The ARB lid is awesome. For the problem you described....just pop that sucker right off and when you're done....right back on.. They thought of everything.

One way to speed up the initial fridge cool down process is to make sure to refrigerate / freeze your drinks and other items prior to loading your fridge/freezer.

Another great video thank you! We just purchased an ice cold 64 quart fridge and absolutely love it it is large and not something you want to haul back-and-forth to your house but it is excellent because it has the dual doors and either compartment can be the freezer or refrigerator or both. Lots of flexibility! It also has the baskets for each compartment which makes it really easy to get food in and out. Thanks again this really helped confirm that we didn’t buy too large of fridge…

I bought the 50 qt with the slide and cover from the owner of a Jeep only shop after he bought the 82 qt. $250 for everything!!! I’ve had it for 3 years and just plugged it in a few days ago. I need to figure out a solution for mounting the slide without drilling holes in the floor of my LJ. Great video. Thanks

Great vid Chow! Just got my first fridge recently... IceCo JP40... wanted smallest dimension with usable space to use between the LX470 and other cars (Odyssey, etc). Awesome for short trips with fam.... or solo, multi day trips. Might upgrade to the taller one though in the future, for a little more space, but love the small footprint it has. Friends swear by Dual zone fridges too... I’m just not ready for that yet (size and weight).

The 82Qt is a beast, I bought the Blue Classic 82Qt 2 years ago and it is a bottomless pit, It really hold some gear, Set it to -12*c so you can store frozen foods and the stuff in the the very Top and the Dairy area will stay just above freezing so it works just like a proper Duel Zone, Packed like this it can hold a couple of months worth of food for a couple of people.

I feel like it gets colder faster than my 63. I did see a on the label that it has a slightly higher capacity for Freon too 🤷🏻‍♂️

So I'm just unsure if these fridges need to be plugged in constantly to a 12-volt source and how bad they would draw down say if you had it hooked onto a diesel with two batteries on it if I would need to start my truck every day to charge batterys or if I would need to start my truck every other day if I was four wheeling and camping out of a base camp been thinking about getting one not sure how they work

I have the 50qt ARB wired to the battery. No problems keeping it cold. As far as space goes, it does require a bit of planning if there isn't room for all of your beverages. Unlike a regular cooler full of ice and melted water, the ARB is like a regular refrigerator and won't cool a beverage down quickly. So when I start off with lots of food I just have to be mindful to rotate new drinks in as I take one out. I usually put then in the corners and this helps cool them down a bit quicker.

Depends on a lot of variables. Temp setting, outside temp, how much stuff inside. Usually with my dual battery setup I have no issues leaving it on all weekend long. However, I usually drive a bit to different campsites every night. Hope that helps

Off roading since 1970's, still using my old Coleman ice chest, put it inside a insulated bag. I've changed my diet, no longer drinking alcohol and keep it very minimal and I don't buy ice, I freeze a good portion of bottles and good to go on long trips.

I've had the Classic 50 qt for about 4 years, and I have about the same reactions to it as Chowcares: it works great, but every time I go somewhere with it, I wish it was bigger. When I bought it, I was driving a Subaru Outback, and all I could find locally was the 50 qt model - no one had the 82 qt in stock or I would have bought it. But I have since sold the Outback and downsized to a Prius Prime ($6.00/gallon gas forced that decision), and I am now in a situation where I'm glad I didn't get the 82qt model, as I am not sure if it would even fit through the rear doors into the Prius back seat (even my 50 qt won't fit under the hatchback at all, being too tall). Being able to pull the lid out of the hinges without having to raise it all the way is a key feature if you are going to use a fridge in a small hatchback car like a Prius. Even in a minivan or Rav4/CRV sized compact SUV, I don't think you could swing the lid all the way upright. I've run into the same problem as Chowcares regarding power supply: the compressor in these fridges is a Danfoss BD35F piston compressor, and while it's average current power draw is about 60 watts (5 amps at 12 volts DC), for about 1/10 second at every restart, it draws a fairly large "starting surge" current of about 10 amps. This isn't enough to blow the fuse in the 12 volt Accessory circuit in most cars (these are usually 15 or 20 amp fuses), but if you use an extension cord to supply power to the fridge, and it is smaller than 12 gauge, or longer than 6 feet, the voltage drop might be enough to not allow the compressor to start. All induction motors experience this higher inrush surge current and momentary voltage drop, which in some kinds of motors can be mitigated with a "starter capacitor" to supply a fast jolt of current to help the rotor start. There is a really cool video here on RU-vid that shows the internal parts of a Danfoss BD35F compressor with the housing cut away, showing the motor and compressor "guts" clearly. The compressor is a single piston driven through a connecting rod from a counterweighted crankshaft. Reed valves in the cylinder head prevent backflow of the R-134a refrigerant gas. It's a very simple, and elegant design, and since all the moving parts are bathed in PAG oil mixed with the R134a, they are continuously lubricated, and these compressors can last many years. And they don't cost much to replace if they ever do wear out, about $250 for a complete new one with a controller module. The video is at [ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O-TeM4NtjDE.html] .

Can anyone help with this technical question? I have a 60L ARB fridge, I've had it for 8 years and love it. I have a question that I cannot find an answer to. It has to do with the LEDs on the control panel. Red means a low battery or a fault, green means the compressor is on, and yellow means fridge has reached the desired temperature, but what is happening when there are NO LEDs on? (just the digital temp display). TIA!

Hi Chow. Wondering if you or any of your subscribers know if it's possible to get a new Master or Valet key for a '99 100 series, WITHOUT a current master key. Dealer is telling me they cannot program, even a valet key, without the original. That the entire ECM needs to be replaced. All I have for our LC is just the one valet key. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

You need to get someone other than the stealer to reflash your ecu. Once that's done all previous keys are erased and you can program new ones.

I have an ‘02 LX that came with only a valet key and called a couple local locksmiths. I found one who was able to provide a new master key and we programmed it so it works like factory. Dealer wanted $400, locksmith was $250 (one new master/programming).

I have a 50QT and the elements 63Qt with low profile sliders so it fits under my tonneau cover on my truck. Can't say anything bad about them. I have a secondary battery with a dc to dc charger which has the option to plug in a solar panel. I have a solar blanket I plug in keeps the battery fully charge during the day, then at night the battery runs both. Then the next day solar blanket charges up the battery and runs both refrigerators. You can sell your smaller unit and get some decent money but you might want to keep the smaller one just in case you want to go on a day trip somewhere.

Nice video when your stuff is small go bigger!
@JimOltman
@JimOltman 3 года назад
There is a solution. ARB sells a "Drawer Fridge Cable Guide". That would solve the issue of cable pinch. Also, I would think that cooling a few beers at a time would be ideal. Keep the rest warm. When you take one out, put in a warm one. On the second, pull out the coldest, replace with warm. Continue until desired results are achieved.

I tend to stay around 60L. Most of my trips are for 3-4 days at most. That volume works perfectly fine for beer (LOL) and enough "cold" food. Most of my camp kitchen stuff is dry goods and non-refrigerated items so I need relatively little space in the fridge for actual food. But, I'm generally by myself or with another person at most. If you have a family, I'd absolutely go bigger and I'd go dual-zone if kids are involved so you can keep icecream, popsicles and other frozen goodies. As for the power cord issue, I simply took a very small cable organizing velcro strap and leash the power cord to the 3rd row "oh crap" handle on the roof. It keep the cord suspended and it doesn't catch on anything when sliding the fridge in and out of the rig. If you happen to store stuff on that side of the fridge, I'd honestly just glue on a small clip to the highest point on fridge below the lid (maybe 8-10 inches from the rear) and route the cord up thru it. That would theoretically prevent the cord from catching. Anyway, great video as always.
