I’m 5 Years Cancer-Free: What I’ve Learned (Top Tips for Other Patients) | Stephanie’s Story

It’s been 5 years since I was told I was NED or No Evidence of Disease with my cancer and to celebrate that (also as part of Blood Cancer Awareness Month), I’ve put together a very personal sort of video diary with my top lessons/tips learned since the non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis (diffuse large b-cell lymphoma, specifically primary mediastinal, with double expressor). My hope is that my documented ups and downs will resonate with some of you out there and be something helpful to you at the time you watch it.
I’m grateful I’ve been able to meet and befriend such incredible people throughout building The Patient Story, and to all of you who’ve left feedback on the impact and what you’d like to see more. While I can’t get back to everyone (it’s so busy I’m skipping meals - not good haha), I want to express my thanks for every single comment.
I hope you consider joining our free, members-only community (www.thepatientstory.com/join) as we’re trying to build a place that is moderated, curated and rich with gold content for cancer patients, care partners, and caregivers everywhere. Thank you for sharing your story. You just showed me that life is worth living. There is life after cancer. I’m battling colon cancer at this time and preparing myself to get my fist chemotherapy, after a Laparoscopic-assisted colectomy surgery… Keep encouraging us to do our best! Congratulations!🤗

So happy to see this new video which shows you healthy and well looking. The CoVID didn’t keep you down long I hope. I see the happy light back in your eyes. I’m a breast cancer survivor myself who perhaps is hesitant to celebrate too much. You have put meaning for me into those feelings of the heaviness of ‘survivorship’. I am so blessed to have made that walk across hot coals by way of two small surgeries, five years of Tamoxifen, and thirty radiation treatments. That treatment ended in August 2001. My naïveté bubble was popped on the day of my ‘last’ visit to the Cancer Center, the ending of the weekly loving care I received from my team as well as that being the day I learned that breast cancer has a tendency to travel with bowel, bladder, and lung cancer. Just acknowledging that ‘things are what they are’, regardless of our approval, we were given the most miraculous gift of life in these bodies; a tool for our spirits to house and applaud life, even the insignificant negative fluff. We have all that we need to walk as warriors against cancer or anything else that poses as the harbinger of death. It is life in love that is eternal not in the current vessel or fear of something. People who have passed into the ether are with us now, bound by our love for them. It is the same love that smothers my fear about the ‘next shoe dropping’, fighting cancer again. If love can do all that then love is all I need.
@ThePatientStory
@ThePatientStory Год назад
Caren, wow. Your words are so powerful and resonated deeply with me. I’m so glad you have been done with treatment and also understand the heavy feeling of survivorship. I’m going to save your words somewhere. We are trying to open up a section for writing on our site for people like you who have a gift with words. If that sounds interesting to you, please email me stephanie@thepatientstory.com. ❤️

Stephanie: Wow. Just wow. Took me a bit to let the power and grace of your story settle in my thoughts so I could speak to it. First of all, thank you for this channel and the energy you put out into the world. I hope it comes back to you many, many times over in gratitude and support from all of the people you have helped. I could go on and on, but I just want to say that I am so sorry for your pain at the loss of those you have befriended and gotten to know. I hope you know we are all of us thinking of you and hoping we can somehow, someway, help with this pain by telling you how much you have helped with ours by giving us a voice and a face, when cancer was slowly erasing us from ourselves. Survivorship can be such a heavy burden, but oddly, I have found that it is lighter when you carry someone on your back, be it a stressed caregiver, or a friend or coworker who has just gotten a diagnosis themselves. This you have shown the world. Because I did not die right away, I lived to have my oldest son tell me right before he went off to college that he was looking forward to being friends with me when he is an adult, and my youngest son tell me that he sees much of my kindness in him, and he thinks it is a good thing. These are the moments that make the darkness retreat. I too am guilty that so many of my co-survivors suffer and pass. I have come to the conclusion that my life and my happiness serves as a tribute to them, and living, I mean, truly living with connection and perspective and purpose, is the biggest thumb I can jab into cancer's eye. May all of your days be filled with peace and healing. Luis

18 months and I have nothing. Aussie. I am so frustrated. Lost weight. That's fine, as I was overweight anyway. But sick of pain and sick of feeling ill. I just want to know what's wrong. Why is it taking so long to find answers. We even thought of selling our home so I could get help. On an air mattress for over 4 months now. In bed most of the time. I'm sorry to cry on your shoulder, but I only have a few friends to talk with. My husband is amazing and so tired with having to care for me. I try not to talk too much now. I try to think of the good things in my day now to keep things lighter. But I'm tired...next week I finally get my second endoscopy with biopsies...through the Hepatabiliary clinic. I've had a 3cm tumor in my pacreas for over 20yrs. It's slow growing and not cancer. My last endo/biop was 29th Dec 2022. If nothing shows this time they're dropping me. Such a wait. Starting next week in Gastro Clinic next week too. It's all happened too slow...😢 Thank you for being here for all of us!!!! I watch your videos. Kimmie🥰💜😘
