank fol a long time. Imagine this, you fill your hydrogen tank to the top, park your car and after a week it is empty without driving the car.

Did we forget to mention a hydrogen burning combustion engine also expels NOx from the tailpipe, which is a pollutant. Another issue you need a much larger tank compared fossil power cars to get the same range. Hydrogen combustion engines and fuel cell motors are still 50% or less efficient. In the UK they are removing hydrogen filling stations because no one is using them. Oh and fuel cell vehicles still need a battery. I'll admit EV charging times are slower then the above, but those who are lucky enough to charge at home can have a full battery when they wake up in the morning and also due to their efficiency the cost per mile is a fraction of hydrogen or fossil fuels. In the UK one of the arguments against EV's is where will all the power come from? Well if we go down the hydrogen route we will need at least twice the amount of electricity and the vehicles to transport it. However I think hydrogen has a big role in large transport; Ships, planes and trucks where there can be a central filling point. and to finish it maybe the most common element in the universe, but on planet earth you have to make it, there is really only one green and sustainable way of making it which is electrolysis, but as already mentioned you need a lot of power.
@kckfen

The problem with hydrogen is the infrastructure needed to support it actually need more power plant if you use environmentally friendly to produce hydrogen with the efficiency of energy transfer to car of 25% compare to energy transfer to car from plant to car for BEV about 75%... Hydrogen is not the future for private vehicles. First of all, the energy efficiency to produce hydrogen is extremely poor. So why don't take the energy directly to move your car? Why use it in a wasteful way to transform it into a different medium? Also, to produe hydrogen, most of the companies use fossil ressources to generate the energy :). So nothing with CO2 neutral. It only makes sense if the energy used for creating this fuel is generated out of renewable ressources and co2 neutral. And at the end, you will need hydrogen in industries where big batteries are not possible like aviation industry. They have a strong need and will drive the pricing. It's gonna be a pretty expensive ressource compared to energy.

@speedcreep2605
@speedcreep2605 10 месяцев назад
Point by point. Hydrogen is inefficient: true but you only need to create new infrastructure to support it in specific locations, unlike electric vehicles which will require that the supporting infrastructure exist nearly everywhere. It's almost as feasible to support hydrogen in rural North Daktoa as it is in California, that's not true for electric vehicles. The hydrogen will be produced using primarily fossil fuels: No more true than its true for electric vehicles. Most electricity in the US comes from fossil fuel. You'll only need it where big batteries are not possible: you seem to be suggesting that batteries are preferable. There are costs to producing and disposing of said batteries, batteries with relatively short lifespans at that. Hydrogen may not be the answer, but electric vehicles are certainly not the answer.
@amigafrk
@amigafrk 10 месяцев назад
@@speedcreep2605 so you wanna tell .en that there is no power network in north Dakota ? I mean we all know that the us is a development country when it comes to power infrastructure, but it's quite hard to argue when most people heat their house with electricity. It's also a lie that the infrastructure for hydrogene is just there, it's not. It has to be built up and I would say it's easier to create a proper power network which is not vulnerable to every storm, heavy rain or snow fall. Because the technology for this has been there for centuries.

When did hydrogen fuel cell and hydrogen combustion become the same thing? Author seems to be confused. Combustion still emits nitrous oxides if not done right. Combustion is inefficient, after a century of refinement the best we can do is about 40%. Hydrogen like you say is produced which is about 75% efficient currently. Most hydrogen production is currently from fossil fuels which should get conspiracy theorists thinking. So let's see back to efficiency.. 100%÷(75%x40%)= 3.33 times the "green" energy required to power a hydrogen combustion vehicle compared to an ev. For most people charging an ev is quicker and easier. Just plug it in at home and walk away compared to awkward pressurised cold and heavy gas connections that you should oversee, drive to and pay a premium for the infrastructure, 3rd party profit, convenience and in-efficiency of. But I'm sure it will have a use somewhere or while govt props it up. And not everyone can plug in at home so there needs to be a lot of investment either way.
