Realistically this competes more with the Focus, Astra, 308, Megane, Bravo, Leon, Auris, Pulsar and its sister car the Ceed. The Golf has better ride comfort, better perceived quality, a better badge and a somewhat higher price tag. In short WYPIWYG (what you pay is what you get).
It's amazing how far Hyundai has come... At my second job, where my job is literally to drive cars about, ranging from old clunkers to DB10 Astons... I got the chance to drive quite a few Hyundais and I liked most of them. They are comfortable, they drive well, a bit down on power... but whatever. And the DCT gearbox is brilliant. Shifts quickly at the right points and has manual mode so you can fool around. I also like the amount of tech you get for your money. Lane assist, blindspot monitor, reversing camera, digital radio and tons of other goodies. Also the interior is a nice place to be. It doesn't remind you that you are driving a cheaper car constantly like the interior in the Fiat Tipo does for example.
Whats wrong with this car? Jesus people are hard pleased these days. Better looking than the VW Golf and the overrated new Astra, it drives well and the previous version scored well for reliability so this will probably do as well.
Astra isn't overrated belive me I have one it is really good it really is better than VW Golf and Ford Focus but this Hyundai I30 is also really good a bit better than astra
This is true as the i30 gets a panoramic sunroof heated and cooled seats. The golf doesn’t even get cooled seats or this panoramic sunroof when it is bloody hot everyday here in Australia plus that sick wireless charging and as you walk up to the car it greats you with lights and unfolding mirrors. i30 is the winner here.
Can't help but notice a bit of badge snobbery and bias. This guy is out of touch with the general populous and his condescending remarks about the i30 shows that. Unless you have money to burn the i30 is a better buy then both the focus and the golf. Not so much talking about features but customer service and reliability; Volkswagen has the shittest customer service and a plethora of reliablility issues.....
Does it come with VW golf problems, ripoff parts pricing and arrogant VW service staff too? ...No? Good, I'll take it! Honestly car reviews never seem to take into consideration the utter frustration that comes with having to take your car back to the dealer for the 3rd or 4th time get something fixed that should have never gone wrong in the first place. It makes any nice new car feel like a POS.
Driver6M i couldnt agree more with you! vw and audi are a pile of shit! i previously owned both and never again! i now have a 4 year old peugeot which has never gave me an issue. the 3008 looks like my next car
my dad bought 2010 VW Golf GTI brand new, he loves the car, but he was treated like absolute shit right from the actual sales staff. They were really arrogant, and he paid a premium for the extras such as the navi system and sunroof. He was told it came with bluetooth but found out later it didn't, and they wouldn't do anything about it, so he wrote a letter of complaint to head office. He got no response. He has always had his car serviced at VW, spent a fortune with issues he had, and regardless of the bill, they always treated him like shit by speaking down to him and just having general attitude problems. He now takes it to a private certified VW mechanic who not only treats him like a customer, but charges far less than VW. In 2013, I bought an i30, and I have to say that I have loved their service. Services are cheap, they listen to everything I had to say and just plain pleasant. I was able to book and get a car for the day, just no dramas whatsoever. Car has been perfectly reliable, not the most fuel efficient, but good, and it is comfortable to be in on long distance drives as well as the short trips. My battery died on my key, replacement was $15. Like I said, no dramas!
I drove this car for a week on hire. I have to say I was impressed. I drive a Golf personally but really couldn't tell the difference in terms of build quality. It was quiet and comfort was really good.
I love the filter you used on this video... The shouting green and orange makes the video attractive and urban. Such variety makes your videos more interesting but informative. Keep it uo
From "that" start i was expecting a biased review, and it was. I went to see the golf review, and the same defects were just listed and not highlithed. I am not a fan of this car, but i didnt like this review, at all.
People are dumb, a Golf is literally THE most obvious boring choice out there, sure it might have soft touch plastics, but like the i30, it won't have them everywhere. Also you'd probably only get a poverty spec model for the same price as any of it's rivals, but people will fall for it because of simple badge snobbery & residiual values. People also have very short term memory problems regarding the dieselgate scandal, that alone would keep me out of a VAG product.
Zerofightervi 100% agree.!!! Badge snobbery in England is almost laughable, theres that much of it!! The Germans know they can be lazy with some cars and people will pay for it regardless.
Joshua L Thank you, I thought I was going to have to defend my stance on the beloved German manufacturers. It's all very well journalists singing the praises of the latest ( VAG/BMW/Merc ) but they fail to give you the whole story, they are too complicated for their own good. Styling wise I think they've hit a brick wall, I mean look at the latest 5 series BMW, it looks sooooo dull.
Zerofightervi I mean I drive a 3 series, great machine but lacks so much personality. What I've learned is that BMW's are great cars but overhyped. People look at cars with German blinkers on, failing to see plenty of decent alternatives out there. If i was to get a hatch it would have to be a Volvo V40 for me!
Zerofightervi Not buying a VAG car because of dieselgate is the dumbest thing i've heard in a long time. Almost every car manufacturer provided wrong emission data for their diesel cars. Even Harley had their engines run so lean while emission tests, that they barely run. At the dealer they just get a softwareupdate that's probably called " screaming eagle of liberty ". Please read whole articles and not just headlines. All in all the media realy blew Dieselgate up and VW reputation is ruined....just because people can't read and only jump from headline to headline...shark pool jounalism.
Because motoring journalists in general (not just Matt) consider the Golf to be the "benchmark" for a good all-round family hatchback. Personally, I disagree because I think the Gold/Focus/Audi A3 etc are the ones that need to justify why they cost _more_ than the i30 for the same features (and for the Focus, a smaller boot!)
Body work - esp front end - very nice looking, i think. Might be mistaken for the Focus, or better. BTW, Nice job, Mat & team. Like the new range of angles inside the car, including the over-the-shoulder. And the audio seems improved.
still group vw biased.... how long is their warranty, two years? how about in the reliability index? you tell us about the golf and audi still you bought a type r... and the emissions gate? all forgotten and forgiven? unsubscribed
fairly sure no-one in the UK knows what a liftback is (seems to be an american thing), its a hatchback because the boot opens with the window, as the hinge is above the rear window.
The previous i30 was the top selling car in Australia for a few months in 2016 and rounded out the year in 3rd so I'll be interested to see how this one sells when it arrives here.
I feel for some reason you reviewed this car alot more in-depth than others you've reviewed. I think you were trying to catch out Hyundai - bit of a badge snob maybe?
Can't believe I love this Korean brand new i30 a lot. It's the only car that I wanna buy. My Volkswagen Golf mk7 seems like not as fashionable as this car lol. A lot of new features and very practical
I still see people talking down on Hyundai and Kia saying they produce POS cars and all that but they've been both one of the best car manufacturers in the past 5 years, especially with Kia. I owned a KIA Forte and it was fine for the 5 years I had it for and I'd get another one. In the US I don't think we are getting this vehicle but I think it's going to be the performance N30 if I'm not mistaken.
SimpleGamer actually we are getting this car, only even better! it's the 2018 elantra GT and GT sport which FINALLY has a turbo option! so excited! yours truly, owner of a 2006 and 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT
Mate you caused me to buy previous 1,5 tones i30 by your good comments and flying colours. you picked it even best car. then i bought it 1,5 tone 2nd ww tank. 1,6 crdi engine was effortless to carry that weight. İ swore and swore every day especially on curvy roads and ramps. Hope this time your comments would be neutral, logical and fair. Lets see
wow....the location, camera, editing, everything was so much better, the background score along with the new style of presentation gets a big thumbs up...keep it up people.
Think it's not really fair comparing the boot space with the Skoda Octavia as the Octavia wipes the floor with every other car in the class. How does the I30 compare to other cars also mentioned in the review , golf, focus, astra and 308?
Please compare this vs mazda3 and golf. I'm interested in these 3 cars but I'm not sure which is the most refined, luxurious, has the better space overall and has the best tech overall
Nice video, is there any chance you might compare the new audi tt with the gen 2 or even gen 1? I'm really doubting on if I should spend extra on the gen3 ? Love the show btw!
When he said the car's interior would suit the black glossy plastic on the central part along the front, I can't help but think that if it did look like that, he'd complain about finger prints.
I love how he keeps going on about rubberised floors of pockets and storage areas... The optional extras on this car, on the base model alone outshines the mid range and upper range extras... An altogether more viable option
Funny how the Golf is only seen as a reference in the EU, travel around the world and it is only seen as boring European box...My money would still go on 308 or Megane
Great review. As an IX35 owner there appears to be a big leap in quality of the cabin. Exterior styling is a bit bland (as are most small hatches) but the i30 looks classy from certain angles. Look forward to seeing the new i30 in the metal.
The i30 will do well precisely because it is a White Good! Rental car companies buy this in bulk. I've driven the earlier version of this on a roadtrip around Ireland and it was great! Good on narrow, twisty roads hauling two passengers and luggage around up and down the coastline. It's certainly not the most dynamic drive, but I felt safe, comfortable and economical to rent.
I currently have a Golf GTI mk7 but I've been following the i30N for some time now. I can't wait to test drive it because it does look good. But the price would have to beat the likes of the Golf GTI and Audi S3 to make it worthwhile. If it costs just as much as the German rivals then you may as well get the VW or Audi because you get a much better badge for the same money. However I doubt it will be cheap enough. I did have interest in the 308 GTi but when I learned how much it was, I knew there was no way I'd choose it over the Golf.
I disagree with placing shiny gloss (piano) black trim. Its terrible on larger surfaces and its nice to have a few colors other than just black in the interior.
Hey Mat! Will you be able to do a review of the new Honda civic? I know it's only available to America but would be good to see a good review about it! Thanks!
I just can´t stop wondering where did you recorded the video hahaha! I´m from Madrid and its -5ºC outside right now. I´m just looking for the "sunny spain" btw ;(
Most people buy small hatchbacks like they buy white goods. Most people buy cars for their practicality, reliability, aesthetics and safety. Performance and fun are secondary, fun being the least important of all ... most people are not petrol heads car nuts. Also, considering that most car manufacturers dial out the fun factor and prepare for electric self driving cars, fun cars to drive are already and will become even more niche :((((
I dont get all the bashing on this car. It's an economy car that is practical, looks good outside and inside. Even if you do not like the design you got to admit.. it looks of quality unlike the older korean cars. Wish this sold in my country..
Look at the grille of a 2015 Hyundai Genesis (introduced in late 2013) then look at the grills of MY 2014 and before Audis and then ask if Hyundai copied Audi or if Audi copied Hyundai. Audi didn't go with a hexagonal grill until the 2nd gen Q8 was introduced.
Actually it's the x-designer of BMW. KAI is the one that has the x-designer of Audi. This will definitely be a high seller here in the states. The market calls here for SUVs and now hatchbacks too, sedans are suffering over here
"In favour of more stylish SUV"... couldn't agree less with this estatement. The SUV trend is only the consequence of the demise of good taste among the average car buyer.
On the outside, I like the sloped back and curvy lines of my last gen i30/Elantra GT more. But I prefer the upscale classy look of this new interior more.
Brilliantly done. The camerawork for this review is so good, and so is Spain, beautiful as ever. I guess it's time for a change in scenery Carwow. Perhaps some other parts of England?
Peter Schreyer did an amazing job for Kia and Hyundai. Style isn't exclusive to luxury brands anymore, therefore democratizing elegance in automotive design. The rear of the Hyundai Santa Fe has uncanny resemblance to the 2003 Audi Pikes Peak, just look at the taillights.
