In this video I use a Hyundai Kona EV to explain how an EV is different to an ICE (internal/combustion engine, petrol/diesel) vehicle, and compare ownership costs.
Covers charging types, home charging risks, differences between ICE and EV, Kona drive review and key safety features.

Analytic video, very informative. People can refer this methomethod to estimate cost when making decision to buy a car.

Refreshingly unbiased EV report, thank you. 50c per kWh I believe is the Tesla rate in Australia and in many big cities off-street parking and home charging are not possible. Also, with solar, most p.v. is received during most work hours when the car will not be home. Even if you can charge from your own solar it has a finite output for the capital investment so if you get 15kWh in a day and use it to charge your car then you are going to get an electricity bill for running your washing machine and all household appliances that use to use the solar output, you can't get 30kWh (15 for car and same for house without doubling your system). Over the last decade electricity prices have risen more than ULP prices by percentage. If you want to go on holidays your EV will have to be filled by paid electricity, your range and available outlets will make holidaying more difficult to plan. Your Kona EV can not tow that camper trailer so renting cabins will add even more cost to EV ownership and reduce flexibility on where you can camp. EVS are really about the environment if you live in a country that makes only clean energy. They are not about saving money. In Australia with its dirty grid most of the environmental argument is quashed. Also in Australia the distances travelled and ways we like to caravan and go bush are not EV suited. No spare wheel in Australia's outback isn't acceptable safety. Even the space saver in Australia is unsatisfactory if you have to drive hundreds of km on one at 80kmh with B doubles overtaking you. Your thoughts?

Thanks Wayne. Your points: Yes solar needs to be stored. This can be in a battery, or something like hyrdo, or just put back into the grid. I'm about to do a video exploring EVs as towcars and 4X4s. Your concerns re range are correct. Kona EVs can and do tow, just not much not far. If an EV is pure coal powered it is by far more environementally friendly than any ICE car. Agree re spares and temps. Spare-saver spares are usually 80/80, 80km/h, for 80km. Take a look at this -> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-12RoTa4qs1E.html

@@L2SFBC thanks for reply. EVS on coal powered electricity are cleaner than ICE yes but read making an EV is 60% less clean in kgs of emissions and that it takes 4 years of clean electric propulsion to break even.

Thank you! I just bought one in Denver and had it shipped to Minneapolis. These are only available in 7 U.S. states presently. Given Minnesota's very cold weather, I'm hoping to not experience a drag on the battery.

Great review. I would like to confirm if this have one pedal driving on the strongest regen. I am interested in buying this vehicle, but have seen some reviews mention i need to hit the paddle shifter to come to a complete stop. So is it one pedal and one shifter ? Or can it all be done with just taking the foot of the pedal. I am talking complete stop here. Your input would be appreciated. I am going for the base model with the convenience package.

ery interesting, we have just bought today a 2021 Series II, highlander with 39,000 kms on the dong. Very nervous start, and got stuck at the lights with tooters behind!! Us oldies need to know what a change it is, especially if you one wants to enact all the bell and whistle's.

Robert, any thoughts on EV's in areas with ice and snow conditions? Is there some form of traction control? Thanks for an informative topic!
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 2 года назад
Hi - in Norway 75% of new cars sold are EVs, so they do work in cold climes but you do lose range because of battery heat requirements. Yes they have traction control, and indeed with IWD (see my other video) traction control is better than ICE cars with mechanical diffs.

Is the ICE the na 2.0?

@@L2SFBC are you sure it's turbo? The 1.6 turbo makes 148kw and about 280nm

Sorry yes, the 1.6 is a turbo, the 2.0 is not (NA as you say)

The price comparison I assume only applies to the region you live in. In many countries in the world there are many more taxes involved when buying a car and also taxes one has to pay every year. Most of those taxes are related to how much CO2 a car produces. If you would compare that price difference EV vs. ICE vehicle including some of those taxes, then the scales will very quickly go to the other side. Some countries even give some discount on purchase price which makes it really no brainer option to get an EV if usage scenario is compatible with how EVs work, e.g. charging, range, etc.

Yes, the government plays a huge part which is why Norway has such a high take-up rate. And after a while, EVs become the norm.

I’m in Canada, I got $5000.00 rebate from the government on my Kona EV plus $500 from my dealer for being a repeat customer. 0% financing and a reduction in my insurance. In warm weather I’m getting about 475 klms per charge and charge at home. My charger cost me $500 total to install and costs about $25 a month. No brainer as far as I’m concerned plus I’m helping the planet.

Please do a review on a Tesla Model 3 Robert- the car is miles ahead of the Kona in virtually every way, but especially driving dynamics and features. We extensively test drove a Kona, were terribly disappointed, and were immediately convinced to wait for the Model 3, best decision we ever made. (The Kona had - amongst other things - the worst torque steer I’ve ever experienced, and absolute rubbish tyres.)
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 2 года назад
Yes, I've driven Teslas and agree they are the best EVs at present for handling, performance, intelligent routing and range. The tyres are indeed bad but it really needs a limited-slip diff. Didn't notice any torque steer. EV tyres tend to be low-rolling-resistance, and that comes at the expense of grip.

@@L2SFBC I drove it quite hard in damp conditions, with uneven bitumen and patches of wet and dry. Under hard acceleration the torque steer nearly ripped the wheel out of my hands, really shocked me. I’ve driven some pretty gutsy FWD cars and never experienced anything remotely like it.

Hi. From Portugal. In my family que have 4 model 3 LR and 3 konas . Kona as some good points ...is the best in price -range- eficiêncy . The problem you mention is because early tires ( my mim car) come with non Michelin tires..that issue desapeare with. Kona as same Range in some trips as LR..and is more practical on bad roads as in other items. For me and untill now ...still the very best ..range-price-practical ...car Over any other Ev car. Tesla is good ..yes ..but expensive
