People here get salty that Scotty praises Toyotas but it seems they fail to realize that Scotty has been a mechanic for so long and he has worked on so many brands and he's just going by what he has seen and experienced. Some of the people hating probably have fords or dodge that are giving them issues with 50k miles on the Odometer. This man knows more than most of you.
I like Scotty, he is very entertaining and seems like a decent guy. BUT his whole spiel is aimed at a very specific demographic. However some people, in fact millions of people, never own a vehicle for 20 years or rack up hundreds of thousands on the odometer. I never keep a vehicle that hits 100k + or is 5 years old. I regularly update and NEVER have any of the issues Scotty bangs on about all the time. Sure it cost money to buy cars and replace them, that is what a huge percentage of people do. It really takes the hassle out of owning cars. Of course for those who can't afford new and to regularly update then Scotty is your man.
i've seen 328i that last as well as the corolla, yeah sure, maybe the dash looks like a christmas tree for stupid minor codes, but the engines ran solid, the suspension was still solid. the transmission was solid. everything else you need to drive your car after that is wear items and will regularly need replaced.. now on the e4x series, they did do a stupid move and ran a module resistor ground through the tail lights which causes many a diagnostic headache, but once that became known and passed around for those particular issues, put in a new bulb, and it was fixed 90% of the time. we had one customer who just came in for oil changes and brakes on his E46 3 series had over 300K miles. and the plastic bits where falling off the car, but the main body of the car was still mint.
I've owned (6) Toyotas. (2) of them trucks. They're not perfect but they are very good and better than most. Only had (1) of those that I felt was sub-standard. ('80 Celica Supra). Scotty can't help but lean into his Toyota bias sometimes. The result of that (IMO) is that he's overly critical or wishy-washy about some other solid Japanese badges/marques. (Of which I've also owned (3)).
Yes, but new, if you take care of a vehicle it will take care of you. Our 2000 celica is super rusted. The rear brakes are bad. Rear wheel wells are just gone- rusted through. Exhaust fell down and we had to tie it back up. 150k miles and burns a good amount of oil. Heat shield is loose and rattles bad. Engine is misfiring on all cylinders. Engine shakes really bad below 1000 rpm. Sunroof is rusting through and the coating on it is yellow and racking. Taillight and antenna is leaking and the spare tire area is full of water because of it. In contrast, our 92 s-10 with 255,000 miles is needing small stuff replaced- parking brake cable, ignition switch, cassette player, speaker is iffy, water pump and heater core needed replaced. The truck is from down south so it doesn’t have much rust. When the engine runs it runs great. When you take care of a care it takes care of you. Our 65 impala was sitting the in garage for 30 years. We got new tires, replaced the gas tank, cleaned the inside, and now it drives. We need to replace the wheel bearings and ball joints as well as upgrading to a dual master cylinder but the thing drives and it is 60 years old.
That might have been true in the past. I have zero faith in the 1.4L four cylinder turbos they are putting into large cars now. There is no way those things are going to hold up over the long run. There won't be any drivers getting 300,000 miles on those. No possible chance of that without major mechanical problems.
I just picked up an '03 with 130k and the V8. Runs like a top, no rust, super clean and a great buy! We also have a 5th gen with the V6 (the newer dual vvt-i version of the 1GR). Both of them will probably still be running when a lot of the new turbo 4s are in the junk yard.
Going 7 years with a CVT rolla that has 72k miles and no issues as of yet. I know that CVTs have been used since 2000. They aren’t as reliable as an AT, but I see other toyota vehicles for sale all the time with the CVT and most of them have a ridiculous amount of miles. A friend has a 2013 rolla with 220k. Tranny still going strong.
2002 Ford Explorer owner here. 320.000. miles runs great 3 trans..from pulling campers for 20 years turns on a dime 3 rd row seat..a dream paid $17.000 in 2004 KOKO keep on keeping on
Your spot on with everything you say about Japanese built Toyotas, one of my vehicles is a Toyota Landcruiser Prado ( in Australia) that was Bought new in 2006 and has travelled hundreds of thousands of kilometres in absolute reliability, it’s near on shotgun proof and It still drives like it rolled off the showroom floor last week! Why would I want to sell it off? Sure it may not have all the bells and whistles you get in an suv these days but all that is is more things to go wrong, this car is a keeper and whenever something goes awry well I will have it fixed, these Toyotas are just so well made they really are fantastic if you look after them
I bought a Toyota 4runner in 1998. It still runs great. Just normal maintenance. But of course the plastic interior bits are breaking down and the clothe seats are pretty worn but other than that it is still on the road. It has a few dings from people running into me while on the road. People offer me money all the time for it.
My daughter's fiance is a Mercedes Benz qualified mechanic in a large dealership. I was thinking of buying a Merc and he talked me out of it and told me to by a Toyota. They run forever, they are cheap to service and repair and extremely reliable.
2015 bought my daughter a used RAV4 and myself a new Takoma Paid too much but overall cost of ownership and lack of grief still came out very far ahead.
he's right, Mercedes sucks to work on, sucks to maintain, and just sucks overall, if you want German engineered car, Bavarian Motor Works is much easier to work on, if you do it yourself, ( or at least it was easier to work on, i haven't seen what the new ones are like to mess with) and typically last longer then a merc does.
@@MJSE-of7gs Was 2018 and was thinking of paying AUD$95K for new Merc C class. Bought new Camry Hybrid for AUD$64K. Get 950 km (590miles) from a 50 liter (13gal) tank. Just looked and resale price here is now nearly the same for both. AUD$34K
I had a 1990 4Runner, and now a 1999 4WD. One son drives a ‘92 and my other son a 2024. We all love them for their reliability and no-nonsense mechanics.
I agree with Scotty. We have both an ‘04 6cyl and an ‘05 v8. The ‘04 is getting close to 250,000 miles and the ‘05 is yet to reach 150,000. Best vehicles I’ve owned and the best riding comfort too. Haven’t had to deal with any rusting from issues mentioned below but I’m in the southern US. These are the kind of vehicles you just keep around even if you want to update your fleet with newer models.
I sold my 06 ES, and got a clean 06 RWD 4Runner with the works because of Scotty. Its an amazing machine if maintained. What sold me was the service records!
I've got a J-Limited 2, the sunburst yellow one. It's been garaged all it's life and has zero rust anywhere. With a blazing yellow hardtop, the yellow with reflective pearl in it, which totally makes the car. I resprayed the wheels gloss metalic black. It's my 3rd 5 in 15yrs, but this was the model I wanted. It looks amazing, I love it. It's most likely the best condition J-L2 on the road anywhere. I had it remapped too. Purely for petrol consumption savings obviously! Lol! It wasn't slow before, but it's Bloody rapid now.
Hi Scotty, some years of the 4Runners 3rd and 4th generation had serious issues with frame rust throughs. It got so bad that while Toyota never officially did a recall, they did authorize dealers to replace the rusted through frames. 4Runners have always been 100% manufactured in Japan.... No US frames were ever built. The Tacomas were another story. Most of the rust issues were of course in the central and Eastern part of the US and cause by corrosive elements used to control snow and ice. The problem was traced back to an inadequate coating that Toyota put on the frames. That and of course most of the claims were vehicles10+ years old. Toyota USA stopped the frame replacements around 2017 because it just didn't make sense to replace them on vehicles that were almost 20 years old. Even still today Toyota recommends aftermarket undercoating if you live in areas that have harsh winters. I live in Tampa FL and even I had my new 2023 4Runner undercoated and will repeat it every 2 or 3 years as long as I own the vehicle. I hope you and your wife are doing well :)
@@thinker2328 I had them use a product called "Fluid Film". This product does not really dry and stays a little tacky and provides some "self healing" properties when it get stone nicks and chips. It is very messy to apply and I would recommend that you have a shop do it. It does have some down sides - if they get overspray on any part of your exhaust system it will stink until it burns off. You also want to make sure all your drain holes are open and unobstructed. This product is sprayed inside the frame rails as well. It is not permanent and depending on conditions it does need to be reapplied. Mine has been on for almost a year and a half and it still looks good. There is a RU-vid video where a guy tests several undercoating products in different conditions and makes recommendations. I couldn't find it though, perhaps you will have better luck.
Living near the ocean, I guess it's a different type of corrosion. I've seen numerous nice vehicles online where you can see "light/surface" corrosion on under the hood aluminum components. (salt in the air.) I've always wondered how an owner is supposed to handle/prevent that.
Scotty, I'm glad you said the 4Runner because I recently bought my first Toyota a year ago. It's a 2017 4Runner Limited which had 94K miles (mostly highway). It was very clean, no dents nor scratches and I love the V6 normally aspirated engine! It was made in the Lexus plant in Tahara, Aichi, Japan to pure perfection. I've been a Ford girl all my life but when Ford went woke, I got rid of my 2019 Edge and bought the 4Runner. With the body on frame, I will be adding rock sliders, got rid of the X-REAS and had Ironman 4x4 Pro Foam suspension with 3" lift added, new Raceline Bronze Ryno Simulated Beadlock wheels and KO2s. I have a new front bumper from AFN, laser cut and welded in Portugal that I still have to install. Overall, I am very happy with my 4Runner! Thanks for confirming that I made the right choice! 😁👍
4runner owner here. Maybe it's slow, mine gets 16 mpg, and the interior is old school. BUT it's old school tech means I can fix my brakes myself, change my oil, and other small car jobs that are IMPOSSIBLE on modern cars. Ever try changing the oil on a new BMW?
after seeing the new Tacoma and 4Runners with the turbo 4's -- I rushed out to buy a old/new 2024 Four Runner before they get rid of them all....I wanted the tried and true tank of a 4runner!! - Love your vids Scotty and love my new 4Runner!
I bought a 2011 4runner SR5 Premium 8 days ago. 112k miles, no accidents, pristine condition, I love it but I have a lot of a growing To do with it. Since it’s 13 years old, I want to get advice in what to do. I’ll take anything I can get!
Great info Scotty! I decided to take your advice back in 2021 and got myself a brand new Tacoma SR5, 6 cylinder, without 4 wheel drive for 40k and totally satisfied with it! Back then I had no idea they would do away with the 6 cylinder.
My favorite car ever made is the FJ Cruiser, with the 4Runner right behind. Powerful engine, Toyota reliability and perfect drivetrain, and its never gotten stuck as much as I've slammed through mud, dirt and rock.
You always seem to be in the best vehicle ever made every few days ,please make up your mind ,other then that great channel you help alot of people out ,thanks
Frame rust is a serious problem on these. And don’t forget the rear window heater element issue which can blow out the hatch window. And the cat converter manifolds are always going bad. The X-reas suspension system is garbage. The v6 engine had head gasket issues. The v8’s were bullet proof.
Thanks for the review, and I agree 100%. I have the 2003 model, 165k miles, only very minor unscheduled repairs, never let me down, and as you said probably one of the most reliable cars ever made. A couple of comments and corrections, though: First of all, the early years did have a major rust problem. It was so bad that Toyota actually replaced the whole frame for free. Secondly, the USB ports are most likely not original, neither are the backup camera or the upgraded stereo. Third, did you mention the V8 that was availabale 2003 onwards for a few years? Now that is a smooth and powerful engine, albeit it has a timing belt to deal with, but day and night when it comes to torque vs. the V6 of the same vintage.
Why buy a new vehicle they are made like like junk I'm still driving my 83 Toyota pickup with over 700,000 miles on it I guarantee you wont find any of these new toyotas on the road 40 years from now
I had a 3rd gen. Totally bullet proof! It had almost 300k when it was totaled. I love them but I wouldn't buy a 4 cyl. The gas mileage on the 6 wasnt bad at all.
I am keeping my 2009 Landcruiser LC200 for the long term. The 4.5 litre, twin turbo V8 diesel has 320,000 km (200,000 miles), uses no oil and still gets under 10L/100km (24mpg). Never been near salt water and no rust. I dunno about the 4Runner, but I reckon the LC200 is the best car ever made.
Scotty is RIGHT! The mpg across several truck based models is pretty consistent. I’ve owned several since 1998. 4cyl, 6cyl, 8cyl all have gotten negligible differences in mpg (hand calculated) and the new ones will too, even with their neutered power plant.
Love your blurbs, Scotty. Been watching for years. However, you've banged into our heads what to buy, and what not to buy. So try finding a used cars that you reccomend.
I totally agree with Scotty, I had a Pilot 06 and a simple v6 just works magic and I am glad that the 25 Pilot still uses a v6. So I hope Toyota keep the V6 in the 4Runner and in 2 years, I may pick a 4Runner instead of a Pilot!
Just found a one owner 2006 V8 4Runner- 4X4, with 84k miles. The car looks Great!! I paid 16k for it - after tax and doing a timing belt/water pump, plugs…I have 20 k in it. I sold to my daughter for 12k. She is 23 and a recent college graduate and just bought a new home. This car should last her a long time!!
I am sitting in the best vehicle ever made . It’s a Subaru. I drove 4 of them over the years with no problems at all . And I have my new one since 2019 no problems .
Ha, I just bought a 2008 as well, 177,000 miles. Had them put new CV joints in and I plan on new ball joints and new sway bar bushings. Hoping it lasts me for many years. Good luck on your new purchase.
I got a 06 Sport edition this week. Great engine and trans but man does the car have some quirks. Like, is the sunroof closed or isn't it? And why do I have to break my left wrist to reach the window controls? Do I have to leap over the protruding running boards so I don't get my pants filthy every time? And that's just the first week!
Scotty I beg to differ 186k on my F350 4x4 Crew cab and 120k on my 2015 GT mustang. All my 4 Ford trucks and 6 mustangs have never ever been a issue with 300+k on every one of them. Probably because I service them probably.
yessssss, as a worker at Toyota for years , I'm totally agree the best SUV is 4 runner , it is very last long and strong. If you are not worry about gas price, it is the best worry free suv for you. I love it. 😍❤❤❤❤❤🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽☝🏽☝🏽☝🏽☝🏽☝🏽
Scotty, love your videos man, all of them. A little trick-one way or the other- an 03 4 runner or newer, turn the key to start and let go. The engine will start it's self.
I'm running a 2008 or sixteen year old Toyota Highlander Sport 95,000~ miles. 3.5L V6. Great vehicle and we will run it for another 5 years at least or more.
2009 pathfinder with 175,000 miles. I bypassed the transmission lines out of the radiator. All original and going strong. You can get a used one on the cheap.
Just bought a 2008 4Runner with 177,000 miles. Runs like new. New CV joints and gonna replace the ball joints and sway bar bushings. Suspension needs tightened up a tad.
Same, 2008 2wd with v6. 138k miles and perfect condition purchased last week. Gonna do the very same thing with mine on the suspension and ball joints even though they’re in decent shape.
20 years selling Toyota and Honda as well as owning one of these, totally agree 👌 If we had a used car with turbo, we tried to get rid of it as they were problem child’s My 92 Corolla Wagon has never needed a part of broke down in 30 years I have owned it and have drove it all over the country many times in those years, just change oil and normal maintenance I owe the car, so never parting with it as I have owned many cars but she is my dependable baby
I got a NA v6 tacoma I bought 2 years ago. I'll keep it and then "maybe" sell it probably for what I paid for it 20 years from now. Nothing beats a free car for 20 years 🤑
I lucked into a 2022 LimeRush TRD/Pro last July for $55k with 18k miles. I didn’t realize I was joining a huge club of happy 4Runner & Tacoma owners & just how popular they are. I see them everywhere, all years & many many old ones still on the road. It’s the best vehicle I’ve ever owned in my 69 years. I’m always looking for excuses to go somewhere. I hope I’m driving this til I leave this world.😂
Nice vehicle...we bought that vehicle - new - for my wife back in Feb of 22. She only has 24K on it and loves it! We have had a TON of Toyotas (mostly Tacomas and 4Runners) - just great vehicles. I'm in your age group...enjoy and be safe!!
I'm retiring in a year or so and I am ready to get rid of my "leak of the week" 2002 Suburban. I can't afford a new vehicle, but a nice Highlander with under 200k miles will be my ticket. I just wish I had time to shop in the south for a rust free one. I live in MN and rust is a major problem for domestic vehicles.
I have an 04 v8 Limited. These trucks are awesome! But the frames didn’t have enough zinc. These frames will rust like you won’t believe. I should know- I’m dealing with frame rust correction now and the car was from the south! Ughhhhhh
Scotty I got rid of my stupid late model Ford SUV with an EcoBoost, which was a disaster. Instead I bought a older, naturally aspirated V6 in a Ford Sedan. It's fantastic to drive &strong. Had hardly any miles, retired owner.
Scotty is so right. If you can find a well maintained 4Runner, jump on it. My 2016 Limited is amazing. Change the oil and enjoy. Smooth ride, can handle any road environment easily.
We’ve got a 1999 Lexus LX470, a 2001 4Runner and a 2017 4Runner. Both the LX470 & 4Runner are high mileage but are in excellent condition and will remain in our fleet for years to come.
No, Scotty: Your verdict about the turbo charged 4 cylindre cars from Toyota isn´t quite correct. I had a 1998 LandCruiser 90 (also known as Prado) with the very reliable 3,0 litre turbo charged 4 cyl. engine. 25 years and 350 000 km did no harm to the engine at all. Over all fuel mileage (off road, on gravel roads, on paved country roads, on the freeway in Germany) was very good. Probably far better than the straight six and V6 engines from Toyota. I know of a man who has driven his 1998 LandCruiser 90 with the same 3,0 l turbo charged 4 cyl. engine over 1 million kilometres - with the same engine and same transmission! Well, I sold my dear LandCruiser 90 and bought a 2010 LandCruiser 150 with the 3,0 l turbo charged 4 cyl. common rail engine. This type of engine has become known for injector issues. However; after 14 years and 205 000 km, my engine runs as good as a brand new one - do you mean that I´ve only been undeserved lucky with my two 4 cyl. Toyotas...? 😉
*@edvardfaleide5207*: a) that is a very (physically) large inline 4 cylinder engine (1KZ-T). b) it's a diesel c) it has a HP rating just below 150hp. (It's also low-revving at only 4400rpm maximum).
@@AndrewFaust-x1e Can´t say so much about gas turbos (although I once had an awesome 1989 Volvo 740 Turbo Intercooler, that in fact also still is on the road!) - and nothing at all about US-produced turbos. But to claim that turbo chargers and turbo engines per se are crap, is more a prejudice than built on facts and real experiences. There may be good and bad turbos. The turbo diesels from Toyota in their LandCruisers and Lexus´ certainly belong to the good ones.
That's like the New Camry, they got rid of the V6 300hp 8sp AT and now can only get a V4 Hybrid which means they are all gonna have CVT or ECVT not sure about that but they should of left the V6 AT as an option. People will still buy em but not as many as they would have. Bad move Toyota
My wife had a '94 4 Runner. She put half a million Km on it but Canadian rust destroyed it. Engine and manual tranny were indestructible. But I couldn't stand it. No leg room at all. Built for short people.
Oh and those sticky dash boards Scotty is talking about, that sticky stuff is plasticizers coming out. A chemical toxic substance injected in plastics to keep them somewhat pliable. If you ever find sticky plastics I recommend you wash your hands after toughing it. Ever wondered why everybody is getting cancer? Well this is one of the reasons .
Interesting, thing about the frames rusting. Last year, I bought a 2021 4runner from LI and was surprised the frame had so little rust. I still had it undercoated with NHOU and will do so every fall since I am in the NE. After WW3, there will be cockroaches and 4runners left. Such a well built, simple and reliable vehicle which is SO easy to maintain.😊
Engine size doesn’t determine gas mileage. It’s the weight of the vehicle that matters. You need the same amount of BTU to move the vehicle regardless of the engine size.
Scotty, my Dr. son watches all your videos. He got rid of a 22 Maverick that was in the dealership constantly, took your advice, and bought a new 2024 4Runner Pro. He couldn't be more pleased.
My 1998 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner has 61K on it and drives and looks just like it did when I drove it off the dealership lot. Now my oldest son drives it to college and never has problems. I’ll stick with the old technology because what is coming out now is crap! 😂
My '75 Land Cruiser 79,000 - miles and the vinyl (pvc) upholstery on the original passenger seat isn't ripped yet, it is not even garaged and the vehicle is older than me!
Hey Scotty ! What the heck!?!?! I had just got done watching your history of the 4runner vid before stumbling on to this one. On that other vid you said that the 03, 04, and 05 were years to avoid. Now you're saying in this video that if we see an 04 like this one, we need to run out and get it! 😂😅😂😅
The 4 cylinder turbo has more to do with EPA emission requirements than MPG....I traded my Subaru Outback for a 2024 SR5 2WD and am getting comparable city MPG...
The Toyota dealer near me told me that starting in 2025, all models will have 4 cylinder hybrids, even the Tacoma. They are no longer making 6 cylinder engines. The 2025 Camry Hybrid has 240 hp. Pretty impressive.
