At best, a sucker is a good muskie bait. At worst, it’s a fish most people don’t
even deem worthy of a nightcrawler. But Tyler Winter sees things differently.
While the rest of us stress over prime real estate for glam species like
walleye, bass, trout, Tyler enjoys equally hard fights in beautiful,
unpressured sucker spots across Minnesota. Joe Cermele joins him to figure
out if he’s the sucker for flying out to target these lowly river dwellers, or if
everyone else is a sucker for overlooking these tenacious native fish.

God I love Joe and B-Side SO MUCH. Probably the only current fishing show that makes an actual effort to chase the fish that other fishing shows don't care to. Every single time it's a totally unique trip and I'm obsessed.

Well played, B-Siders. Appreciate the respect for the native fish. I accidentally found a few spots to catch them on spey in Oregon rivers, big swings, big current, big awesome healthy native fish. Love it.

Tyler has been bringing light to natives for years! Lifelisters like myself know him. Targeting natives is the best. There are no trash fish, only trash anglers.

Big thing for me is if I'm going fishing for food I want healthy fish. Nearly every sucker I've caught (especially in summer heat) has had lumps or rashes or parasites. If I catch one this spring I'll probably keep it to see what it's like. Or if I actually catch something next time on the ice 🤦‍♂️

It would drive my dad nuts when I was a kid and we were at our local small mouth river when I was constantly trying to catch the red horses lol! But I could see them! And they were WAY harder to catch! So when I would finally hook one I had such a sense of accomplishment. Never understood back then why people would literally step over a fish to try to catch a fish and I still don’t haha. As far as my dad’s perspective went, we were fishing for our dinner and they were no good to eat, so that was understandable but I always wondered what they tasted like. It’s so refreshing to see shows like this highlighting the misfits of our aquatic world! Keep it up! To quote Blue Oyster Cult “Time to play B sides”!

Very nice! It does remind me of the quest for flyfishing for barbel on our streams in Western Europe, by myself my mates and flyfishing colleagues. It took some time to crack the fly code for them, but when we did start hooking them we never looked back. Hopefully this will develop into a well managed and protected fishery.

I am originally from Europe, and after moving to Canada I was surprised to learn that local anglers ignore this fish and often think it’s a trash fish or an invasive carp. I caught a few suckers using euro nymphing technique and really enjoyed the fight they put. A lot of fun. I called the American barbels as they are rather similar: feeding, body shape, enormous strength

In the South we call redhorse the Salmon of the South. It’s said Cherokee Indians would trade ten trout for one redhorse. There’s a confluence of two big rivers I fish in the NC Mtns where you can still see the remnants of Indian fish camps lining the confluence and their fish traps in the rivers.

I inherited a set of S&P shakers that are in the shape and colour of red-horse suckers. Couldn't have been happier when I asked if I could have those babies and the mother-in-law said yes. She said she knew I'd want them because she thought they looked like rainbow trout. I was actually more interested in them because the short-heads are native to my home river, the Nith, in SW Ontario.

Two type of redhorse spawn in the creeks on my farm. They start trickling up in mid February and it peaks with huge biomasses of redhorse in the creeks. It’s an incredible sight. There’ll be so many redhorse it looks like you could walk across the creeks on their backs.

Redhorse will migrate over 10 miles to find a good spawning site. When they all show up in one spot it looks like a lot. Those streams often have above average bass fishing because smallmouth get fat on sucker fingerlings.

@Tyler Winter My place is 13 miles above the lake by the way the crow flies and that lake has incredible fishing of many species. Our state record freshwater striper came out of that lake. It doesn’t produce a lot of stripers but the ones it does produce are huge. State DNR calls the lake their golden child.

Having grown up fishing creeks in Southern WV I love chasing suckers, nightcrawlers, corn, and on occasion bucktail jigs have brought more than I could begin to guess to the bank. I honestly don't know what sucker species they were but they pull better than most trout and the biggest we caught were well over 20 inches and the heaviest we ever weighed tipped the scale at just over 8 pounds

I accidentally catch them with a carolina rigged nightcrawler on a 5/0 octopus circle hook fairly commonly. That being said that same set up has in my same spot catches large channel cats, goldeye/mooneye, red horse, carp, pike, small mouth bass, bullheads, snapping turtles, and believe it or not a couple zebra mussels and a couple clams larger than my hand.. Seeing mussels and clams clamped on a hook voluntarily just seems so strange.

I've caught more redhorse than I can count deadsticking for smallies on the Mississippi in central MN. I still won't be thrilled to catch them but maybe I'll have a bit more appreciation for them. I tell you though, you're gonna wear out your welcome if you keep talking about walleye like that! And the lazy fight of a redhorse can't even remotely match the fun of a big bluegill, get out of town! :-P
@Hucho33
@Hucho33 2 года назад
Thanks. All I really ask is that people don't hate them. And seriously, big smalllies and redhorse go together like peanut butter and jelly. In clear water you can watch bass following redhorse looking for crayfish the suckers scare out.
@keithkempenich6401
@keithkempenich6401 2 года назад
@@Hucho33 Naw, I won't hate on them anymore. Heck, might even try frying one up next time I get one. But between you and I, the stretch below the St. Cloud dam and Clearwater has some monster redhorse. Water isn't clear enough to see them, but a nightcrawler on a lindy rig on the bottom, on the edge of the current will land you some quality fish.
