IDAHO FALLS - An Idaho Falls man says he is “not a monster” despite leaving a victim scarred from abuse that was stopped because a dollar store employee called for help.
Dressed in a brown jail jumpsuit, 36-year-old Kristopher Darrel Lloyd Griffey walked into a Bonneville County Courtroom Monday afternoon for his sentencing. Griffey pleaded guilty in March to felony domestic battery inflicting traumatic injury and felony attempted strangulation stemming from a terrifying string of events last August.
“I’m not a monster,” Griffey said before he received his sentence. “I told (the victim) that day I was more than willing to face this and I’m telling you right now I’m more than willing to face this.”
Police reports show Griffey was arrested after several 911 calls were made and the victim passed a note to a Dollar Tree cashier asking for help. Officers learned Griffey abused the woman several times over a single weekend that resulted in her going to a local hospital with a broken nose.
During the weekend, the victim’s young child witnessed the abuse. Griffey reportedly said, “Say goodbye to mommy because it would be the last time he sees her,” according to court documents. The abuse and threats by Griffey included how he would take her to the hills where she would never be found.
Court documents described in graphic detail the threats of torture and death made to the victim. Griffey also reportedly told the victim he would end not only her life but also the lives of her family members.
Eventually, a Dollar Tree employee on 17th Street called 911 saying a woman passed a note to a cashier saying, “Call the police, I’m in danger,” along with her address. Idaho Falls Police officers learned the woman was a domestic violence victim they had been trying to reach.
“I could not understand why I was treated this way by somebody who made me believe he loved me,” the victim said as tears fell onto her written victim impact statement. “I could not understand what I could have possibly done to have my son and I both deserve to have these things done to us.”
The victim described the terror she experienced and the lasting mental effect the abuse had on her. She said her young son, who witnessed the abuse, has been in trouble at school for violently hurting others, saying, “Kris said that is how to be a man.”
Bonneville County Deputy Prosecutor Russell Spencer asked District Judge Dane H. Watkins Jr. to give Griffey a total of two to 12 years in prison. Spencer explained Griffey’s extensive criminal history, including a felony attempted strangulation case with another victim in Bannock County. Griffey was on parole at the time of the new domestic violence charges.
Public Defender Rocky Wixom did not oppose the fact that Griffey should go to prison but instead asked the minimum term be one year behind bars. Wixom specifically argued that the victim’s credibility should be considered, specifically mentioning her use of methamphetamine.
“I’m going to do everything I can to make this right,” Griffey said. “There is no justification. It doesn’t matter what she said or what really happened. The fact is I did these actions. I’m responsible for my actions. I made a choice.”
Watkins called Griffey’s actions “terrorizing.”
“There was physical harm and there was mental harm,” Watkins said. “In fact, the court would describe it as mental terror. The threats that were made on this day are appalling. They were a threat then and they’re a threat now. It is a living nightmare to live through something like that.”
With concern for protecting others and Griffey’s failures in previous criminal cases, Watkins sentenced Griffey to a total of three to 13 years in prison. He was also ordered to pay $2,000 in fines.
“I too feel the weight of this sentence because it is a dramatic thing that we’re discussing,” Watkins said.

Abusers NEVER TRULY PAY FOR THE DAMAGE THEY DO. I am a survivor. I know my abuser will never pay to equal the damage he did to my life. He took my life anyway... he did not have drugs or alcohol as an excuse. It was all him and his sick and twisted control. Sadistic and tormenting. He will never leave my head. He will never leave my heart and never leave my nightmares. He is out there somewhere and me and my sons will never have a restful night until he is.gone forever. I think this as$h#le triggered me because I just want to scream right now.

"This man had seven prior incidents" seems like a statement, not a question, so you should end it in a period. An exclamation mark would also be appropriate. Also, womens fault does not need an apostrophe. Also, no need for a comma after weakness. Also, what is a preditor??? The word is predator. Also, again predators actions does not need an apostrophe (although thank you for spelling predator correctly this time). That is all.

@Hplatz Max speaking of defense attorneys, they are doing their JOB, it doesn't mean the attorney likes their client, or condone what their client has done, no matter how horrific, especially if its a public defender, the court assigns them to defend that person to the best of their ability, according to the constitution, every citizen has a right to counsel and due process, regardless of how horrific or disgusting their crime may be, if they refuse to represent whom they are assigned to represent, they can be either sensored or even disbarred, even held in contempt ..not to mention that if they don't defend them correctly, it will open the door for the clients appellate attorney, to get the case overturned on appeal.... I do know what your saying and agree w you though , by wondering how attorneys can even consider helping an abusive narcissistic monster, it's aggrevating, but unfortunately that's how the system works..... ✌🏻🍻

This why I stay single. I also have a child. I don't understand when women bring men in and out of their child's life. I don't ever want to risk bringing the wrong man into my childs life. Sometimes its best to be single. There are men who prey on women who have kids because they think the women with kids are desperate and know they can sometimes take advantage of their situation in ways that could benefit them. I don't defend the perpetrator and have great empathy for the victim, but the public defender is merely stating facts. The victim has made some terrible choices. She had just gotten her son back and made a choice to get into a relationship with a career criminal. She made a decision to take meth once, leading to addiction. She got into bar fights and all sorts of trouble. Good things don't happen to you when you make decisions such as these. I am so sorry that these awful things happened to her and her son and hope she/they get therapy and she chooses a better path going forward.
@margenek

@@perpetualplatypussy69 so you are saying because the victim was not making good life choices she was on some level to blame for what happened to her? Regardless of her choices what he did to his two victims is on him not on the victims. If he had not victimized them, he would not be in this situation. Your mind set that victims have ownership in the victimization is wrong. Could she have made better choices? Certainly, but never should a victim be re-victimized. I am sure her own conscience and the loss of her children again is her punishment. Unless they stop using drugs and make necessary changes to make their lives better they will continue on the same path. I am truly sorry he had a terrible childhood, but when we know better, we do better or end up where he is headed. @@margenek Yes, on some level she has to hold herself accountable for the decisions and actions she has taken that put her and her son in this current predicament. Did she deserve to be treated this way? No! His abuse of her and her son is totally on him 100%. She absolutely didn't deserve it, however, even blind Freddy could see that there would be a disastrous outcome. It's shitty that he had a bad childhood but it does not excuse his actions. I hope that he works on himself every day to make amends and become a better member of society. Jail is where he belongs until that happens. She should likewise do a little soul inventory of the past year or so and work on herself to ensure that son of hers doesn't grow up with more issues than he has already and that the cycle of abuse doesn't continue on in perpetuity. Wow, this guy smirks ever so slightly when this sweet soul in her victim impact statement tells of her family cutting her off now. I saw this happen so many other times during this video, but this one really jumped off the screen to me. Christopher isn’t about to change because he has an underlying rage that you can see. 7 felonies, probation failed, failed parole, doesn’t go to treatment, WTH ??? Defence wants a year in jail ??? He attacks the victim and Christopher sits there shaking his head yes !!! No wonder this poor soul uses drugs to deal with this abuse at the hands of her partner and this defence lawyer is a @#$& to attack her character. He’s abusing her all over again with every word he’s spewing out of his vile mouth. Of course the police would go see if she’s ok if she passes a note to the cashier to save her life when she’s alone and away from Christopher. Her perspective was not screwed up. Fear is fear. She wasn’t in a “haze”. She was scared for her and her son’s life. He is the one I’m worried about. Somebody cut this stupid defence lawyer off !!! Poor Christopher. It’s all about him. He can’t stand the victim whispering to the Prosecutor. Look at the extreme rage !!! Christopher is all over the victim again in his statement. Why isn’t he talking to the judge ??? If Christopher could, he’d be diving at her right there and then in the courtroom !!! He never cried when the victim spoke, but when he could, he ran on about himself. Yes, some of his points were spot on. I get that, but it doesn’t change my feelings, my opinions. Good on the judge for stopping him and being clear as to what he sees, hears and how the victim feels about what Christopher did to her. His history says everything about who he is. I hope Christopher gets help, but I don’t know if there is anything that can help someone with a prior record. And then Christopher doesn’t like the sentence and wants to still talk to the victim. I don’t know much of anything about this case but, cutting through all the red herrings the defense counsel threw in, the issue here was NOT the credibility of the victim. That argument was irrelevant. That was an issue for trial. The dude plead guilty. He admitted to the charges. This is nothing more than victim blaming and it’s unethical IMO for the attorney to have made those statements. It’s one thing for a defendant to do it, they often try to plead the blame game. It’s not right, but they are defendants for a reason (stop bawling for yourself buddy.) The attorney overstepped. The whole point is that he admittedly abused her and tried to STRANGLE her. He has a previous domestic abuse conviction on another victim. Set the victim aside, he admitted to trying to strangle her and she wasn’t his first victim. Domestic abuse does escalate. He’s at the point now of (basically) an attempted murder. I’m afraid that, because he AND HIS ATTORNEY are still acting as if this is not all his fault and trying to minimize the damage he caused, he will be back in court and probably on a more serious charge. Notice the smile and chuckle with his attorney close to the end of the video.

Where were his tears when she spoke of the effect he had on her and her son? Why was he allowed to turn and face her when she started talking. Taking off his mask, smirking and staring at her. Despicable. This POS will kill his next victim so she can't testify.

The attorney is defaming the abused, here. Which has ZIP to do with this guy’s client’s abuse of her…you can see this guy’s hair trigger just beneath his surface, not even well hidden (except maybe to himself). I hope he can find help in the most unlikely place ever, but prison is all we have to make this stop.

My x husband used to choke me while I was pregnant. I told my doctor and he told my husband he would turn him into the police if. It didn’t stop . I had lost 5 pregnancies at that time not from the abuse, but it was a precarious situation. After the baby the abuse only got worse. Which is now why he’s my x. My point is, at that time I thought it was all normal. I don’t know if I was just that young & dumb or that’s how I grew up. I left for my children ❤️. They never change !

If she only blames the victimizer she will never be free from this. Take responsibility, apologize to your family and repair what was done as a result of her choices. And for gods sake…. stay off the meth!!
