Poor guy is suppressing some serious stage fright. You know it’s bad when you start to sound like you have dentures in because your mouth gets so dry. Having a nightmare in a £25k suit. Makes him all the more likeable but that’s stage fright/skirting near a panic attack and I really feel for him!

Fincher and Pitt have terrific chemistry together and produce great work together .

He pushes through it and shows the vulnerability that makes Him one of the greatest actors of a generation. Brad is an icon and an inspiration on and off the screen. He's what a Man should be. Kind, Graceful and Funny. Grateful to have witnessed this tonight.

Brad Pitt and audience were both nervous. The audience were in shock seeing such a great actor showing up and they just wanted to look at him and live the moment without caring much about what he meant and the jokes he was making. On the other hand this was not something Brad was expecting because as a natural human we all expect some engagement and laughter when we crack jokes. Still, Brad's skills safely got him out and the audience seem pleased too. Happy ending :)

Pitt likes Finsher a lot. So he wanted to say a beautiful speech, therefore he read a written one, he didn’t improvise. And the emotions came in the way of his reading. These things happen. It’s ok. There are worse things in a lifetime. We still like him for his sincerity in his work.

Nice. Either French people don't feel the compulsion to laugh out loud obnoxiously at every statement because they are polite and respectful of the speakers, or they just don't understand English fluently enough to get Brad's jokes. Either way, David deserves this and many other honors.

A lot of comments discussing Brad's nervousness. I thi k it's as a result of the crowd not laughing. But THAT'S as a result of a large percentage of the audience having French as their primary language. It doesn't mean they cannot communicate in English, but I think that maybe they just didn't have a strong enough command of the English language to catch the subtlety of his jokes.

Man I feel bad for Brad he had a crowd with a language barrier and he needed water in the middle when every word sounded like an “Slurred Run-on S”. Great speech at the end.

Terrible crowd. I feel like they were clapping for themselves because they were at an event with Brad Pitt. I film school in 2002, I chose my final assignment to be about the movie Se7en. I must've watched the movie 30 times over creating an original movie trailer, storyboards, writing a synopsis for many scenes, etc. - I seriously don't know how Fincher didn't become mentally ill after spending so much time immersed in that sick world he created. He really is a genius.

I love Pitt, and he did nothing wrong - except his jokes are in English and this award show honoring director David Fincher was held in France. You can imagine what it would be like having a French actor telling jokes in French at the US held Oscars. This clip does not make that clear, but that’s why Pitt is having such a rough time. I think he’s actually at least partially fluent in French, as well - ironically.

I really like Brad , he has a very down to earth way about him. Some stars think they are invincible but I believe Brad knows his career in the movie business changed his life forever and believe he is so grateful for given a chance to live his,dream and for the life he lives.

Going for laughs when the audience doesn’t understand what you’re saying is a recipe for disaster. He got no feedback, and it clearly triggered a trauma response. He seems like he’s in the midst of an anxiety attack. I suppose one could argue that he shouldn’t have been so arrogant as to deliver such a complex speech in English to a French audience. However, that is countered by the ridiculous reverence the entire French film industry has for Hollywood stars over their own stars. That initial welcome was so preposterously fawning! It’s always been like that in France. They had to introduce laws to protect their own language by imposing quotas in cinemas and on the radio because they were so enamored of all things American. Silly really. I much prefer French cinema, and have always loved popular French music too.
