On the forums many people prefer the 28 kW version of this car for whatever reason. I think it's because buying the 28 kW used is so much better value than buying the 38 kW new and the charging curve in the 28 kW is much better. I also personally prefer both the exterior and the interior of the 28 kW (I hate touch buttons).

Hi Bjprn This might interest you, I am a Ioniq owner and enthusiast: I have just come back from just over a 2 month stay in Poland (without my Ioniq EV) before leaving I was unable to find any solid info/advice on how to store, or advisability of leaving the car for so long, even my garage did not have any idea. Anyway, I left it locked in my garage at home (Southern Brittany) with 190 km and 83% battery, I came back this afternoon and was very happy to find it now had 186 km and 82% battery. I started it and took it for a short drive, no problems. The weather while I was away was very wet and windy with temperatures ranging from -2 to 12 with several weeks hovering around 0. Needless to stay, I was extremely relieved at not coming home to a bricked battery

Nice video Bjorn. Last June I saw another video you made with the Ioniq and then I bought one. This winter in Quebec is particularly harsh but I never had any problem with my Ioniq even at -30°C. At such low temperatures though the autonomy goes down to 115 km.

I'm also in Quebec and this year's harsh winter has been a great test for my Ioniq, Bjorn's first Ioniq videos sold me on the idea of getting it. I get between 115km and 160km when is it colder than -12C (we've had many days this year below -25). I tested an Ioniq extensively last week, and my impressions: it is a nice car. Positive: excellent price/quality, great efficiency with the regen options and driver only mode, great extra's (ACC, ventilated seats in premium, leather look). The active battery management temperature system is a great plus. Negative: Sitting position. I am 6 foot 4 and because the console in the middle has a gap on the front your right leg has no resting position. It wobbles around in that gap. Furthermore, despite the seats having electric adjustment possibilities, i couldn't find a suitable driving position. It seems to high even at the lowest setting, and the seats don't have side bolstering (sport seats like, or how you call it in english). In the next week I will try the e-golf.

Hi Bjørn sorry to be so boring, but I think your videos are exceptionally informative. I just bought the Ioniq for my wife but she insisted on the PHEV. "Range anxiety" I guess but she drives 10 km to work round trip 20 km so she will burn very very little Gas. Fun fact the Ioniq has the same drag co-efficient as the Tesla Model S at normal highway speeds of course.Great car, Great value. Great performance, Great PRICE! Just a small question about the Battery being fast charged to 100%, was that level 2 I assume or was it level 3? Because would warm the battery significantly in cold weather instead of 100% cold soaked in a charge and go.

Hi Bjorn thanx for the videos they are really impressive and i really like following you. I am thinking about buying an Ioniq but i usually have to drive about 200 to 300 km on the weekends and on the highways the speed limit is at 120 Km/h so I was wondering if you can make a test drive of the ioniq at that speed. I think that this would be a more realistic test for drivers who are whiling to use their EV for any kind of situation ( that is long range, medium range driving) Thanx a lot for all the efforts you take to make all of your videos and I am looking forward to see more!!

I cannot agree - it’s more. I have not seen less than 150km with my IONIQ and I am living in Germany (Autobahn) and always do 120-130km/h. In late September I did a >300km trip (Autobahn only) and charged 3 times - and the was not empty when I did it. Right now my normal range is 170km to 180km depending on temperature. The temperature has less effect than wet roads in my experience

I'Ve also had more range than Bjorn says on highways. But I was never going faster than 100 kph. At 120 kph, if you are in ECO mode and keep a steady speed you should get more than 140 km range but less than 200 km. Obviously going uphill and against the wind will also diminish your range.

@arshamskrenes
@arshamskrenes 6 лет назад
Bjorn, you keep saying that putting the EV in neutral down the hill is necessary because regen is only 90% efficient. But what you fail to remember is that wind resistance goes up by the cube of the speed. So speeding down a hill 30% faster than cruise control would waste 100% energy, a lot more than 10% waste heat from regen. It’s the same reason why driving at a lower velocity gets you much more range (less wind resistance).
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 6 лет назад
You forgot that there's two times loss. About 80-90 % for regen and another 90 % for discharging. Ioniq has a drag coefficient of 0.24. As you saw in the video, the speed only increased from 80 to 100 km/h which is not to the point where air resistance is significant compared to charging*discharging losses.
@arshamskrenes
@arshamskrenes 6 лет назад
Let me give you the exact numbers, so you understand. For arguments sake, if we use your worst case numbers (80% for regen; 90% for discharging), that's 0.8*0.9 = 72% overall regen efficiency. That means you'd need 1/0.72 = 1.39x the energy, or 1.39^(1/3) the speed, which means if you were going 80 km/h, you'd need to regen at 89 km/h to get back the same energy as driving at 80 km/h. You got up to 100 km/h, which means you were wasting (100/89)^3 = 1.42x more energy than whatever your Wh/km was to cruise at 80 km/h, which was (132 Wh/km * 1.42 - 132 Wh/km) ~55 Wh/km. So by putting it in neutral for 1 minute and traveling 1.5 km, you broke the speed limit (assuming it was 80 km/h) and wasted 82.5 Wh of energy (1.5 km * 55 Wh/km). And that's a bad case scenario for overall efficiency (72%)... that those torque levels, it's more like 80-85%.

@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 6 лет назад
+Arsham Skrenes You left out important details. The speedometer is incorrect. 80 and 100 km/h was in reality 75 and 95 km/h. I'm on mobile phone on the airplane right now. So I have limited typing ergonomics. I done some quick math. It turns out that because the speed was so low and the rolling resistance on wet road so high, rolling resistance is the biggest component in the total force needed to maintain speed. Rolling resistance 314 N 75 km/h: 134 N (air) + 314 N (roll) = 448 N 95 km/h: 215 N (air) + 314 N (roll) = 529 N 18 % increase in force needed. You can probably figure out the rest why coasting at these speeds were in fact more efficient than regen.

@Michel_Gougeon
@Michel_Gougeon 6 лет назад
That's obviously with a BRCC charger not with the home charger provided with the car. I don't know what type of charger is provided in Europe but in North-America the charger that comes with the car provides only 12A at 120 volts so it takes 24 hours to go from 0% to full charge. We can also buy 240 volts chargers for home use and get a full charge in 6 hours. I let my car charge overnight and I have not needed to use a fast charger yet. With the low price of clean electricity in Quebec it's very cheap to charge at home. At 14KWh / 100 km my cost is 0,90 $ per 100 km. The fuel cost for a Hyundai Elantra, which is the closest ICE equivalent, is 8,74 $ / 100 km at current gas prices in Quebec (1,25 $ / liter).

I have to make a little correction about electricity costs in Quebec. Here are the exact rates for residential consumption: Fixed charge per day in the consumption period: 0,4064 $ Price of energy for energy consumption up to 33 kWh times the number of days in the consumption period (1st tier): 0,0582 $ / kWh Price of energy for the remaining energy consumption (2nd tier): 0,0892 $/ kWh In the winter, my consumption goes up a lot because I use electrical heating, so I pay a 30 to 40% of it at 2nd tier price plus the fixed daily charge. But the rest of the year, I pay all my electricity at 0,0582 $ / KWh and the fixed charge is the same whether I have an electric car or not.

RU-vid algorithms are so dumb. Every time I watch an EV video they show me an ad for an ICE car. Not only are they trying to offload all their crappy ICE cars but their ICE adverts as well lol.
