I think you are too modest with your skill. It's not just luck that leads to a quick diagnosis. As with many fields, there are so many intangibles that come along with diagnostic work, like little details in how something sounds, or when the fuse blows. A lot also comes from experience and, with wire shorts, knowing what places are vulnerable or likely to be problems (like spots where the harness turns a tight corner or passes near an edge). Your skill leads to a quick and accurate diagnosis, not luck. Keep up the good work! This industry needs more technicians like you.

Hey Eric, after watching you use your Astro SL40 light every day and how well it appears to perform for you I sprung for one. I'm sure its the most I've ever spent for a small work light but with its features, your comments and the amount of light it puts out, I figured it would be worth it for my old eyes. Got it today and although I wish it was US made, at least it's Taiwan made and not China. It is every bit the quality piece I was expecting and plenty of light for even the "old classic reacharound."

Looks like all the smoke got let out of those wires there! The smoke-holding jacket was GONE. :D I miss that hot front that came through a few days ago - hit 96° over here. I spent a couple years in Phoenix, so I feel right at home in the heat, so long as the dew point is a ways below 70°. I'm out there working in front of the barn with black pants and a black t-shirt, lol. Everyone stops and asks if I'm insane ... :D 46° out there now, and drizzling. Not happy about that! Life in the Northeast - whaddya gonna do ... Big Nasty arrived the other day, along with my Ajax hammers! Thing is NUTS! The speed at which it hammers is alot slower ... but WOW does she pack a punch! THANKS for clueing us in on that gem - I'll be using that one alot around here. :)

Hi Eric I have the same fuse saver tool I find that the breaker is way more resilient to blow than the fuse it had in the original circuits sometimes it's good but sometimes not what I do sometimes I put a breaker 5 amp less than the original fuse but in your case I bet that if you were diagnosing with the fuse in I bet that you would've had a hard time playing with the wires because the fuse would of blown very quickly it's amazing how many items are supplied power form that one 10 amp fuse.

He's right though. If he can do it, you can do it. You just need to have the data on hand. If you can't find that data for free, then you are stuck at an obstacle. You can get over the obstacle by paying money for the data of course and knowledge is power. Basically, you can both do it but Mr.O Has the power in his "pocket" (laptop) and that's what makes it so quick and easy for him. Technically (for this job) he didn't need any fancy tools. Just a wiring diagram and following the wires. It's not always that obvious but you still CAN find the problem with enough time on your hand. So in the end, you can both do it but Eric can do it faster, at the expense of having to pay a subscription to various vehicle databases.

True, sometimes so easy miss the obvious. usual cause is poor working practice when looking for faults or time restraints and jumping to conclusions rather than spending time on visuals & getting data . Looks like the whole shop was a giant toolbox lol, so handy having tools lying on floor right next to you lol ... Did make that one look too easy though . Would assume your 10amp breaker bit more resilient than real fuse looking at those spikes .

I’ve used a Telcom tool we call a breakdown. It works perfectly when you have a solid short between two primary wire conductors. If your second conductor is the chassis (short to ground) it doesn’t work. The breakdown tool welds the short and then the tone will only travel from the tool to the short and not beyond the short. This is used in cables with hundreds of conductors and is awesome when your affected circuit is miles long. You must remove the “component” at the far end (the customer house In Telcom) then you GIVE HER THE BEANS!!! Weld that short with high voltage and amperage, estimate the distance in ohms to feet, and follow your pickup coil right to it. This would be risky in an automotive application. But hey follow the smoke 😂 I feel like your power-probe tool may have similar limitations and maybe works well if you can isolate two individual wires that are solidly shorted together (less than 10ohms) and connect the two leads to them. I do not recommend applying the weld it together part on a car though 😂

When one gets a low 'Whoa' and or 'Oh!' from Eric midway through the video, one guesses that he has the problem's rough location. Wow this guy is fast, for some one more thorough than lucky.

I think Hyundai uses sub par materials, rotting control arms, sub-frame, wiring harness, twisted camshaft. i'v seen this a few times with the crankshaft sensor, but it wasn't blowing the fuse, just stalling. good find, great vid.....

As usual, another great video. Can you tell me the brand name and part number for the circuit breaker tool? Thanks.

great video once again and good diag skills. I enjoy watching SMA a bit more than scannerdanner because unlike Eric O , scannerdanner does not have "im wrong", "i stuffed up" , " I shouldn't have done that" , "what I should have done instead" in his vocab. ScannerDanner is too perfect. A self-proclaimed deity diag dog. too much for me.
