09:35 Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously, Nobody Will Make It Out Alive
A little over a year ago, I had a very close call on the highway that made me evaluate my life and how I was spending my money. In this video, I want to share five different lesson that came from that experience.
1. Don’t Use Money In Extremes
We often live our lives in extremes which can make us very emotional and aggressive. When it comes to money, we often live in these extremes where we are extremely materialistic and obsess over consumerism or we are extremely cheap and deprive ourselves. Neither one of these extremes is a healthy way to live because they are not a life of balance. When it comes to money, I find it important to find the balance of the two extremes, which I believe is being intentional, focusing on value, and not being wasteful. This allows you to enjoy the short term while not hurting your future self.
2. Use Money As A Tool To Enrich Your Life
Money by itself does nothing, but it is what you do with money that brings value to your life. It is important to have savings and be financially responsible; however, it is also important to use money to enrich your life. You never know what is going to happen in life, so it is important to actively use your money to make your life better, otherwise it might never end up serving you.
3. While You’re Here, You Might As Well Take Chances
We often focus on the long term in life and delay doing things in the present for the hopes that the future will be easier; however, you never know what is going to happen in life. If you live your life like you're guaranteed to live to old age, then you are taking life for granted. Although we shouldn't take dumb risks in life, it is important to not take life for granted and take chances so you never have to say what if.
4. Collect As Many Experiences As Early On As You Can
In the book, "Die With Zero," the author speaks about this concept called, "Memory Dividends," which are the memories that you get from having an experience to reminisce on throughout your life. The author argues that you shouldn't delay experiences in life because the sooner you get them, the more time you can enjoy the memories of that experience. You never know what is going to happen in life, so you should focus on getting experiences early on rather than delaying them.
5. Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously, Nobody Will Make It Out Alive
The near death experience on the highway taught me that you're not guaranteed to make it to old age. It is important to take risks, do things you enjoy, and live life to the fullest because you never know what is going to happen in life. And above all we shouldn't take ourselves too seriously because, in the end, the superficial things like money and stuff don't matter.

I have had two near death experiences (1992 & 2022). Both have impacted my life. There are still a few things I want to do 1. Actually see Lake Louise and Moraine lake in Alberta, Canada. I have been there twice and wasn't able to see the actual lakes. 2. Witness the aurora borealis.3. See a moose in the wild. I might be able to fill 2 &3 if I take a road trip to the Yukon.

Happened to me … last year at night a tire from an 18 wheeler flew through the air directly at the front of my car. In the last fraction of a second, I instinctively cut the wheel to the left .. instead of slamming into me it scraped along the passenger side of my car. It was a wake up call. Now I’m on a month-long vacation in Argentina - not delaying living my life…

My beautiful daughter passed away 3 months ago, she was a perfectly healthy girl, she had a bleed on her brain that took her in one hour, and all of a sudden she was gone, just like that, thankfully she didnt want possessions but experiences so she lived and did alot, to say i am heartbroken is a under statement of the year. i am still in so much shock. We like to think the future is always better, i will do it next year i will sort this out in a couple of years and so on, sacrificing the keep it all together will wsomehow assure all will be ok next year etc, nothing will bring my daughter back, so glad to learn that i need to live my life and stop all this procrastinating for the years to come, some one i know is always going too and now he has stage 4 cancer, and still putting things off. I want to be a wise steward of my money and life.

I love your video Austin. I lost my parents at 49 and 53, so I know early on that life is definitly finite. What’s most important definitely are our relationships and experiences we have when we get to the end of our days. My husband and I were driving home in a storm. It had rained all day. We both just wanted to go home. My sixth sense kicked in. I told him I want to grab a bite to eat. He said no. I'm tired. Let's go! So we did. This was right after Thanksgiving. We were just a few miles from home. I saw something weird in the highway. I slowed down to try to see better. Decoration? No! Naked woman! I slammed on my brakes and hit her. She died minutes later. My brain went into shock. My husband called 911. He was there when she died. I was sitting in the car in shock. Eventually I'll come out of that shock. They call it PTSD. She and her boyfriend had been drinking all day. He never came outside to see what happened. A piece of me died that day...my emotions. Nothing surprises me anymore. I rarely leave my house because the world has gone crazy. Im already there. Please stop trying to join me.

The flashbacks are less so, but they are still there. Thank you for your support. I truly do appreciate it, but PTSD is caused by violence that the brain cannot comprehend. I've had counseling and I take meds to help but I'm stuck with this until my brain decides it understands, and that may take the rest of my life.

Update on my nanny job: I honestly told the family it was too many hours for me and too much work and they ended up offering me a super flexible job with as many hours as I wish and the work has lessened a lot. They even invited me to their house in Germany for as much time as I like until they move here 😂 I think I'll take on this adventure with the rich people who knows what I'll learn. My brother died when I was in my 20s and he was a compulsive saver and worrier. I learned the lesson and took an international trip (like one month a year) after that. I share your views, I'm frugal day to day, and despite my extravagant vacations I still have a home paid off now that I'm in my 50s. Actually, two homes. And I earn far below average. Little by little pays off; if you're still young don't give up. It helps to move to a lower COL place, I'll say that much.

This makes me think of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. What makes it (potentially) risky to focus on higher-level needs (like self-actualization) while we're young, is that we also have to provide for our more basic needs: shelter, food, a sense of security. So yes, we need to strike a balance between these two: take risks, but well-informed, calculated ones. Part of this is trusting that even if risky choices don't turn out as you'd hoped, you'll still be able to take care of the fundamentals (i.e., you won't end up living in a tent). Excellent video as always, Austin!

True. Balance is essential. You must also enjoy while you're alive (and young) as much as possible while still preparing for the future somehow by not spending it all. I know the "trend" now is to value experiences over things but things give you experiences on a recurring basis, if you chose those wisely (good furniture, clothing items, appliances etc). Try to be as mindful as possible with your own choices because it's your life, nobody else's (even if we're just "government's subjects").

Wealthy people are usually generational wealth or business owners.. the average Joe doesn’t have a pile of cash. Most are two paychecks from homeless Maybe a better message is so the things you want in life and start checking off those bucket list items ( however you can afford to go after the goal ). Some it might be camping in NZ. Some it might be 5 star hotels in NZ. Regardless I’ve found it’s not resources that are limited. It’s resourcefulness..

A man traveling across a field encountered a tiger. He fled, the tiger after him. Coming to a precipice, he caught hold of the root of a wild vine and swung himself down over the edge. The tiger sniffed at him from above. Trembling, the man looked down to where, far below, another tiger was waiting to eat him. Only the vine sustained him. Two mice, one white and one black, little by little started to gnaw away at the vine. The man saw a luscious strawberry near him. Grasping the vine with one hand, he plucked the strawberry with the other. How sweet it tasted! -zen parable

I didn't know it but my early 20's son heard the disruption in the bathroom and checked on me. I woke up with medics all around. Now I have been blessed with amazing heart surgeons. I make extra money doing side gigs and I've been living it up doing things like camping and hiking like crazy. I appreciate the seriousness of this video. There's a wise book that says we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can take nothing out. It's therefore important to use money with wisdom during this short life on earth. Wisdom acknowledges that helping people with money is one of the most enriching investments one can make. Thanks Austin.

Yes. We used to say, “Everything in moderation.” In the 1970s, a Christian writer, Charlie Shedd, suggested “Give 10%, save 10%, and spend the rest with thanksgiving and joy.” I don’t think he meant that as a rigid rule; it isn’t a bad guideline, though, is it.

Last year I had a breast cancer scare. I took 4 imaging tests and they still were inconclusive so I had to go for a biopsy. I was terrified for 3 whole months. That’s when I had my epiphany. None of these material things matter. I can only be buried in one outfit. I’m no longer working to buy “things” but to buy “freedom.” Thank God the biopsy was negative but the experience did a lot to change my perspective on life and money.

This video is very inspiring. I've been in many near death situations but always took life for granted. I grew up being a miser but over the years I've been better in learning how to spend money for my pleasure. I have no debt and have accumulated a nice savings but I am so scared to take risks due to poor investments I made when I was younger and less educated about how to invest properly. The trauma has made me paralyzed even though I am better informed now and even work for a wealth management division for a bank. I do agree that we always live in extremes and life is about finding balance which I truly believe. Also thank you for the encouragement of taking risks because when I die it doesn't matter. I am so restricted in my investment and approaching people I am romantically interested in because I am afraid of risks but now I think I would care less about outcomes as long as I did my best and approached the situation with the right mind set. I also like how you were able to awaken to the true purpose of money as a tool which is useless if it has no usage.

Great wisdom, Austin. I like your analogy about hammers. I'm trying not to worship acquiring hammers for hammers sake!

This is the strangest thing, just this morning I was thinking about a carpenter I know who once said to me that money is evil, this was years ago, he had very little of it, and at the time I had no response. The strange part is that just this morning I got thinking about it and realized that my response should have been 'money is a tool just as your hammer and screwdrivers are your tools'. And then here your video pops up... It's not as though the I may have seen the title and that got me thinking, your title is nothing to do with money being a tool. So strange. BTW, scary beginning about the car going the wrong way, wow.

I didn't! I was in such a state of shock that I couldn't comprehend what happened! It makes you understand when you hear those stories of bad things happening to people, but it doesn't phase them in the moment because they can't comprehend it.

It’s a very good point. Without using money enrich your life , money is just papers or numbers. It’s a tragedy if you are in the heaven but your money in the bank😂

Except, sometimes you may have devote the time to direct one's financial reality, and yes devote multiple years to living a pauper existence. I'm in year 8, and may have to go into years 9 and 10, and do what is necessary to direct my life to what I desire.
