I accidently built THE KRAKEN in Kerbal Space Program!

I had heard a lot about the kraken whilst playing kerbal space program, but I never thought I would end up engineering and building my own kraken in ksp! I tried to just fix Simon the snake but ended up with a game breaking space squid!

You accidentally put a heat shield between the fuel tanks by copy-pasting the shield. Heat shields don't allow fuel flow, blocking the engines from accessing the other tanks.

There is also a right click option for heat Shields that allow you to add to staging and eject it after you've slowed down

The "kraken" is the computational physics modelling limitations, and usually creates issues that would in real life break physics as we know it. Like parts stretching wildly or flying off at infinity. Btw I like the "Hello fellow engineers" intro!

RCE, this is how to stop (or at least weaken) the wiggle, use autostrut! Here's how to enable it: 1. Go to settings and enable advanced tweakables; 2. Right-click every tank and click "autostrut". It is disabled by default. 3. Autostrut copies with copying Don't tell the architects

@@RealCivilEngineerGaming there is no need to not include a decoupler. and heat shields are used for entering the atmosphere. not decoupling the rocket parts when re entering will cause them to explode and may affect the cockpit. please include a decoupler

@@RealCivilEngineerGaming The decoupler on the heatshield decouples the heatshield, along with the parts below it, so if you decouple with the heatshield it will just be serving the same purpose as a decoupler (falling away uselessly) and will do nothing to protect your pod on reentry. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, it doesn't actually work that way. TL;DR : The decoupler on the heat shield makes the heat shield fall off

the heat shield DOES work like a decoupler. You have to manually enable it though (while building or while flying)

I mean, the fallacy only technically holds true if the rocket body itself is rigid. He's discovering a whole new kind of reason not to put the rocket motors at the top in this case.

You should put a decoupler between the heatshield and the rest of the rocket so you can actually separate the pod. Edit: he finally did at 13:25

try placing the engines less as you go farther down, then the bottom can still pull its own weight but it won't wobble as much.

from 2 parts down from the capsule, autostrut to the root (right click the tank to access this), everything else autostrut to the grandparent *should* keep it from wiggling like that. Autostrut, as the name suggests, does the same as the strut parts in the structural tab. Be careful though, as there are some instances (which I, myself, have yet to encounter) where they will prevent decoupling. Also, any part directly attached to the decouplers should be autostruted to grandparent, as that will strut them to the part on the other side of the decoupler and not the decoupler itself. I only use autostrut heaviest part on parts that are directly attached (or attached via decoupler) to the heaviest tanks on my ship, and for wings (if you don't strut your wings, they CAN and WILL rip off of the ship if there's too much force applied to them). Really wish there was an autostrut to attached part, but this set up has worked in every case I've tested it in. Also, push T for Stability assist. Be warned though, that in some setups this can actually cause worse control problems.

you can use struts and reaction wheels to stabilize your ship as well as turn on SAS when you launch and try using longer fuel tanks so its less flexible and in between the fuel tanks and the heatshield use a stack separator also get the 2 DLC because they have things you will want to make your rockets better

I know I'm late to the game but in real life - and seemingly in this game too - the lower parts of the rocket can move faster than the top because of air resistance. This means you have to put less or less powerful thrusters on the bottom of the rocket to stop the wiggling.

If you're not going to fast, a decupler and no heat shield should be just fine and more convenient, but if you plan on going orbital (or really fast) you should put a heat shield and a decupler on. You can detach the heatshield but you want it for reentering the atmosphere so heat shield and decupler are important for that. Also if you want to solve the wobblieness of the rocket, you can turn "advanced tweakables" on. You can find them in the Options. That will allow you to turn on autostruts and ridgit joints (both can be turned on by rightclicking any part). If the Kraken is mercyful the snake should be able to stay together.

Every thruster after the first ones is carrying less weight the further down the snake you get. The first set of thrusters are carrying the entire craft and will only go as fast as the weight of the craft will let them. Every other thruster is then trying to go faster than top section because they are lifting less weight. The top has all the weight, but the bottom has none, therefore 2/3 of the thrusters are redundant, causing the entire craft to be unstable. If you want a real snake, make it without any thrusters to begin with, then add a couple of detachable Mammoth thrusters to the very top. Then add a few ion thrusters, solar panels and gyroscope modules so you can fly in space! Ive done this myself as inspiration from your first video.

I think what you should do is put all the rocket engines you want to use at the top of the rocket, in effect dragging the rest of the rocket up with it. You could also put some directional stabilizers on there and then turn on SAS for better control. Also, your tried spinning the rocket with the liquid fuel engines at a slight angle, but you still had the fins on. The whole point of the fins is to stop that exact rotational motion. My advice would be to do what I mentioned before by putting all the engines at the top, and then only tilting one or two of the duo/trio/quartet rockets.

Hold shift while using the rotate tool and the move tool to make more precise adjustments, also when you use shift with the move tool, you can make floating objects

I'm not sure if this works in kerbal but I would suggest putting something big and heavy at the very bottom bc the air resistance and inertia resists acceleration (from the wiggle and from the truster) and if you put all the thrusters at the top (apparently you can put multiple thrusters in the same space with some glich). I'm guessing it will keep it straight bc the bottom is like pulling the bottom down and tighten the string. idk

What about a reverse rocket at the end with a lower power? It should strecth the tail, but not strong enough to stop rocket.

You're gonna need a decoupler, yes. You can add to heat shield to the staging, but that will just separate the heat shield from the capsule it's protecting. It's not for separating the heat shield from the stack below it.

You need to keep an eye on center of mass, lift, and thrust, there’s a button to show them. Pretty sure that if you have those right, you can fly any weird thing.

You just want the engines on top and the fuel below them. In theory (without the wobble) it's more stable than a regular rocket design since the thrust is pulling Fins at (Center of lift) at the bottom, thrust at the top, center of mass in between

Put a smaller set of engines facing upward at the very bottom. Should keep the tail a bit more under control. Possibly some reaction wheels along the body as well. Very cool videos btw. Keep up the content!

in an alternate dimension, snakes are using the wiggle to get the machine to spin, so it corkscrews into space, to get their long boy rocket into space

Try using struts along the length. If you connect lower parts to some much higher parts. Not sure what would be the best interval. You can probably add more rigidity.

The Kraken in KSP is when the physics engine bugs out and destroys craft for no reason. (most often affects large and/or complex and/or landed craft). _Your_ snake-rockets are _understandably_ cursed. :D Also they're just wobbling around because of compounding flexibility in each of the joints, coupled with a rather silly number of parts. :)

Little tip, solid fuel boosters use their own fuel and can't use liquid fuel, so you may be able to empty the massive fuel takes to reduce the weight, might make it get lift

you were also still in Snap mode for editing. if you swap it to free (the circle vs the hexagon shape) you can REALLY fine tune the spin factor lol

Hmm perhaps take thrusters off the bottom quarter of the snake design if it ends up wiggling like a tail. Also remove all the fins except for the bottom quarter? Could you make a pyramid out of boosters?

the wiggle is not the kraken, this phenomenon specifically is called bendytech (used often for hinges)

"The Kraken" is basically just a name for any glitch in ksp, you can't build it. However, there is an easter egg of a caged squid monster that's also called the kraken.

if you want it to get into space or orbit, then i advise you check you're deltaV ( should be the number in the blue thing next to the stage shown as m/s and the one bellow all stages in the orange thing), about 3500m/s of DV should get you to orbit.

when u rotated the engines since the fins werent rotated they created drag, whitch prevented spinning a bit and decreased stability. (atleast im pretty sure that decreases stability) and also im pretty sure thats y it was all corkscrew-y

Right clicking on the heat shield shows an option to Detach it. That happens to also detach anything the heatshield is attached to. Also, I believe you just validated the possible existence of the god Quetzalcoatl :)

im almost 100% sure the wiggling is not because of the kraken, but because its essentially a multi layered pendulum. Put a really heavy weight at the bottom of the dragon

The rockets all the way at the top is carrying more load. The rockets further and further down carry less and less load, which means the rockets further down are going faster than the rockets further up causing the rockets to go to the sides and hence the wobbling. Try to put all the rockets at the top and none further down.

use SAS, press T before you launch and the engines, wings, and reaction wheels will try their best to stabilize your ship.

theres a shortcut to eva. just hover you mouse over the little kerbal at the bottom right and you should see eva. oh and also if go to settings in the main menu you can enable auto struting and then auto strut is basicly making rockets stable so you can spend 20 hours right clicking every part and enabling auto strut on them you wont have any wobbles

if you want it to spin properly, you have to rotate the fins as well because you're creating a lot of resistance

With the way ksp works, spinning just causes more problems, its best to avoid fast spins as much as possible.

The thrusters only draw fuel from above so if u have a thruster and a single fuel tank aboe it it doesnt matter if u add a million fuel tanks under it will only take from the one above the spin and tailfins cant work together but u can rotate the fins instead of thruster to get a much more gentle spin to make this work you need either a fuel mod which allows you to modify how much fuel a single tank has or you need to use super light meterials at the top and slowly increase the weight as u go down

well the fuel thing i think im not sure but it makes the most sience couse otherwise you would need pipes inside the fuel tanks which would be a waste of space but if my theory is wrong i doubt the game went into that much detail

The rocket has to be in tension at all times. That means the highest thrust at the top and declining thrust going down the rocket. Uniform engine use down the rocket encourages bending.

One tower in the middle with 4 decoupler symmetry all the way down and four towers around the center tower on the decouplers

Place a rock at the very bottom stable it by creating a A pull up system to pull the rocket up when the rocket is out of fuel to make it shorter so it doesn’t spin or why the rocket on

Simple fix to the snake design would definitely be to only have a couple of rockets at the top of the snake and some stabilization at the bottom with a heavy booster at the bottom.

The Kraken was already in your game, it lives on a small moon out by the green planet Jool if I remember. It has magical powers, that you've already experienced, to cause physics to glitch out, anywhere in the system.

Fuel lines yellow tubes will transfer fuel from one tank to another if they aren't directly connected.

In theory this could be addressed by adjusting control loops to actively stabilize it, no idea if that's a thing doable in Kerbal....

Try turning off the snap mode and turning the thrusters just a veeeeeery tiny bit Edit: also use the cupola module instead of the normal capsule for a beautiful internal view as you watch your rocket cut utself into pieces

You forgot to do the offsetting thingy where the rockets are like doing a pattern, and maybe to the wings.

I wonder if you staged it so that the rockets turn on one at a time top to bottom if it would fix the wiggle? It would basically cause it to stretch a little and the bottom ones won't be able to "catch up" enough to create the slack required for wiggle.
