Dear Roman, thank you so much for the video. In my humble opinion, this was your most ... (how should I say it ...) "mature" one. It is full of substance and based on serveral years years of Ups and Downs in your own career. One again: It is a huge pleasure to follow your path ...

I am a hobby landscape photographer, and I never had any interest in street photography. However, when I started watching your channel, especially your great work, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and photograph with human beings nearby😱😂. Due to my mobility issues I find it hard to do street photography, but I bought myself a year's ticket of a open air museum which I can tackle with wheely and feet combined. I know it's not street photography, but still, for me it's a huge step. I remember you talked about being "shy" in street photography, that was inspiring. I also blame you for the significant drop of GAS, a very new and bewildering experience for me 😂.

I think the important part is just getting out and shooting... it does not matter the genre, just start taking a camera wherever you go - and from there you expand into what you like...

To your point about shooting in the major cities- I’m an okay/mediocre photographer living in the greater NYC area. I definitely find it easier to shoot in the city as opposed to my hometown, BUT I find it to be a really great challenge to shoot in my hometown, where there are less obvious things to photograph. It’s been fun when I actually take the camera out

I find it really hard where I live as it’s a small town and not a great deal of aesthetically pleasing buildings either! People tend to ignore you more in cities with a camera too so that also helps. I usually get the train into the closest city

I think regarding gear and phones people should think about if they really need the Ultra or Max version of their phone for €1300 or if a €500 phone does the same job, leaving €800 as a starting budget for a camera which will outlast and outperform the flagship phone for years. I say this because phone manufacturers ran out of ideas the past couple of years and just keep adding lenses to their flagship phones as the big feature next to a slightly bigger battery which gets eaten by the bigger screen anyway. If you were to take the camera combined with a lesser phone, you get a better experience all around, and I found while travelling my phone battery isn't emptying so quickly because the picture and video part is done by my camera now, leaving the phone battery for directions, music, and so on.

Your RU-vid channel is in my photography life since day 1! It is because of you that I bought my Fuji and although I developed a quite different street photography style from yours, you are always a big source of inspiration for me. Your videos always leave me something good to think about! Thanks 🙏

I agree that ALL photographers should try shooting Street at least once before deciding if it's something they'd like to do more regularly or not. I'm travelling down to London tomorrow to take part in the London 24 in 24 event. There are possibly up to 75 people attending the 24 hour photo shoot starting midday tomorrow through to midday Sunday. It's not the 1st time I've taken part although this year it's not an official Photo 24 event

Roman stay blessed and spirited and keep doing what you love. I have just finished my first trip to Japan this Sunday just gone I do alot of street photography with my Nikon D5500. I use the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-F4 and Tamron 18-200mm alongside the Nikon 85mm F1.8, Youngnou 50mm, Youngnou 35mm, Nikon 50mm F1.4 and Nikon 85mm F1.8. All these lenses have added to my street photography journey.

Great video! Small thought/addition: there's no reason why people should restrict themselves to any particular genre. Try out what draws your attention and, with time, you will find your sweet spot. In the meanwhile shoot those streets! Congrats on your great and inspiring channel!

Great thoughts, Roman! I have found street does encourage quick thinking. I'm primarily interested in landscape photography and I do slow down while doing it. The golden and blue hours are what come to mind in this genre but I have found that you can take great photos in any weather or lighting conditions just like street. Rain or sunshine there's always something intreresting. Cheers!

I couldn't agree more. My work is primarily road race (criterium) cycling photography, and I often use street photography to keep my skills sharp and test out new techniques in between races. Photography is like any skill in that if you don't keep practicing and training, you'll start to lose that edge.

Hello Roman, I follow your channel for a while now and I love the way you are doing street photografy. This video is probably the most important for beginners like me because it encourages to go outside and keep on learning. Your level of photografy is hard to reach but inspiring.

I had a similar situation, I love landscape photography but it’s tricky to practice it as frequently as street. I definitely agree with you, street photography gets you out shooting, getting comfortable with your camera and slowly building core skills overtime. Those skills can then be fed back into any other sub genre of photography
@snapsbyfox

yeah, I love landscape and being in nature. However it's simply not as accessible as big cities at least without a car.

One key point about photography is taking your camera with you when you go out. As far as the minimal amount of gear needed, street photography is about as minimal as it gets plus you can do it just by walking out your door. Other genres tend to require more gear that you have take with you when you go out.

It was a trip to India that first hooked me on street photography. I've never been to a more visually interesting place in my life. Coming from years of shooting landscapes, the amount of outright fakery in that genre has really turned me off to it. Street is different. Every scene is different from hour to hour and day to day. A vibrant city presents endless opportunities.

Well done! Your ability to organize thoughts into an understandable and useful teaching experience is second to none. One thing I found as a beginner is that using a phone for street photography was much less intimidating. It's probably because phone camera use is so wide-spread that nobody really gives you a second look while you're shooting. That can be helpful in allow you to focus on finding subjects. And, since you don't have to really mess with any settings, you can focus on composition. Thanks again for a high quality learning experience!

I did the same thing for a couple of trips to London. I just whizzed around using my iPhone which was great for someone that was scared of pointing a camera at people or even just using a camera with the thought of people watching me. The last trip seen me using my phone for the first day but a penny dropped, I thought I looked a lot more out of the ordinary, taking shots of abstract objects etc with the phone than I did with my cheap Olympus camera. The second and third day seen me push myself with the only and just a 50mm prime. I don’t know if it’s true but I think people seen me as someone more serious and there was more reason for me to be photographing. It was a guy on the street that made me change the way I looked at it. With a leica in hand and one over his shoulder, he was composing a shot of a kerb. I thought that was more normal than me doing the same with an iPhone. It also had a reverse psychology and I was taking more photos with the Olympus.

That all makes sense. Me, I just take whatever genre is there. Sometimes it's street, architecture, landscape, the occasional big horn sheep, etc. As you indicate, being anywhere doing anything is more interesting when you're looking for compositions. I take my gear to the grocery store every week, just in case.

Excellent, authentic and to-the-point video. Thank you Roman, I love your work and approach to photography. I would really be interested in listening to you explain in detail the thought process you go through in taking a photo. I've tried street photography a few times and although I see things that are interesting (or at least I think they are interesting when I see them) as I walk (though I'm definitely missing a lot, I'm sure) and take lots of shots, they don't translate into interesting photos when I get back home and go through them. Aside from the obvious reason that I suck at it still and need more practice, I'm wondering: is it the subject? Is it the composition? Is it the light? (probably all of the above). How does one decide when all those things are interesting and optimal? (I'm pretty sure my gear/settings are okay). You mentioned that much of what you do is now instinctive, but I think many would learn a lot from a description of your thought process. Cheers!

I would say, in my limited experience, that 'Street Photography' is the broadest form of photography and therefore the least limiting and may well be the corner stone of many great photographers. The downside of 'Street' is the luck factor which is obviously much less important with more niche styles of photography. On a negative note, I think 'Street' lends it's self more to 'spray-n-pray' than other styles and the success rate may also be much lower. Yes, some great images will be captured if people take this route but the hit rate may be much lower than many suggest although I suppose it depends on how you define a good image?
@snapsbyfox
@snapsbyfox 8 дней назад
For me the luck factor is my favourite. I would absolutely hate to plan a shot using a ton of tools, arrive and execute exactly how I planned it. Might as well use AI. The luck is bit is what keeps me going out every single time.
