I Accepted a HUGE Machining Job, but I Have No Idea How to Do It 

Call me old fashioned, but I love stories like this where we build our own stuff. The engineering, the production lines, all that problem solving, the shop banter, and just figuring stuff out... Love that environment. The 3D folks are like that too. I hope it keeps coming home.

This is dope, I run/work in a rapid prototype shop in an aerospace environment. We do everything in house from a solid block of material to programming, setup and inspection. To take pride and ownership in our art is the best feeling ever! keep it up.

I had my car broken into today, and had a bunch of expensive stuff stolen. I haven't heard this story from Titan before, and just to hear about working and going to make things happen has been some consolation that things will always go up from rock bottom. When one door close another opens. The key is to be in "the game". No matter who's ahead of you producing, very often the point man drops the ball. If you're in the game you'll have an opportunity to pick the ball up. Keep yourself in the game no matter how insignificant your role is at the moment.

That is inspiring to hear how you came back from losing a good customer to picking up an awesome customer. This is the kind of knowledge that the youth of today needs to understand.

It's one thing to push out the test piece that you work on 24/7 perfectly to spec, then there is the fact that you have to make 1000 of them, all to spec, under contant time pressure. If you manage both, then you are a fabricator.

I cannot fathom how good you felt when they looked at that part and said it was perfect. And then “give them as much work” like wow man, I had goosebumps and felt over the moon just at the thought of an experience like that. So happy for you and since you’re meeting their expectations you guys totally deserve it. Big thumbs up and thank you for sharing this inspirational experience of yours

I have inspected many parts made by outside vendors, some of them always giving us parts that were out of tolerance. On the other hand, I also inspected parts from a vendor new to us and found them to be not only all in tolerance, but almost all parts right at nominal on all dimensions. I told my boss literally the same things as Titan mentioned in this story, "Give these guys as much work as they want/can handle." To this day, they have not let us down or deviated from the level of quality they gave us on that first job. So in my opinion, quality definitely does matter when choosing which vendor gets the work, not just the price quote.

You're absolutely the Tony Robbins of machining. It's a joy listening to your stories. ......and the largest tool I've ever bought is a Delta drill press. I loved machine shop back in the '70s in high school but I never pursued machining as a career. I remember touring our local community college and they actually had a CNC milling machine. That right there scared the crap out of me. On an out of town field trip to Portland Oregon, we toured a Hyster machining facility, the FMC shipyard, a metal foundry an an engine rebuilding shop. Technology has made unbelievable strides. You grabbed the bull by the horns and never looked back. Congratulations on your success 👍

You know what, when I read your story, I talk myself that oh my god! This man is really my hero! It seems that we are doing the same thing, but it really doesn’t same! You are my idol, ok? I worked for a company who made the A frames and winches for Shilling that launches these ROV's. They were used on ships made in LaRose Louisiana for the Gulf supply ships. They are really neat machines.

I’m not in machining or cnc (I’m a software developer) but I’ve been blessed by the YT algorithm to your channel and watching all your videos just makes me low key jealous that I don’t run a machining shop because listening to your stories just makes me want to machine the hell out of some metal and conquer that glorious moment when the customer says it’s perfect… that is some victorious sh right there! Albeit I get my little victories in software too, I suppose we do somewhat intricately related stuff sometimes - you make the physical stuff, I make the digital stuff that makes the physical stuff come to life… but still, I do crave sometimes after watching your videos to go out there and do some intricate stuff with my hands as I don’t get enough of that sitting behind the computer screen all day… it’s always satisfying to touch and feel a masterpiece of expert work that you’ve put time and effort into.

I tell my guys, make the parts correct to numbers and information that's on the prints. Then imagine your buying that part with money out of your own pocket. The scrap can stays empty and the reject / failures aren't there.

I worked as a CNC tech operating a huge bed mill back in -08, just before the recession hit. Our boss had put alomst all eggs in one basket so when the recession hit, Sandvik stopped everything we manufactured for them so we lost 70% of our business over night, I had to go and 4 other machine guys got laid off aswell. So having a company who relies on others that much it's vital to not have a customer of that size supplying you with job.

If you ever get tired of this. You should become the Gordon Ramsey of Machine Shops. Go to failing shops and try to turn them around. I know there has to be thousands of shops that would qualify. Love your stuff, guys!

The money is nice for sure but nothing feels better than making something for someone and wowing them. One of the best feelings, and even more so when its a skill/trade you are passionate about. I got a little of that feeling second hand from just hearing this great story. This is how you get things done.

Everyday our boss accept job that he don’t have idea how to do. And thats how we grew and won difficult challenges .We produce solid carbide endmills and everything made of tungsten carbide, it would be awesome that titan would try some of our products! When I was a Tool&Die machinist back in the 70's we didn't have any CNC machines. Everything was done by hand and the layout table was used heavily. Then I joined the USAF and went to work straight out of basic training to my job no tech school. Also got 2 strips straight out of basic. The metals in the Tool & Die were mostly tool steels of many different types and heat treatments. The Aircraft metals were mostly different types of aluminum. My first time to see and feel Titanium I was amazed at the strength of the metal for such a small size like..375 inch was so strong that I put a bad part in a vice at the end of a long heavy work table and tried to bend it. Had to use a cheater bar about 4 feet long. All i accomplished was lift the other end of the table. I put the Titanium in a lathe and it ran true. It did not bend. I kept some of the old parts and made many useful things out of it.

I make parts for bullet manufacturing. Plates with thousands of holes. Each hole has a tolerance of +\- .0002 Some of them are +\- .0005 Each hole has to be perfect. Otherwise there would be a big 💥 at their plant. Tight tolerances aren’t bad once you know what you’re doing. I

Yeah my current boss is like that too. Take the job without even thinking if we can do it. Just 2 weeks ago he took some prototype to make. Alu, 4 parts, somewhat complicated but not too problematic. To be done in 2 days. Quick programming and some simulations on easy mode we got like 4 hours per part. Cool we do it on 2 machines and we can be done easy. There was one part that was a bit worrying. 1mm slot 8mm deep. Next day 2am I'm done with first side. It's beautiful so I put second part to do it overnight. Might as well save 2 hours. I come at 2pm for my shift and first side done. Second side still to program. Getting a bit tight. Get completed program at around 9pm. Simulation says 5 hours. Yikes but doable. Set up machine and all to be perfect. Run the program at midnight. Stay with machine till half past 3. Only some minor stuff to be done with no chance of crash so I leave it running. Come back and first part is still in machine. Last tool broke(1mm slot) and new program needs 9 hours to finish. Well fuck. But at least its working. Set up second machine to do the same part. Change the first part at 8pm. And wait till 4am to change last part. That was my last week before Christmas. We had to cancel production on 2 machines, we just had a crash on 1 a week earlier and we still didn't have 5th(new) machine set up.

Nice this is the key be recognized as being really good at what you do. And get out there and do it for yourself and put your own people on.

The place i was working at before i retired was a dream team of tecs Major shipper came to us asked us to be their main supplier of parts and repairs suppliers of vehicles Then once we agreed their demands became unreasonable We had many other customers we needed to take care of also The shipping co kept throwing their weight at us wanting everything now Like making a deal with the devil

I used to machine piercing point for seamless pipe mill od and bore piercing points on horizontal hexagon boring machine i loved that work wae all hands on training

Maybe am wrong ,but you guys was already machining Titanium. There was the titanium foot peg and the titanium lion,60hp machine 150 pound titanium etc. . So this first time story, I Google it "How to machine Titanium " kinda funny.

1000 of an inch haha on a cnc is easy. We used to do that shit on manual machines at 2000ths. With manual grinding machines we where working at 5000ths inch in 20°C vibration controlled environement (25 years ago). Then using mitutoyo cnc measuring machines. Sandvich carbide cutting tools. Miss those days

This is inspiring, sometimes you have to push your limits without passing them too much. Today it is more complicated, parts and materials are going up in price at a fast rate and hard to find at any price and employees are very hard to find, no one wants to work so wages are climbing through the roof. What you would have paid a semi-skilled factory worker a year ago McDonald's is paying them as starting pay plus a sign on bonus. I have a huge amount of orders for my products and am renovating a new, larger building for the higher production needed but even finding plumbers, electricians and roofers to do the work is nearly impossible and when you can they are taking a long time to complete the work do to parts shortages. There is so much work out there but no one can find the help to do it. We are living in strange times, something is up and it ain't any good.

I am now 45. I remember doing parts like this with none cnc machines. I was the new kid learning all this stuff iso gcode blah blah blah. Then went to look for job but all jobs went to China and eastern Europe.
