As a former tanker driver, my guess is that the driver underestimated the curve and took it too fast. I was always taught to go 10 mph below the posted speed limit for a curve.

Thanks for covering this. I'm a Philadelphia resident and I travel through this region every day for my commute. Everyone's taking to the side streets in Northeast Philadelphia and it's complete gridlock. Turns what's normally a 20 minute commute to and from work into over an hour. It's somewhat comical because this region of I95 has been plagued by other construction projects over the past couple years. This is going to be a long couple of months.

Theoretically, it's possible to fix a bridge like that in a fairly short time. The Atlanta I-85 damage from 2017 was fixed within two months under emergency circumstances. I also discovered an article that had some surveillance footage from a nearby business that recorded the actual crash - the truck was coming around that ramp really fast before the crash, so it's not hard to imagine what really happened here.

Thanks for a nice overview of the situation. i just drove home form Virginia, and electronic signs warning of the closure started where I-95 breaks off from the DC Beltway/I-495 . I drive the route regularly, and it was shocking to cross into Philly on I-95 and see the road virtually devoid of traffic. My exit -Cottman Ave/RT-73. - was the one that was destroyed. I got off at Delaware Ave. south of center city and took local streets to get home. Wasn't too bad, but this was at 2PM, prior to rush hour. The closure will mainly impact the residents of Northeast Philly and those who take I-95 North to the PA Turnpike East, and then connect to the NJ turnpike via the Delaware River turnpike connector bridge. Even before this closure, much of the long-distance traffic heading to or from North Jersey or the NYC area and beyond hops off I-95 in Delaware and takes the Delaware Memorial Bridge to the NJ Turnpike or I-295 in NJ. The I-95/I-295/Delaware Memorial Bridge Interchange is often In complete gridlock, so a good alterative is the Commodore Barry Bridge farther north in Chester.PA, which has connections to I-295 and the NJ turnpike. Safe travels!

For an idea of how big a deal this is, I95 collapsing is the same level of event as the same happening to Ontario 401 if it were elevated. That's how important this road is.
@davidneman6527
@davidneman6527 Год назад
This is an important highway closing, but it wouldn't compare it with a failure on the 401. The reason is that this part of I-95 -- unlike most of I-95 -- is not the main East Coast interstate. This part of I-95 is basically a Philadelphia area commuting route. Traffic coming North on I-95 through Delaware bound for New York City and New England will turn off I-95 before Wilmington, cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge, and continue north on the New Jersey Turnpike, which regains the I-95 designation at the Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange.

(Love the Rocky III reference!) Another reason why Philadelphia won’t suffer as much as Atlanta is because it has a much better public transportation network. That being said, in fall 1997, a similar incident happened in Yonkers, NY on I-87, when a tanker on Central Avenue was T-boned by a speeding motorist. A temporary bridge was completed within two weeks; the permanent bridge took a few months.

Tacony resident here. Monday I took the Roosevelt Blvd just out of pure “not wanting to sit in traffic-itis”. It added about 15 minutes to my usually 20 minute commute. The Boulevard wasn’t really any more packed than any other day. Yesterday morning and this morning I took State Road to the Cottman NB entrance and had really smooth sailing. It was about 20 minutes today, right where it should be. I haven’t even attempted 95 on the way home….that would be a new lesson in futility that my newly non-smoking self wouldn’t be able to put up with. I think a lot of the trucking companies are heeding the warnings and sending their drivers over into NJ to avoid the backups. The only time I really saw surface streets get snarled up was on Sunday. So far everyone involved get an A on their crisis management report cards.

People always jump at bad infrastructure but I drive all over the west coast and the amount of new bridges and infrastructure is absolutely insane, they invest a hell of a lot of money, I5 in Tacoma bridges are all brand new, 520 bridge over Lake Washington is brand new, the bridges of i90 over the Snoqualmie mountain pass are all brand new and very massive structures, i5 mountain passes near Mount Shasta in CA are all brand new, so much new stuff... then you have Las Vegas everything is brand new there, Salt Lake city also tons of new bridges and highways, Sacramento CA major highways and route 99 is all new, I84 bridges and mountain passes so much new stuff.

A timely video, Mileage Mike! I think you are spot-on comparing it to Atlanta in 2017. How about that I-35W bridge failure in Minneapolis 16 years ago? It was going to take months, but they got that Mississippi River bridge up again in 49 days back in August-September 2007. It carried 140,000 vehicles per day, similar to this section of I-95. Took only 43 days to rebuild I-85 in Atlanta. So my guess is August 1, 2023. I actually wonder how important it is compared to I-295 and the NJ Turnpike, both of which have been around a bit longer and seem more traveled than I-95 in Philadelphia even today.

I think they should call for NJT trains to run from Trenton to 30th street, since the NJT drivers are already certified to do so. Maybe allow those trains to run express service, and let SEPTA’s equipment run full local service, since it’s better to have an MU do that kind of work

Two reasons it won't impact through-traffic as bad as everything thinks: 1-that part of i-95 has been under construction for the past decade (I'm not kidding!), so most locals avoid it. 2-most DC to NYC traffic take the faster option of i-295 through NJ. Also, fun fact, i-95 was never fully complete/continuous from Miami to Main until 2018 when the North Philly to NJ connection was finally finished.

It may be impossible due to the massive fire damage to determine if the driver had a medical incident (heart attack, stroke, diabetic low sugar condition and passed out, fell asleep) or if something just went wrong mechanically on the truck, hit another vehicle or was just going too fast. The driver had considerable experience, likely in a familiar place, perhaps making a delivery from a nearby refinery at this exit ramp. This is still this is going to be a mess for the forseeable future, the Southbound side also suffered structural damage from the fire so may have to also be replaced. At least this happened on a early Sunday morning, not on a rush hour weekday morning.

I've been looking at the map, it looks like they could close the princeton st onramp, widen the offramp that goes under the bridge, connect it to the princeton st onramp for a 2-3 lane (tight) bypass of the destroyed bridge. It wouldn't be perfect, and it'd be slow, they'd have to have people down to 20 mph or something, but probably better than completely shut down.

I wonder if they considered placing shoring under the remaining side to reopen it while reconstructing the collapsed side. Then later they could remove the shoring and rebuild that side too.

I tend to find highway memorials a bit much, but in this case, I would be in full favor that once repaired, this becomes known as the Nathaniel Moody Memorial Overpass, with the signage adding for people to appreciate truck drivers.

Can't agree with that.. this truck driver caused a lot of harm to society by his reckless driving. Many millions of dollars worth of damage, not including the harm to the economy, or inconvenience to hundreds of thousands of his fellow citizens. I know he paid the ultimate price for it, but he's the last person deserving of public recognition. The only memorial for him should be at the end of a mandatory video shown to each and every new tanker driver on how NOT to drive a truck and how not to expose your fellow citizens to direct harm or death, or indirect harm. I'm a truck driver, ( 20 years now) so I know the responsibility that comes with operating an 80,000 lb vehicle. I can't fathom how any fellow truck driver operating a tanker truck loaded with a flammable load would ever drive so imprudently/recklessly.. if he was driving like that, he probably regularly sped over the speed limit and recommended speeds on ramps. Don't get me wrong.. it's very sad that he died, and for his loved ones.. but a public memorial for him isn't appropriate.

As an retired truck driver with 3 million miles it’s easy to see the cause. It’s ramp and he was going to fast. That’s were most rollovers happen. If he was working all night 5 to 6 in the morning is the worse time for driving.

Looking at this from a regional perspective, I really think NJ can help this a bit by building more interchanges on their major roads. There's a few major roads that simply cross over each other and don't directly connect and I think building some interchanges there can help the situation (really, it's difficult to go between 295 and the Turnpike as needed because for the most part you have to use local roads). The big one I think would be between the Turnpike and NJ 42, which would make I-76 a much more viable detour. Possibly also a direct connection between 295 and the PA Turnpike (the one in Florence, NJ, not to be confused with the recently built interchange in Bristol, PA that rerouted 95).
@njdevilku1340
@njdevilku1340 Год назад
That's funny. You think the NJ Turnpike Authority wants to make it easy to leave the Turnpike??? They are part of the reason the PA turnpike/i-95 flyover took 30 years to build.
@boltstrike2787
@boltstrike2787 Год назад
@@njdevilku1340 A NJ 42 exit would actually give people MORE incentive to use the Turnpike, since they could get on it earlier than Exit 6. Also, how the NJ Turnpike Authority keep PennDOT from building an interchange between 95 and the PA Turnpike, which is what closed the gap? I know they cancelled the Somerset Freeway which caused the gap in the first place, but they have no authority over interchange construction in PA.
@MileageMike485
@MileageMike485 Год назад
I think the lack of interchanges on the NJ Turnpike are intentional to minimize use by local traffic.
@boltstrike2787
@boltstrike2787 Год назад
@@MileageMike485 Well yeah, you don't want to have tons of interchanges on a turnpike, but some of the choices of exits, especially towards the south, empty onto local roads to the point where you'd think it's designed for the exact opposite purpose, they seem like they're designed more for locals than long range drivers. NJ 42 would make sense for a Turnpike exit because it's a major highway for larger and longer range destinations like Camden, Philly, and Atlantic City. Instead they made an exit with NJ 168, which is a more local road with tons of traffic lights and seems to be designed for local traffic. So why was there an exit created for 168 instead of 42 if the purpose is to funnel longer distance traffic to and from major destinations in NJ? EDIT: Did some research and found that 168 is an old alignment of 42, so that made some sense at the time, but in the present day it really needs an exit with 42 more than 168. Not sure if they'll ever demolish the interchange with 168, but they definitely need to at least add one with 42. If there's one road that needs to empty onto the Turnpike it's I-76 and there's no real way to do that without taking local roads.
