I Almost Died Today. Twice

The past few days in N'Djamena, Chad have been the worst days of my entire life and I've had a miserable time here. Never in my life have I been more scared, threatened, or attacked (both verbally and physically) than in this hot, dusty, beaten-down deserted city. I was in a disastrous police chase on a motorbike and I also was attacked by a dozen people for taking 1 photo inside a minibus. I apologize for the lack of posting lately - I've had no access to wifi until now and I'm still shaken up by what has happened to me.
If it wasn't for my 6'6'' local friend (AKA Bodyguard), then I'm not sure I'd be alive right now. This is not a joke, this is serious.
The lesson learned has been learned on my end to always ask before taking a photo of anyone, but it was uncalled for these people to attack me as they did. I will end this post by saying that I do not hate Chad (as a whole) and I realize that unlucky situations can make or break your experience in any country. But it's safe to say that I will not be coming back to Chad anytime soon.
What's the worst thing that's happened to you on the road? Please share your stories below

hey drew I'm from South Africa and there are a lot of cases of children and women being kidnaped by foreigners from Europe so in my view taking a picture of a child triggered them thinking u potentially want to kidnap the child and sell the Childs organs wherever you in Africa don take a Childs picture without permission . even now its still happening
@charleyjr.iriarte7428
@charleyjr.iriarte7428 2 года назад
What do you expect to see from a traveler´s video? Videos showing no faces of people? What do you expect to see on his RU-vid channel? Would he care more for the animals in Africa than the actual children there? You must understand that Europe is going down because of their stupid attitudes, and they used to be more grateful about taking pictures. Balance! About taking pictures, people should know how to balance things out. Being excessively violent is never the right thing. Talk. Tell people to calm down if they are offended.
@MzansiStoriesOfficial
@MzansiStoriesOfficial 2 года назад
@@charleyjr.iriarte7428 if you never been in Africa you will not understand what im talking about and if you never had family members kidnapped killed put in boxes or have missing body organs then u will not understand i think there in Europe you have a thing called concent if im not wrong . Would u keep quiet if a random person starts taking multiple pictures of you without you knowing or acknowledging you about it ? If so then we are wrong but if you find it uncomfortable then u have to fix your statement and open your eyes

@@MzansiStoriesOfficial, Not me! Though I like your answer, people should be careful about using their hands too quickly. It is not a good thing. Especially when someone is already surrounded by people who are not like him, they shouldn´t fear to talk before using their hands. Everyone can be violent and ruthless. However, if it becomes your culture to be impulsive, then don´t let tourists come to your country at all. Not everyone is perfect. Or tell everyone before entering the country. (Too many rules in my opinion.) Even I want to visit your country, but why so impulsive toward a small helpless white guy inside a bus -- who is among big and strong Africans? Just encourage your people to be CAREFUL and be WISE!? Because the Europeans can go berserk. Only God and be it only God Almighty who does harm! Not an unreasonable man! Claiming to be super special for NO reason -- above his beautiful white brother!? Don´t say because of kidnapping because I smell a bad odor attitude -- which is mainly against white people. If it were not for some of your kind and outstanding souls in Chad, Drew would have been imprisoned or badly injured. (I don´t think that God will let him die because of taking a picture of a little child as he mentioned. His time of death won´t be there. I refuse it in my heart.) Just without reason. The white guy probably cared more about the child to promote how adorable the child -- as he could be one day. Not to say that Chad can become a great country by beauty, but the child can be so adhering without being generalized in any way. I don´t mind my picture as you can see in my google account. If anything, help your people see us. We are the ones coming to see you. See us also! Maybe it will help to reduce the risk of kidnapping when you make new friends. Our brother Drew can raise awareness for you and your country. Who knows? Bless. And if nothing, the air is heavy.

@@romancorey6796 Totally. Besides being able to efficiently control their people with Juche, the goverment uses his reputation of being totalitarian to make a lot of money with tourism, as long as the tourists don't spread new political and religious ideas among the people.
@harshmnr
@harshmnr 4 года назад
Before you read below, please remember this first: Even though tourists can go to North Korea and many say they have a good time, we shouldn't go there as it could be dangerous especially for people who come from countries that are North Korea's "enemies" (for example, I've heard that a guy from America was kidnapped) and also because visiting there means giving the government more money, and giving them money means continuing to support their regime that denies their citizens' human rights, so I'm of the opinion that we should oppose it as much as possible. From what I've heard, visitors are only allowed to go to Pyongyang and it looks super normal and happy and tourist-friendly (although people say there's something slightly off about how there's so many modern-looking buildings but barely any people to fill them and stuff like that), but if you go to other parts of the country you'll see that most of the citizens are living in poverty, there's concentration camps, etc. So it's basically like in Pyongyang they're trying to make themselves look like a "normal" country but it's all just a disguise, that kind of thing. (Again, this is all just from what I've heard.) ~:~
@universalis6239
@universalis6239 4 года назад
@@harshmnrI know and I agree with everything you said. If you want to know more check out 'In Order to Live' by the North Korean defector and human rights activist Yeonmi Park and Blaine Harden 's 'Escape from Camp 14' which is the official biography of Shin Dong-hyuk , who was born inside Kaechon internment camp and today is also a human rights activist. There's also the documentary 'The Propaganda Game' available on Netflix which focuses more on the propaganda the goverment meticulously does to hide the reality from the tourists. Believe it or not, the situation in Cuba is even worse than in North Korea, because it's much harder to try to escape from an island than from a peninsula. Since their wages can afford food for only 10 days roughly, about 10% of the entire Cuban population tried to escape from the island by sailing on anything that could float, taking the risk of being eaten alive by sharks. Many have died trying to reach the United States and those who survived through this hell will tell you how Cuba isn't that tourism paradise for its own people. Unfortunately there are few sources regarding the situation in Cuba and those I know are only available in Spanish or in Portuguese.

So let me get this straight, you are carrying around a camera in a country you know has a severe dislike of being filmed and you are surprised that people are rude to you? You seemed to get the message in North Korea that dissing the glorious leader was a no no. Why then does it seem so difficult to grasp that these people hate being filmed and that you should put the camera away? Filming people without their consent is generally considered an invasion of privacy, even in western countries. I live in Canada, and I have seen people become threatening and violent for this exact reason. Like the dude who punched a guy who was filming him on a public bus in the afternoon, and then got off the bus.

@Gladiolus Marigold I’d never threaten someone with a knife, but I’d also never take pictures of kids in my own country, definitely not in other countries and cultures. A lot of tourists forget about people’s rights when visiting other countries, and although I don’t agree with violence, I don’t see anyone correct in this story. I lived several years in Chad and love, love, loved it. Yes, there is corruption and yes there may be insect invasions, and yes the temperature and dust can feel unbearable at times, but the general population endures these things to the nth degree more than you ever did in your three day visit. Also, you can't just prance into a culture and country you have absolutely 0 experience with and be surprised when your cultural ignorance leads you to make a faux pas. As for Chad, I miss my friends/honorary family there so much. There is so much more to the culture and country than you experienced and I pity you for that. Chad has tourist attractions such as Zakouma (a national park- been there twice), Elephant Rock (been there), on-foot Elephant safaris if you're there during the right season (did that too), and apparently even a museum (I never went). So I'm sorry you had such an awful experience, but I'm even more sorry you missed out on experiencing the beauty Chad would have had to offer you; I wish you could have enjoyed your time there as much as I did.

CHAD it's a great place! Just be aware about local culture, like anywhere else around the world, and, I know, I know, people may say things about the opposite. Just remember, every conqueror, faced the same things and they did awful things. We as travelers are suposed to show the local cultures with all the proper respect.

Those Islamic countries in Africa (emphasising on sub saharan Africa) are the worst of the continent - poor, hostile, arid, dirty, intolerant, impoverished shitholes where the practices of fgm and child marriage are prevalent, as well as the control and subjugation of women, the stoning of gays, the execution of infidels and the extremely high birth rates of woman....oh yeah, not to mention the present day slavery that still exists in several of these countries such as Mali, Mauritania and Niger for example. I especially feel sorry for the children of these countries, where they are subjected to a life of harshness, monotonous labour and very little freedom, which will unlikely change and continue repeating itself.

I lived in Chad as a kid in the late 80s. It was after the civil war when Hissan Habre was president. The one story that I heard was that a van full of nuns made the wrong turn into the gates of the presidential palace. They were shot up. For the most part, at least back in the late 80s, Chadians weren't use to getting their pictures taken. They had a superstition that it was like the soul was being stolen. Not all people reacted negatively to having their pictures taken. The worst experience I had was catching Malaria, but overall, it was a good experience.
