Interstate 540 (I-540) and North Carolina Highway 540 (NC 540) are part of a partially completed beltway around the city of Raleigh in the US state of North Carolina, forming the Raleigh Outer Loop. When complete, the route will completely encircle the city, meeting its parent route of I-40 in two locations.

There is toll roads in monroe and raleigh-durham and a express lane downtown charlotte and they are starting on 485

The non-tolled part of 540 is signed I-540; the tolled part is signed NC-540

Here's something that bothers me: the tolled part of 540 gets to have brick sound walls and decorative bridges and exit gantries, while the untolled section has generic sound walls. Why does Western Wake get all of the good stuff?

As a North Carolinian I can say that its not because that part is richer. The Northern part of wake county is the richest in fact. (the 27614 area code is one of the richest in the state). I belive the Northern part of 540 is poorer quality is because it was built 25 years ago. The tolled section was tolled to receive funds quicker, or else it would never be completed, at least not in our lifetime. It just looks nicer for some reason because its tolled. Bonus: US-1 in Northern wake county, better known as Capital blvd, is going become an 8 lane freeway, which is awesome considering its a 4 lane highway with stoplights, and has tons of traffic every morning and evening. Problem is, for it to get done, it will need to be a toll road. While capital will flow much better, people wanting to avoid the tolled road will travel untolled parallel roads, like Falls of Neuse and Luoisburg (US-401). Im just yapping at this point imma stop

They are supposed to be working on I-540 making it an entire loop around the outskirts of Raleigh. NC-540 is supposed to be the loop part of the highway. Then when it intersects at I-87 it will turn into I-540. Bet your glad you have a EZ-pass North Carolina mike

I thought this was the loop too. My sister lives in a small town outside of Raleigh and used to live in Durham. I thought I knew all the main roads in the area… we had gone down to see her for years. Seeing a road that loops around I-40, then hits RDU and Durham but starting in Apex/Cary is confusing. 55 is south of 40, or at least I remember it was. One thing I do remember is they needed a faster connection between 85 and 40. I haven’t seen this cross 85 at all. I have to check the map.

2024: Final part of the loop listed as under construction as a toll road. And I-87! We're going to New York? Nope. Rocky Mount. I-87 resumes a few hundred miles north on I-95.

Okay - why is US 1 so far west? Blame Interstate 85 - US 1 followed it southbound beginning in Petersbutg VA (instead of Interstate 95) - it does not rejoin Interstate 95 until it reaches the Sunshine State- three states south. Instead, Interstate 95 has - by turns - US 301, US 13, and US 17.

Yeah. They want this new extension to go from Raleigh to Norfolk. In a perfect world it would continue up the coast to NY but I doubt it.

The Interstate system has essentially run out of mainline routes in the northern and eastern US. I-92 is unclaimed, and that's it. So you will see more unconnected parts of some routes as time goes by.

They theoretically *could* sign I-64 and I-95 as I-87 to link the two, but that’s probably just going to be considered redundant and confusing honestly.

Yes, there are 2 separate I-87s, one in NC and one in NY. As a NC resident, we don't call it 87, we still call it US 64. It doesn't make sense either, given 87 is a north south number, but it goes east west from raleigh to norfolk. Imo it should be I-48 or sumn like that

Naming it I-87 also never made sense to me because there is already an NC route 87. Sure, they don't cross and they don't exist in the same counties, but having both roads in the state with the same number can be confusing.
