I'm very interested in charging, and I'd love to see more charger reviews covering both hardware, and systems. Reliability is enormously importent, but right up there with it is time to resolution of problems. They covered ease of repair. Awesome, but how about how quickly it is identified that there is a problem, so somebody looks at it? You could start with simple stuff, like 3/4 chargers charge 10 cars, and the 4th, zero, all the way to putting camers so you can see chargers getting blocked, vandalized, or lack of access. The only thing worse than a charger that doesn't work, is one you think will, and doesn't. EV drivers should not have to drive to broken chargers to find out they are broken, or even busy, frankly.

Great interview, Kyle. Thanks! 🙂👍 But please; no more stupid, intrusive apps. It's long past time for users to be able to use their ordinary credit or debit cards to activate and use car chargers. Every other product we buy legally can be bought using one card, so why don't EV charger suppliers get that simple idea into their heads? They might argue that they want to collect and sell user data, but that can still be done easily during the EV handshaking process.. Tesla do that as a routine part of the Supercharging process, for instance. All of these apps, cards and dongles are impeding smooth cash transactions by potential users, and some people are even dissuaded from buying EV's because they choose not to have a smartphone, especially one which is overloaded with a plethora of apps just so they can refill their car battery. I'm one of the millions who choose to use a text and voice-only phone, for low host and convenience, not to mention their very low value to a potential thief, so any app is a no-no for us. Consequently, many EV recharging suppliers do not get our business; we only buy from the ones who let us use a credit or debit card, preferably one of the many which gave RFID today.. It's hands-free, and extremely convenient.

So when the touchscreen inevitably stops working you have to replace the 4K screen 🤔 I notice most of the new hardware in Switzerland doesn't have touch screens: HyperCharger and EVTEC both rely on physical buttons. Only ABB still uses touchscreens, but the screens are small and somewhat recessed to protect them against the weather. I think Kempower has both, it's a touch screen but you can do everything using the buttons if needed. Most AC chargers don't have any buttons at all, it all works just with the RFID scanner or app. Even cost/ease of replacement aside, a big benefit of buttons is that you can use the charger without removing your gloves in winter, and have less issues when the device is wet or dirty. Sure, heating the screen is nice but it probably wouldn't be necessary if you didn't have to touch it. Those large screens remind me of the McDonald's kiosks touch screens, which I see regularly have "ghost" touches that mess up with what you are trying to do, and those are indoor and cleaned regularly. Can't imagine what will happen to large touch screens outside without cover and only cleaned once in forever.
@AlexBesogonov
@AlexBesogonov Год назад
US has a fair amount of DCFC stations with large touchscreens. And yep, they are all a shitshow. Screens fail all the time, either the monitor burns out or the touch sensor fails.
@ludwigbear
@ludwigbear Год назад
Agreed - ditch the touch screens, save hundreds of dollars and increase reliability. Who wants to stand out in the freezing cold trying to play a video game on the Autel touchscreen in the depth of winter with no game controller, no chair and bare hands? This is truly misguided thinking by Autel. I'd much rather sit in the comfort of my Tesla and use either my iPhone screen or the center console screen. The most they should need on the charging unit is RFID or a barcode to scan to launch an app on your phone to handle any need for a user interface.

In The Netherlands the most reliable AC charger station is from Alfen (Tested by multiple companies like Vattenfall, Eneco, Coolblue and other car reviewers). They have the most reliable electronics suitable for our weather’s. Hard winds and high humidity is common. They are also great for installing multiple of them. They can balance for every station individually.

@steveallwine1443 Год назад
Fully agreed. I don’t know how many different chargers I’ve come to where they’ve been vandalized by someone taking a hammer to the screen or simply spray painted. Frankly, I think the homeless around Seattle vandalize them because they light up things too much and draw too much attention to parking lots. These screens might last a week or two before being decimated. Why don’t these companies focus on more robust, vandal proof stations?? Integrating so much functionality into big, bright screens isn’t smart. At most, they should put a small status light on top of the charger (red, yellow green?) and put in a typical gas pump sized touch screen. with secondary push buttons on the side, that is dimmed until someone activates the charger.

If a charger wants me to use an app they should have wifi at the chargers. I rented a non-tesla ev and couldn't charge at 2 different FPL Evolution charger locations because my phone didn't have LTE connectivity. If they don't want to put a credit card reader on every charger then a single pay station that can be used to start a charge session on any charger could be a good solution. A pay station could also provides redundant access if there is a screen issue on a charger.
@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl Год назад
Also redundancy against issues with your phone. I once had my phone brick itself at an Electrify America on me and, of course, the credit card reader didn't work either. Ended up using a passenger's phone to call EA's customer service number to initiate the charge. But, if I didn't have any passengers, things could have gotten very ugly and, of course, my bricked phone would have made it extremely difficult to locate another charger.

5:30 is perfection. 12 kW is PLENTY for home charging (on par with 50A L2) and plenty to power the home in a V2H setup. As solar becomes more common, a ~400V inverter system is going to become more common in homes - and this would be a great piece of that

Looking forward to see some installed and test those. What I would criticize is the use of large touch screens. It invites vandalism and is another layer of complexity and maintenance needs. In fact, any UI interface on a charger could be replaced with a UI on a mobile app. You just remotely connect to the charger. Car owners could sign up for a plug and charge setup and it would work like Tesla superchargers.

I own a Bolt I bought from them so they are happy to let me use their 3 chargers. I generally just leave the car overnight when they don’t use them anyway. But many many people don’t have an easy solution like me. I see a business opportunity that would install chargers at multi unit dwellings that would be reasonably priced maybe double the electricity rate and possibly a low power DC to keep cost down and would get the charge done in 1-2 hours. This is less about any one particular charging brand but more of a set up issue. I understand its much cheaper to build out horizontally with these charging stations. Why not hide a ot of the bulk under the ground/parking spot. it would add complexity, but would beautify the area and keep more stable conditions for the unit. It would lower the risk of theft attempts as well. I have worked in factories that had pumps under the roadway. You'd just pop a truck size cover off the ground for maintenance. The concern that comes to mind is they are looking to sell the units and not to manage the sites themselves which means maintenance will still depend on the site owner spending the money to maintain the site, so you could still experience a site where most of the units are non-functional because the site owner hasn't maintained the site, just as there will be sites fully functional and fine. Why that would be a concern is that it would lead to tarnishing their name, despite their tech working perfectly much like how EA is in the gutter.

Impressive tech that seems to be evolved from heavy industry. 🙂Makes sense to cool a 1 1/2" diameter cable cool from all the power flowing through it... LOL Think!!!!

On time maintenance is the key here. If clients are asked to use an app for get ready to charge and pay, these companies need to use a separate app or so to know which unit is not working in real time to repair it and make it to get functional again, no matter if the unit is aim for travelers or for city clients.

@@marcol869 Well, you're right. I'm talking about charging stations from other companies e.g., EA which some of their chargers remains off for a lot of time.

I was going along with it until he talked about "putting the book clubs message on the screen" Cut the BS, Do not treat your customers like we are morons. That will be used as another screen to advertise to us like they've been doing at the newer gas stations. Autel makes good tools. I spent far, far too much with that company. But to throw it on my chin then tell me "smile" - no. Have ethics, Stand up for your poor company practices. "We feel like by displaying ads we can lower the barrier to entry" Fine. Id be okay with that spin. But this BS about schools and teams. Thats credibility in the trash.

I'm a PTA mom & we just donated a good chunk to our child's public elementary school to help purchase a digital marquee that will display important messages & dates. The school & community center have level 2 chargers in the parking lots for community access, so there is a non-commercial case for combining the two things.

There is only one innovation that isn't really an innovation that I and everyone else wants. Apple/Google pay compatibility. Why does every charge network have to have their own app? just integrate mobile payments, use the same RFID readers, the same network connectivity and remove the complexity from charging. Nobody expects the gas stop to require you have some app when you pay for gas.

Autel should have a good headstart on many companies, since they have been premier MFGs of diagnostic equipment for European auto repair for 20 years. Autel is a publicly held company, based in Shenzhen.

Slide credit card and the machine starts. Physical "start" and "stop" button. Any other fancy tech is in an OPTIONAL app. Membership discounts are possible, and charging companies should spend money on the back end, crediting customers who have memberships. (Or send a charge card that the customer can load money on. RFID with strip/chip as a backup) All of these other unnecessary complications are hindering EV adoption.

Must be easier than buying gas. If they figured out how to do this with an incredibly flammable and toxic substance in the 1980s, certainly we can do it today to push a few electrons.

Commercial charging needs government oversight. There needs to be regular testing (annual) for each unit making sure the customer gets the amount of current per price that is being claimed just like gas pumps are tested and regulated. Also there needs to be a law that makes EVERY charger the same design so any EV can plug into it. No proprietary connections.

My 2023 LEAF has v2x through three chademo fast charge port. In fact any LEAF newer than 2014 will do v2x through chademo. a few weeks ago a storm knocked out the power for 12 hrs and my 40kwh LEAF ran my entire house through a 20kw bidirectional charger hooked into my mains box the whole time it was out

Kyle states he likes the all in one units because they don’t need trenching or long cable runs. I assume he is not an engineer or even an electrical contractor. All in Ine/ Stand alone units do require cable runs and - most often - trenching and conduit. What he fails to realize is on larger sites, distributing power from central rectifiers via high voltage (1000vdc) allows much smaller cable, less number of cables, smaller conduit and less first cost basis. Additionally, an air-cooled EV charger described as a big computer is going to have heat issues. The more air you pull, the more particulates get through. Have more filtration. - gives less air cooling. Better have regular filter maintenance costs in the budget.

This industry is crying out for some mandated standards, the power modules should be a standard, so you’re not dependent on the whims of a manufacturer for parts. A tech should be able to turn up to any charger and fix it.

The functionality of DC Fast chargers in general needs to make a quantum leap forward in reliability. Luckily I rarely need them because I charge at home, but when I do and several stations are down it can have a big impact on your plans. And in all my many years driving gas powered cars I think I may have come across 1 or possibly 2 gas pumps that were not working. The EV world needs to reach that level of reliability, and SOON. Not only do the chargers themselves need to be made more robust, but the companies that run them need to massively step up their game and repair any broken chargers the same day they're broken or within 12 hours tops. None of this being out of order for weeks at a time. That will not do, and we can do better.

L2 chargers cannot be plug-n-charge unless it's a home unit. The J1772 protocol is too simple to allow for billing, and that's the wagon all cars have hitched to, unfortunately. (But maybe using GPS from the app, it could detect you're there, and then bill you, accordingly.)

Wow they look just like Volta Charging Stations. They will probably be able to advertise on the display. Just like Volta. It will give stores a reason. To want to have them in their parking areas.
