Back when Hyundai/Kia made quality all metal key ignition assemblies. Starting in 2011 some genius at Hyundai/Kia decided to make the ignition switch out of plastic instead of metal. This allowed the key cylinder to get easily removed without the use of any tools hence it being stolen with USB cords. The models with the metal assembly (seen in this video) does not have an immobilizer but you'll tools and a lot of force to start the ignition.

Same for me. That switch that he pulls out on the backend of the cylinder is what I need to replace. Car has power but will not turn over or click. Fuse and battery continuity is good so it has to be that white plastic switch. Just can't find anyone showing how to get to it. If I can fix it it would save hundreds of dollars in towing and repair.
Is the steering plunger brass? I think I sheared mine with my ass.... I was getting in my wife's car. She has short legs. I hit the steering wheel hard. It went into steering lock. Now it won't release no matter how much I jiggle or wiggle.
This was very educational at a time that I need to do this to my 05 Optima. Not going to remove column but drop it down to gain access to those security bolts. Why couldn't they just used security bolts instead. Ugh... Thanks for the video.
that was great, really appreciated it, however you didnt explain what part you replaced to make it work. this was helpful for me because my hyundai tirburon was stole, they removed the lock cylinder, and the ignition switch, and i need to decide weather i need to replace that housing or not. as i am ordering parts, and purchasing a new lock cylinder.
Great video, James. You had me as soon as I realized that both you and I are TWO of the only SEVEN people in North America who realize the company's name rhymes with SUNDAY. (Why they never used that in an ad campaign, I'll never know. Oh well.) My challenge to you, and any of your hundreds of followers, is, I think even simpler than the problem you've solved here....and that is: WHAT IS IT THAT NEEDS FIXING IF MY 09 SANTA FE WILL "START" WHEN I SIMPLY TURN THE KEY TO "ON"? Oh, and how do I DO whatever it NEEDS? Based on what I see you doing here...I'd HOPE it's as simple as removing and replacing the "ignition switch"....that white plastic thingy you remove beginning at 9:00. D'ya suppose that's all I need? I have the same problem with my Hyundai ATOS from 2002 (manual transmission). I guess the components are very similar! But what part of this assembly should I suspect?? The thing where the key sits, or that long thing "downhill" (behind) from that? That thing which is aligned in the same direction as the key! Please please give me some hints, because I really need to solve this problem ASAP! The key is very worn I should add. We can unlock the steering lock, but cannot turn the key further to ignition position or start!
I can't turn the i20 key to on position. It's stuck at off and steering wheel is locked. So, how to remove the ignition cylinder whenever this situation happens??
I just want to say thank you for this tutorial. I was struggling like crazy on how to assemble the center guide into the ignition switch in the back. I spent 5 hours trying to do that not knowing about the security lock for the gears. installed the guide, put it in reverse, it locked it in. Thank you bud!
Hey my Hyundai accent had the same issue where the switch cylinder (white mechanism at the back) went bad and my car needed programming, the mechanic bypassed the system and played with the wiring to add ignition and accessories switch along with a push start. This was my first experience and my car was stuck midway where the mechanic assisted me just wanted to know how much would it cost me if I need to do the complete ignition change along with programming??
Very helpful…. My husband got everything out and put everything back in and everything works on car except car engine won’t crank. Ac works, radio etc. just not engine.
I have Hyundai accent 2000year and I lost the key. Car is in lock position and I cant get it to accesory mode. Im trying to break a pin for a 2 hours and nothing seems to work.

No, this is four years later, but just wanted to say amazing video for minutes and I realize what I needed because you did the hard work of pulling out the whole column with the center punch tool I may be able to just pull out the lock cylinder when I come back from Harbor freight getting a center punch tool again life saving video
I was just wondering are all these ignition switches the same that look like this one??? So I just ordered one for my car looks simple to install without removing all the panels.
@@alexandrepelletier1884 I ended up donating my car for a local non-profit that fixes up and gives away cars for people stuck in a cycle of poverty due to unreliable transportation. They have better tools and experience than I do to fix it right. Problem is a piece inside that ignition cylinder that sticks and jams sometimes. That, and a plastic piece inside the steering column that catches it. Unfortunately, that part in the steering column is inaccessible behind breakaway bolts.
I have a question for you. I changed my ignition cylinder key lock and replaced by a new one, put it on accessory and the new part do not turn lock so I can’t remove the key. Any idea what’s going on?
Why do you say turn key to ON position to take the switch off, and all the other videos changing the switch, say turn it to ACCESSORY ? Can do it either way ?
Sounds a little more...."complex", shall we say? But definitely sounds workable. (Providing, of course, the "fingers" of the pliers are long/deep/rigid enough to extend down to the bolt head without being interfered with by the walls of the inset)
When you dont have the luxury of having column out, first insert steering lock gently. Finesse it into place. Index the round plunger dot at 5-6 o clock. Once it fully seats you can easily feel the bottom side. It will be at a 2 oclock position. Then finesse the white switch into place. Then screw it down. Now you can get the key lock into place and it will finally seat into position allowing the lock pin to engage.
Does that solenoid also control any of the starting functions other than when the car is in Park? My car will sometimes not start and other times it will start and if left in Park or Neutral the starter will randomly engage. I was thinking it was the solenoid that needs to be replaced. What are your thoughts?
