I build this 7x3 meter DIY 3D printed Camera Robot Gantry to make filming in my workshop easier for myself and to be able to create more dynamic footage! And by applying out of the box solutions I managed to keep the costs of this project very low!
Since this is my first video on this new channel, I would love to get your feedback on this video! Because I want to create content that you can enjoy and that is also useful, so your feedback is very welcome!
For everyone who wants to tinker with the design or the code, the 3D files (.STEP and .F3D) and Arduino code for the Gantry and the Remote are available for free here:
www.cults3d.com/en/3d-model/gadget/robot-camera-gantry
Don’t forget to like the video and subscribe if you’ve enjoyed the video because i have many great projects planned!

I'm not sure if someone else recommended, but for you to get read of the battery, I would recommend to use the H configuration, as an Voron printer. Like that the motors are fixed at your ceiling. Like that you would use more cable, but allow to use an fixed powersource and controll unit.

Pretty cool project! 👏 An idea, to avoid splitting the rope at the Pulley, I recommend to used instead a set o multiple 3D Printed Smooth Pulleys (not with teeth), geared interconnected (so all are Driving Pulleys), and positioned into a Zig-Zag pattern. You probably need 4-6 Pulleys. This way you'll have way more surface friction to drive the rope (even without the teeth to damage the rope). This method is commonly used in engineering and you also don't need contra-pulleys which are pushing on the rope. Hope you understand how I described it :) And good luck on the next projects!

@@ConceptCraftedCreationsI think Kevlar cords would work in this scenario without having to redesign the motion system. Pulleys if you were moving a more significant load. Although I don't know how much the current design could handle to even need a pulley system.
@jeradw7420
@jeradw7420 4 месяца назад
@@ConceptCraftedCreations Another option would be to use a capstan instead of several pulleys. With 3 - 5 turns of the rope you will have enough friction to drive it.

May I suggest a forgotten 3d printing element for your motion system? Fishing line instead of string. Its far cheaper than using belts and will hold up much better than string.😉
@fabricionicoletti4006
@fabricionicoletti4006 5 месяцев назад
Good Idea. Most likely both string and fishing line may eat through 3d printed holes because of friction. you could add PTFE tubes inside the wholes to prevent (or mitigate at least) it.

Cool idea and execution. Since the filament drive is wearing the string perhaps consider a mechanism similar to the capstan on a ship if you decide to upgrade. You wrap the string around a pully several times, and as long as there is some tension on both sides friction keeps the string from slipping. In a ship the weight of the anchor provides the tension, but you could use guide pullies on a spring to tension your whole system

For the drive mechanism, I can't help but think back to the old rope/string driven 3D printers. They used dyneema cord wrapped a few times around pulleys that often had spiral grooves to keep the wraps evenly spaced. I'm thinking you'd be very pleased if you switched to dyneema cord, zing-it would be a great one as it has a special coating so it can hold knots that would make it ideal on pulleys. I used to make my own backpacking hammocks and using dyneema for the suspension, and cutting the cord to make splices would wear out a blade in no time. That's the other huge benefit, dyneema cordage is sliceable, so you can splice it into a continuous loop with little to no bump at the joint. It also has near zero stretch. The durability, spliceability and low stretch make zing-it a perfect choice for this imo.

really cool idea. When we build a gantry crane we have the supports near the center and then the wheels ride on top of the rails so you don't have to worry about sideways pressure holding it on. Also the more wheels you have the smoother the move over the joints in the track.

Awesome design and build. I'd suggest changing to a steel cable. Pricey but it never breaks. You could also use an esp32 as the control module and control it by wifi on your smart phone. With regard to the positioning system, I think thats a great idea. Programming it shouldn't be too difficult but I'd suggest having a limit switch on the back of the room if you havent already got that done, just so theres a home or Zero position.

You need smooth acceleration and deceleration. Stepper motors with proper handling would work better. Also you need a better way to convert rotational motion to linear motion to make the movement more controllable and predictable.
@ConceptCraftedCreations

This is awesome! Do you have a list of parts / tools that you used in the video (bearings, microcontroller ..etc) It would be cool to also add a motor to control the z axis as well as the tilt of the camera. Long term it’s probably less of a pain to add the components to make it a belt drive if the string is fraying so soon. I’d love to make a much smaller version of this. I’ve only used .STL files though. Unsure of the format you have listed.
@ConceptCraftedCreations
@ConceptCraftedCreations 5 месяцев назад
Thanks mate! Appreciate that! I will add a list with the parts i used to the file on Cults3D before the end of this week. Hope this is soon enough for you? And i used the rope from a cheap power kite i had lying around. I've just swapped it out with 1.75 TPU filament and that is working great so far! I like to try out new things like that so that's why i went for the rope option :) Good luck on your version! U can convert the .STP files to .STL files with a program like Fusion 360 for example.. It's free to download en use for hobbyist like us.
