Here's one for you. A/C went out on my 1995 Jeep Cherokee. No money for a $800 repair, and I thought there was probably a leak, so I just drove it for three years until finally I was prepared for the worst. Took the car in and left it. While I explained the issue, I slipped up and told the guy that I wanted it fixed even if it costs $1200, due to a brain arimthmia I guess. So, anyway, I waited, and he called me back a couple of days later. Immediately I remembered telling him to fix it no matter the cost, so I prepared myself. At that he began, saying, "Yeah, umm sir, I took a look at the Jeep A/C." So, I gritted, and I'm ready now. Probably a blown head gasket too. The wallet is open. So, anyway, he says, "Well, yeah, uh, well........you, uh, had............TOO MUCH refrigerant in the system." PAUSE. "Yeah it won't work if there is too much." PAUSE. WAIT.....WHAT? My turn, "This is a thing???" "Yes sir, it's working now." WHAT? Thoughts race through my head, "Am I supposed to charge him for the extra he took out?...I don't understand what is happening right now. This is not how things work in the world. It's a joke, April fools, Halloween. WHAT? I hadn't had refrigerant added to the A/C system in years, and there is too much?" I knew it was leaking and trashed and finally would be paying for a serious repair. Crazy. 27 years with the Jeep, and I have still only replaced a water filter and brake calipers. Even still has the original muffler. Surprisingly durable with the special added extra of the Toyota transmission. By the way, the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Parks Service made good use of these, too. This Jeep is a great beater if there ever was one!

@@dodgeapache2262 jeep made ~3 million of these from 84-01. 87 was the 4.0 intro and it got tweaked in 91 as the 190hp/225tq high output. 97 got a mild refresh exterior and new interior. 00&01 had new heads and there were flawed castings that cracked above 3&4 exhaust ports under the valve cover and leaked coolant into the oil(and destroyed bearings in process when undiscovered). 00 had federal and cali emission models and all 01s were cali. The cali models have pre-cats right under the intake manifold and will boil/heat-soak the fuel rail and injectors when shut-off and will stumble on restarts and sometimes blow the check-valve on the fuel pump(thus have to prime multiple times before cranking). Anyhow, I’ve owned at least 6 of these since 1993 and have bought, fixed, and sold many more! Watch out for chasis and floor pan rust.

My 92 Cherokee with 274k just put a new radiator and changed the water pump to be safe. It keeps going and going and going. Oh, and when we changed the pump out the water jacket was like new, no rust or gunk just super clean iron.

I just bought a 96 Detroit police package Cherokee XJ 4 months ago. Last owners did a lot of rework but never finished everything since the kid wanted a mustang instead. It's my 2nd vehicle my 1st is a 07 Scion TC. Big difference in the two. Replacing rear suspension next week since leaf springs are flat. Next is hood rust from the holes it had as a police vehicle. Then customizing it next this year. Hopefully repaint it the same color next year. Love Dana 35 and 4.0. It's a howling going down the road and love it!

I think people get in the mindset that new cars lose so much money in depreciation in the first 3-5 years) and that is true... but that only matters if you plan to sell it within the first 3-5 years. If you buy with intention of keeping it for more than 5 years (and more like 10+ years) it's not as bad and I'd say around the 5 year marker is where it doesn't matter whether you buy new or used. Of course if you're the type that likes newer cars but gets a "new" car every 2-3 years, then perhaps buying CPO or slightly used makes more sense. But if you plan to keep a car for a long time, sometimes NEW is a better deal in the long run, especially if you drive a lot. (People also forget that banks and finance will give you a lower rate on a new car --and sometimes CPO if the financing is from the mfr--than on a used car, in which case you might pay 5%-8% on a used car but only 0-3% on a new car, so that itself could make a used car cost more than a new car, especially if it's only a year or two old and very close to the price of the new car with 0% or 2% interest.
