If you've never used auto regen or if you've used auto regen and disliked it on your Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 or Genesis GV60 then this is a must watch. Auto regen has so much to offer you if you know how to use it and what rules and parameters are in place.
I tried it a couple of times during my first month of ownership and really disliked it. But that was because I didn't know how to use it, I didn't know the rules and parameters, and I didn't know about the hidden levels!
Fast forward to my 5th month of ownership and I've finally figured it all out because I gave it another chance a few weeks ago. I've been using it every day since then because I find it extremely useful.
Looking for one pedal driving but don't want the heavy pedal feel of I-Pedal? Prefer the one pedal driving style but don't want to lose efficiency because your AWD model can't disengage the front motor at higher speeds? The answer is AUTO REGEN!
Part 1 is the intro to get you familiar with the basic rules and parameters, just watching this video alone may be enough for you to figure out the rest. But Part 2 will be coming soon, maybe even Part 3 if I can't fit everything else into Part 2.

Exceptionally useful information and visuals. One small discrepancy, which may be a Genesis UI difference, or maybe a software update since this video was made, but on my Genesis, the word "AUTO" does not change to GREEN, but rather, the electric-bolt icon lights up green when sensor-based regen is activated. Took me a while to figure that out.

This is the best auto regen explanation video in this planet... I appreciate your effect in explaning things systemically and with data support, which is uncommon in youtube Regen Paddle is of the main reasons why I get a Ioniq 5 (well estimated arrival date = 2023Q4), and auto regen is one of the options that remain mysterious to me. Thanks Duncan! You're going to love the Ioniq5's system if you are interested in regen. There are so many ways to use it/drive it, without a doubt the most flexible system on the market (same as ev6, gv60). Still quite a wait for yours it looks like, but I think it's worth the wait :)

great video! I love the auto regen mode (exclusively using it now) and if it's not working in low speed and I'm too lazy to turn on i-Pedal, I can just hold the left paddle until the car stops completely, basically braking without your foot brake (the regen indicator will turn from "Auto" into "Stop")

Thanks! Yupp that's what I often do as well if I'm in auto regen and need to come to a stop. I wish they would let auto regen have access to max regen but all in all still really loving it.

Victor, this is fantastic information. When I first read the manual and even until watching this video, I couldn't understand what the three settings in the screens regarding Regen were about (Gentle, etc.) I read that section of the manual several times to no avail. I also had given up on Auto for the reason you mentioned - I couldn't coast like Regen setting 0. I live in a hilly area and coast frequently. I also like to coast when on the highway. I assume based on this video that you are now using Gentle as your setting. I'm off to the garage right now to change mine. I'll be giving Auto more of a workout in Gentle and knowing that I can still toggle the Regen levels with the paddles while in Auto. Again, thank you!!

Glad this is helpful! Yupp I use gentle and it feels almost the same as level 0 coasting. It's to the point that if the gauge wasn't there I wouldn't be able to tell. But unlike level 0 regen, gentle regen can actually increase as you go downhill. I found the electricity use page to be super helpful with understanding what is going on.

Good video, like others I just use auto regen, gentle setting, I find this the most smooth for driving and when I come across a good hill to get some free electric back I use the left paddle. 👍

Thank you for this, I didn't even know auto Regen was a thing let alone this customizable. Took me forever to figure out utility mode for camping and drive in theaters too. (Yes those still exist, and double features can't be beat)

Great Video, actually set of videos on regeneration! Just got my EV6 two weeks ago. I've mostly been driving in ECO mode assuming that is the most efficient mode for both city and hwy driving in general. I assume there might not be much difference with using Normal mode instead of ECO on the highway. I've mostly been driving with HDA on the highway as I assume it pretty well drives most of the time in auto 0 or auto 1 until it comes upon a car and then ramps up Regen levels as needed. When not in HDA on highway I like to use AUTO regen level 1 in slightly more congested highway driving, where maintaining a set speed is not available, as it helps with preventative breaking over just using regular regen level 1. For the city I've found level 3 regen to be pretty good most of the time and in stop and go heavily congested city streets i-pedal is perfect. Is there really any time when you think not using HDA or Auto regen is beneficial? Thanks and again great explanations on the regen levels; best I've seen online.

You're welcome! Yupp you are right, we can do it manually. The auto regen system itself cannot access max regen so owners just need to be aware of that so they don't expect the car to full stop for them.

I understand automakers trying to help neophytes transition to EVs from their ICEs with several levels of regen. However, after driving an EV for more than a decade I opine that one-pedal driving is the only way to go. Yes, it takes getting used to, but in a very short time becomes completely natural. When I sell my Model 3 and buy an Ioniq 5, I will always use i-Pedal -even though it doesn't remain the default setting after shutting down the car. Hope Hyundai changes that!

That's an interesting take, I have nowhere near the driving time as you do in an EV so very curious why you think it's the only way to go? With the ioniq 5 there will be a noticeable drop in efficiency if you choose to drive one pedal only at all speeds. AWD models can disengage the front motor if you know the proper drive modes, regen settings and stay above 15mph. Below 15mph it will engage both motors and at that point I see the benefit of using one pedal driving. Above that it would seem to be a waste unless you are in sport mode and want both motors engaged.

I’m literally on day 2 of owning an EV6 GT, and the stronger regeneration settings make the car feel more and more like my 2001 Honda S2000, but without having to clutch and shift. I’ll try I-Pedal today.

AUTO REGEN is in the manual but it is called SMART RECUPERATION. It's in chapter-6. I recommend downloading the manual and using "find" to locate most topics of interest.

I think Auto Regen can bring you to a stop if you are using cruise control. It will speed up also (except when it stops; then you have to press the acc pedal or toggle up the cruise control button-the screen tells you so)

When using cruise control it actually disables the paddles and you cannot manually select or control the Regen. We have adaptive cruise control in our ioniq 5s which means it will speed up and slow down for us based on the car ahead. Thats what you are referring to. When used on highways it's called HDA and will automatically resume from a stop without any input from you. Sounds like you are using it on non highway roads which is fine too but it will not auto resume from a stop. Auto Regen is only possible when not using cruise control, hold the right paddle until you see auto appear.

When stepping on the brake pedal does Hyundai use brake blending, and if so, does it work in any of the 4 modes of regenerative braking, or auto modes of regen braking? Especially mode "0"

Great video! Just wish it included how the levels might affect the result of using the brake pedal. Just got my 2023 EV6 and was disappointed to find that level 0 apparently also changes the result of pressing on the brake pedal -- to no regen!

Thanks! Ya I didn't use the physical brake pedal much haha. The only thing I really noticed like you mentioned is that going level 0 will remove Regen also from the brake pedal also. Otherwise in all other levels brake pedal does use Regen.

Haven't checked it out myself yet, but I saw somewhere that using the brake pedal in level 0 will still activate regen but only after the first 10 brake applications. Seems weird, but since the brakes can get pretty (c)rusty when you don't use them much, it lets you clean them without having to jam on the brakes beyond the regen capability or use them to come to a stop when you are used to using the left paddle to stop. This manual refers to this, just not very clearly.

Haven't finished the series yet. But I'm curious if the voice commands work for regen. All that paddle play seems like a major distraction while driving.

Unfortunately I don't think the voice commands can access regen. The paddles definitely take some concentration if you plan to change manually. Myself and many others have found it similar in many ways to driving a manual/stick shift car in terms of driver engagement. So it's definitely not everyone's ideal driving style. I'm glad the engineers built in multiple ways to drive/brake.

Hello Victor its been a while how are you. I tend to stay in regen level 2 and the odd time i am in heavy stop and go traffic i will use the I pedal . The only problem I think about is people behind me must think I ride the brake as as soon as i lift off the brakes lights come on , not sure if you can see this on the dash of the Ioniq 5 , but in the Genesis GV 60 it show the rear of my car on the screen and the brake lights coming on. I wasn't aware of the 'hidden levels' of regen braking, so I looked on the infotainment screen on my RIGHT hand drive I5 and it isn't there! Maybe it only comes on US models. I drive mostly on Auto regen Level 3 which works well for me. Keep up the good work, very interesting.

1 pedal driving doesn't allow coasting. It also requires that you always keep your foot on the pedal. I like to rest my foot and much prefer to use the paddles to bring me to a stop instead of using my foot on the pedal. I spend 2-3 hours per day driving in city driving so it's gets tiring if I have to do it all in 1 pedal driving. Adaptive cruise is great for wide open roads with no traffic or very slow moving bumper to bumper traffic. It's not the greatest in medium density traffic where cars are cutting in and out of lanes in front of you. That's because it's already accelerating more than you want in those situations. Auto Regen does most of the braking you'd want from adaptive cruise but none of the acceleration.

Is it possible to have the car default to a regen level other than 3? Whenever I start the car, it is at 3 no matter what I had it set to prior. Thanks for this info! I didn't even know there was an auto level. I'll be playing around with it next time I head out (I've only had it for about a month). 2023, US, SEL trim.

It seems to default to level 3 most times. I have seen it default to level 0, 1 or 2 mostly likely when that was the previous level chosen. It just won't remember ipedal or auto regen unfortunately.

If you set auto regen, does it default back to manual regen when you shut off? Do you have to set it up every time you drive. One of the minor nuisances is that if you like something like I-Pedal, you can't set it up one time but have to set every time you start since it defaults to manual regen 3 on start up.

Ya unfortunately it resets to a manual level if you've been in auto. Hoping they do an update eventually so we can choose default level.

Thanks for putting in the time to explain this. My Ioniq 5 is RWD and I just use I-Pedal for slow speed driving or adoptive cruise/ HDA for 50mph+ roads. It would be useful if Hyundai allowed I-Pedal to work with one motor on dual motor drivetrains. Perhaps if ECO mode was always a single motor option and Normal mode dynamically changed between using one and two motors.

I wish I had a chance to try out the RWD model because I'm really curious how ipedal feels in that application. What you outlined is roughly what our drive modes do with the AWD models. Eco defaults mostly to RWD and Normal defaults to RWD until you give enough throttle to engage the front motor too. The problem is that in any drive mode, activating ipedal forces both motors on since it's trying to get max regen through both motors. Also for AWD anytime we dip below 15mph in any drive mode both motors kick on.

@@CarsJubilee I have only driven the 160KW (at the dealership) and 125KW RWD (personal car) models. There is a notable difference between the two , though not much. The 125KW still feels quick enough at the low end to leave other cars off the line. I would prefer the 160KW one though as I think it is a blend between a bit of performance and efficiency. Yes, I saw your other video when you uploaded, it surprised me as I assumed the modes would have been more dynamic. It is strange Hyundai didn't give at least the option to customise the motor usage in settings based on the modes for AWD cars. Especially given all of the other options in the settings and the fact that even just one motor in operation with a heavier vehicle should be sufficient. For me with my RWD car, ECO appears to have no difference from Normal (except perhaps at very low battery levels). Using ECO on a long drive, the throttle response felt the same. I leave it in Normal but I will probably continue to use ECO on long journeys in case it makes a slight difference, perhaps with HDA engaged.

I have set mine to soft which is the lowest and it works okay not as good as it did on the kona but it does pick up the car in front howler if I put it in regen 3 it still regents when no one in front of me although not quite as aggressive as it did before so it seems soft and auto 1 is the mode for me but still to see your next vid.

I've been setting it to gentle and then making sure when I'm in auto to manually set it to the lowest level possible (based on the regen gauge). Then if you have open road ahead and let go of the accelerator it should feel very close to level 0 regen. Then if you come up on traffic ahead the regen level will automatically adjust to the cars ahead and then reset to the lowest level you toggled to when things open up again.

I'm not sure our cars can be towed while on and in drive because that's what you would need to regen. My guess is no haha

I’m flying out of state to pick up my I5 Limited and then driving it back home 1,200 miles. The vast majority will be interstate highways. Can you recommend a Regen setting for the drive home since I really won’t have time to “experiment” with the different settings? Thanks

Congrats on the new car soon! That might be a great time to actually try out the different regen levels once you are comfortable on the road. If there's no one around you and you don't expect to be braking, level 0 will let you coast as much as possible. Once you hit some traffic level 3 will give some good deceleration without activating AWD. In and around town, at speeds 15mph or lower iPedal is very convenient. Auto regen will be a bit scary to try out at first but highways with mild traffic is a great place to trial it out. Once you come up on another car slowing down in front of you, that's where you'll see how auto regen is really good. But auto regen has a lot of rules and parameters that I tried to explain in my auto regen series. But probably won't make much sense till you start trying it out yourself. @@CarsJubilee Thanks, been researching them for a year, had one on order here in Colorado over 7 months but then found one out of state coming in about 4-5 weeks and turns out even cheaper out the door. A buddy is flying out with me just to keep me company while my wife stays home with our Golden.

I'm going to watch your videos a few more times to get things straight in my head but I also know I'll have to "feel" the different levels to decide. I'm currently driving a 2020 Hyundai Palisade and I really like using the Adaptive Cruise Control so I'm sure I'll like the features on the I5 as well.

What is the point of those regen levels? If you want to slow down, you brake. And braking also regenerates, even if regen level is set to 0. So isn't regen 0 most efficient?

It's all about customization and flexibility. Auto let's the car decide but you can set it minimum level, essentially letting it do level 0 but still have it increase if it detects cars ahead. Level 0 means almost no regen, even when using the brake pedal so you may end up using your friction brakes a lot which then means you are not taking advantage of regen.

Just got my new ultimate model Ionic 5 and loving it. However, today as I was going down hill my Ionic dropped right out of all levels of Regen on its own. When I tried to re-establish ipedal mode it said Regen conditions not met and refused to turn on. As soon as I hit a flat stretch I was able to engage it again. Is this normal?

That's weird about the downhill disengagement. Did you step on the physical brake pedal? The Regen system won't allow you to change levels while the brake pedal is being used so that might explain the conditions not met but it shouldn't disengage regen. What level did it change to when it disengaged?

@@CarsJubilee It turned Regen completely off and I couldn't re-establish it until I was on level ground again. It seems to be a one off since I've been unable to make it repeat the issue. I think I was braking at.the time because with Regen off I was traveling down the hill faster than I wanted. That helps, thanks for getting back to me. I'm enjoying your videos.

@@glennwilson4246 No. Regen was on and just released on it's own. I haven't had that issue again. And since then I've come to understand that you can't change your regen levels if you are braking. I was going downhill at the time and applying some braking which is why the regen levels wouldn't change for me. So - all is good.

I don't think HDA activated MAX Regen. At least not with all four wheels. What about when you manually activate MAX Regen by holding down the left paddle?

Max regen should be happening with hda as needed. Hda has access to the full Regen system. Since they use a blended system, the car is programmed to use Regen as much as possible before using the friction brakes. You can use Max Regen (left paddle hold) with auto regen, that's the only way to come to a full stop using the paddles in Auto.

The only way I seem to activate Regen on all four wheels is either with MAX Regen by holding the left paddle or in i-Pedal. Is there an AUTO mode that can and will activate the Regen on all four wheels?

@jeffchavez8907 hmm it should be doing Regen to both, are you looking at the driving force distribution gauge? Or look at live energy usage while it's braking to see how high it gets. There's no auto level that will bring you to a stop, I wish there was.

@@CarsJubilee I'm guessing I'm looking at the driving force distribution gauge. The one where you see your tires and how much energy output and input is going to the rear and front wheels. I never see Regen going to the front wheels on Auto, only the rear wheels. The only time I see the Regen going to all four wheels is in i-Pedal or when holding down Max. Although, I haven't really experimented that much with Auto and primarily use the manual Regen modes, so maybe Im just not seeing the situations where it does. I should probably also preface that I have an AWD model, so not sure If the Regen delivers power back to all four wheels in any situation on other models, since the AWD is the only one with dual motors

@jeffchavez8907 ahh okay I got confused because you mentioned HDA. HDA will use max regen when needed. Auto regen cannot access max Regen/ipedal so it cannot use the front motor for regen unless you left paddle hold to manually access max regen.

Wow... all these settings are indeed ' hidden' for me, despite driving the Ioniq 5 since November. I also passed on Auto Regen and iAuto, because it slows down too much when anticipating a traffic light or traffic jam a couple hundred metres/yards away. Will give Auto Regen - Gentle a go. I usually have SCC/HDA engaged and toggle it off if I see something ahead. Regen will be at "0" and I use the flippers to adjust the speed. Feels like "Auto Regen - Gentle" might provide a similar effect.

Ya it should provide a very similar feel to level 0 and then it will auto change the levels itself based on traffic ahead. I guess in a way I'm glad I didn't find out till now. That way I had a chance to really use the regen system manually and enjoy it that way for a time.

Huh? Mine is always blue, no matter what. Mine works down to 0km/h, also, and will auto-stop the car. You won't hit the car in front because of emergency auto braking (unless you turned it off). As to it being complicated, I don't see why. It's pretty simple. I drive mine in max auto with medium deceleration all the time, I don't bother with anything else, and use the paddles when I want to do something special. Way better than iPedal, and the best regen setting of any BEV I've driven.

Very interesting maybe they tuned it differently for different markets. Curious why you are using it in Max Auto? That defeats the purpose of using Auto regen since it cannot change the regen level on its own at Max setting. You have to be in the lower levels of Auto regen for the system to be able to toggle through the levels.

I'm in an SE loaner currently and it's got it. Hold the right paddle (while car is in motion) until you see it change to auto. You can do it while stopped but it will say MAX instead.

They say Germans do overengineering. Koreans hold my beer. Funny enough Stellantis/Fiat 500e did it way better, dynamic Autoregen to full stop by default, with disengaged Auto Cruise Control using the radar, without any buttonmania. With my Ioniq5 i have to remember to break the last meter and engage Autohold or Always engage Auto Cruise & No Manual Break...

Ya it's a very interesting decision for them not to allow auto regen to come to full stops. Does the fiatE have Regen paddles? I've not followed that EV much.

@@CarsJubilee No, it has three Drive modes, Normal/Sherpa with 1pedaldriving and dynamic regen, one without regen for Highway. But the brake utilizes the regen first. I like this concept easy to use und very safe for new users.

All the cars right now are overpriced because they've all been marked over msrp. By many thousands of dollars. That being said the base model and I'm not sure what other models do not come with fast charge. Buyer beware in this it doesn't come with the heat pump. So double-check the car you buy before you drop your money until we hold car dealerships accountable for price gouging customers. The prices will not come down you guys don't seem to realize you're all being taken advantage of

Bought mine at MSRP over a year ago. Currently most are selling at MSRP or even below MSRP because of what Tesla has done. All trims come with the ability to fast charge as they all come with 800v architecture. All 2023 models come with heat pump, for 2022 only AWD had it. So for 2022 models if you want to take advantage of battery preconditioning in cold weather then you need to get AWD. But if you live in year round warm weather climates it won't matter, all trims and all model years would charge the same.
