Hey folks, thanks for checking out the video! This one took a *ton* of work to complete, and I'm somewhat insecure that the amount of effort that went into it isn't immediately apparent when watching it. I guess that's the magic of film making, eh? 😅 Videos that explore a collection/series always take a little longer because of the time it takes to assemble and verify the sets, and the fact that the majority of photography must be bespoke; however, I tried my best to highlight LEGO Studios in as best a manner as I could. Hopefully you enjoy the finished product!

Yeah, I do sometimes find myself debating whether the extra effort is worth it to change like 2 seconds worth of visuals. Putting it in tends to be rewarding though!

Let me get this straight… Lego releases a Jurassic Park III set through Lego Studios, but instead of featuring any characters from that movie, it features Johnny Thunder and Pippin Reed from the Adventurers line. Then if you want to tie it into another theme, the dinos are basically from the buildable dinosaurs range. So maybe the most things crossed over into one Lego set? 😂

“Just imagine…” is the best tagline in toy history. Studios was such a cool theme and I have so much nostalgia for it from seeing that awesome cityscape in catalogs. It wouldn’t be the same, but I do think that Studios could make for a cool subtheme for City. It could even have castle and pirate sets! Just imagine, indeed.

Lego Studios got me to convince my mother to buy me a mini dv camera. Subsequently I taught myself iMovie and Photoshop to make overlays and effects on my old apple G4. It sparked a life long love of digital creating and design. I made Normandy invasions, a tacky GTA Lego movie and many more scenes and stories. It bridged my love of Lego, into my next love that was art, and helped spark my love of learning on my own. Thanks for the walk down memory lane with the series slugger!

There was Flash and there was Brickfilm... The LEGO USB camera is just a Logitech webcam and the software has compression issues. They also had actor kits with even LEGO Ninja parts that could be entire Adventurers characters! In another set with the LEGO camera, they had color test paper sheets, do those count as green screens?

About time someone covered LEGO Studios! I, like many people commenting here, was inspired by the Studios set and the stop motion movies I made down a path towards filmmaking, from a tender age of nine years old with the Steven Spielberg Movie Maker set onwards. Having an actual camera makes that set among the top 5 Lego Sets ever made. I remember the Spider-Man and the Monsters sets quite vividly, as well!
@TheHylianBatman
@TheHylianBatman Месяц назад
This one felt a bit unhinged! Got that old Slugger energy in it, hahahaha. As someone who studied film professionally and will someday enter the industry, it's really cool to see these toys so closely convey my work! Although I have one note: You say that everything's shot on film stock, and so the theme must be set in the Golden Age of Hollywood (or at least, that's what I understood), but film stock actually carried on until the mid-2000s before finally being supplanted as the "main" conveyance method for films! Even now, film stock is still used by certain directors, such as Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight trilogy, etc.), and is still available, along with the equipment to use it! Thanks, Slugger!
@RRSlugger
@RRSlugger Месяц назад
That's a good detail to point out! I always took the look of the cameras and costumes to be "old fashioned" in this series - it felt retro, even as a kid, but maybe I'm out to lunch on that?
@TheHylianBatman
@TheHylianBatman Месяц назад
@@RRSlugger That's totally fair, but for me, I look at the crew, and the little neck lanyards scream out at me that it's a little more current! And, if given that the cameras were still in use, even if they were old-fashioned (which they definitely were, even then; film stock would've been used for fear over the unknown new product, or because of digital's then-high cost of entry, or, as said above, preference), it's also believable to me that the costumes were intentionally designed to be old-fashioned, which I totally reckon with! Some of those monster designs are straight out of the black-and-white era! I wonder if it's a remake, or just a re-imagining? Of course, it's LEGO, so you can Just Imagine that it is whatever you want! And isn't that the joy of it all?

The main set of this theme was the very first time I had a camera of my own, and the software was definitely the first time I edited video in any form. There were many steps that got me to where I am today, but there might not be a Cars Simplified without this first step. I definitely wish the project my brother and I worked on called "Director's Double-Takes", didn't get lost in the gradual shuffling of data and computers over the years. It was behind-the-scenes-of-a-movie meets Robot Chicken (before the latter existed). Possibly better as a fond memory as I don't think I have the patience for stop motion any more, so I doubt my brother and/or I would remake it. Also, I have a fond childhood memory of finding set 1355 in a dollar store (for a dollar) and my mother was willing to buy a bunch of them! I have so many Johnny Thunder minifigures because of that! I remember wanting to make a super long falling path, but I remember something made combining more than two of them complicated without the use of other/outside parts.

Your point at 1:25 has actually reminded me that when WildBrain produced _Ninjago_ Season 13 - _Master of the Mountain,_ they also produced a three-minute video of some outtakes they animated! I think the best part about these outtakes is the effort that they put into them; the producers at WildBrain even went out of the way to model a small little green screen environment just for a small skit involving an outtake with the episode _The Long Fall!_ And sure, it's unclear as to how much of the dialogue actually were outtakes from the voice actors, but you can still tell that everyone making these animated outtakes had so much fun! One of my favorite gags was an outtake for _The Son of Lilly,_ where Murtessa roars out a battle cry and rolls out into battle, only to knock over the camera, and then apologize in Tabitha St. Germain's voice.

Ever since I saw this theme on Nick’s Lego Rewind, I’ve always admired how characterful it is. The sets have the really cool behind-the-scenes lights and scaffolding, but they also work in a regular play context. Some people really hate the movie-making sets from the recent Lego movies, and they are pretty barebones, just giving you a baseplate, backdrop and place to set your smartphone. I think that they’re great - they’re really just intended as a place for you to put vehicles and minifigs while you film. Comparing them to the originals, however, is no contest. These don’t just prop up sets you already have - they are the sets. I hope someday we get a real movie-making theme again. Even if it has half as much personality as these, it would still be great.

I think that if we had been a little older at the time that this set was available we likely would have tried our hand at some movies of our own! On at least one occasion we did make what we thought at the time was a pretty good homemade advertisement for a Knight's Kingdom set. My theory: Orient Expedition is actually a Studios sub theme: A trilogy of films based on the adventures of the "real life" Johnny Thunder, starring the same actor as in the other Studios set. Legal issues involving the "real" Adventurers resulted in certain characters being changed - Pippin standing in for Gail Storm, Kilroy for Dr Lightning, Sam Sanister being an amalgamation of "real life" foes faced by Johnny & co. This might also explain the strange monsters that appear throughout the expedition, which to me give off strong "guy in a costume" vibes. The whole story about finding and assembling the dispersed elements of a mythical, powerful McGuffin is totally on-brand for a spaghetti adventure movie!

When I was younger, I didn't know this theme existed until I happened to discover an incomplete copy of a small Harry Potter set (4722) in a classroom we were having indoor recess in during early 2007. It happened to come with a catalog from 2001 which featured this theme towards the front of it. I subsequently found a copy of "Temple of Gloom" (1355) in a different location during that time, though I do understand how it may have inspired an Orient Expedition set (7411) which you reviewed previously. Oddly enough, the blue cap the cameraman wears was phased out just ten years later in 2011, though it's last standard appearance was in a Creator "Grand Carousel" (10196) from 2009.

Every Scary Monsters set had unique figures and great play features. Can't say the same about Jurassic Park III (where is the William H. Macy minifig that the all kids wanted!?). But my favorite set of all time is the Movie Maker set. It made me realize that I can not only just watch films but create my own with all my minifigures. A life-long passion for filmmaking, animation and creativity was born on that birthday in 2003. In a way, my career as a professional game developer can even be traced back to this Lego set, with its introduction to animation software. "Just Imagine". This was a great theme in the day. I remember we had this Lego Studios camera with editing software that I made stop motion videos with.

This is one of those videos I never knew I needed until now! I am entirely with you in having such strong nostalgia for Studios-it really encapsulates the imaginative potential of Lego in this period. The Movie Maker set was and still is my white whale, and inspired me to get into brickfilming even though it would be years until I got my own webcam to do it. I think there may have been a broader trend during the 1990s of interest in Hollywood and nostalgia for the golden age of movies. Studios was perhaps Lego’s attempt to get in on that trend, though I really wonder how much appeal the concept actually had to kids even then (I guess that the line lasting for three years does prove something). I don’t think that a revival or spiritual successor would work today, though. The “mystique” of Hollywood and filmmaking has diminished greatly because of the internet, RU-vid, and social media, and I can’t imagine many kids getting into this.

@RRSlugger Месяц назад
Indeed, well said! Many kids want to be "RU-vidrs" now, not film makers; to be fair though, that line has certainly blurred over time as RU-vid videos have become higher and higher quality.

As pre teens me and my friend were inspired by the advertising for Lego Studios to make our own films. We agree to both save up together to go half and half on Lego Studios but then his dad just ended up buying a grown up digital camera and we just used that.

My Friend had Lego Studios. And I was Infatuated with it! I wanted to make SO MANY MOVIES! and We did! Oh Man! I Remember every Weekend, Every sleepover we ever had, I made a good 30 minute stop motion video. Knowing what I know now about computers... I was probably the One who killed their Family computer with overloading it with countless hours of Stop Motion Footage. My Bad... Lol. This was probably the Best thing and only thing that brought me Joy during my Middle school years! Wow!!! what a shining moment in that dark Puberty stained time of my life!

I actually owned the Scary Laboratory set as a kid. What a rare moment, I happen to have laid eyes on a LEGO set irlthat Slugger has not! I was a big fan of cars at the time, so buildings didn't captivate my attention as much. Thought the set is full of very nice pieces I'm happy to have in my collection: The classic glow in the dark ghost outfit, Frankenstein's Monster, Swirly portal piece, brain in a jar, working mirror, jack-o-lantern, Steven Spielberg... Other than that, it is a massive supply of old gray, dark gray and some sand blue pieces if I'm not mistaken. I believe the set also came with a CD that let you watch stop motion LEGO films. As a kid, I didn't understand how they got the LEGO to move, so I assumed the special LEGO camera would live edit the hands out of the footage and you could just record it like a video.

Great video Slug! It's a shame LEGO Studios was only cancelled a mere 2 years after it's launch. I would've adored more LEGO Studios sets. The play features were great and I hope to get more LEGO Studios sets in the future, might even get the LEGO Studios camera as a novelty! I remember commenting on your video at some point asking you if you will cover this theme haha

That lego video camera set built my interest in stop motion animation. It taught me how much work goes into making those types of films. I even tried entering a lego star wars animation contest. I didnt even sort of win but it was fun to try.

A couple years ago in all of the Joe Freeman/Sam Grant confusion of Adventurers names, I wanted to classify those other names of characters as the actor names from Studios. Dino Head Attack doesn't include Gail Storm, she's an actress named Lindy Lovely. Doesn't it sound more like a Hollywood name than our weather-related counterparts?
