Have you ever heard of Slab City, in Southern California? It's an experimental town of about 300 outcasts who live without running water or electricity in the middle of the harsh desert. I first heard about Slab City when my friends Yes Theory went 6 years ago, and it's been on my list ever since then... So I finally decided to go, alone, and I couldn't believe what I saw.
Join me as I take you on a journey through the heart of this extraordinary off-grid community, shedding light on its unique culture, art, and unconventional way of life that thrives in the remnants of an abandoned military base, known as the 'Last Free Place on Earth.'
Whether you're a backpacker or simply curious about this unique corner of the world, this story will provide an authentic look at what it's really like to visit Slab City.

This video is a different approach to my normal style of storytelling. It’s way more raw (shot only on gopro and iPhone) - and I’d love to get feedback from you! Do you prefer this style? Or the more cinematic, high production value with Sony cameras and gimbles? Thank you - your feedback means a lot to me!

For a story like this, the "raw" type of recording is absolutely perfect. If you were highlighting majestic vistas or magnificent feats of human art/engineering, that is when the high tech equipment should be used.

Whoever is reading this, I wanted to say I hope you have a great day and that God loves you so much that He sent His son, Jesus, to die on a cross for your sins and He rose again from the dead three days later. God Bless! And also, He doesn't want you to go to Hell, but He wants you to go to Heaven with Him but you have to be Saved. How do I get Saved you might ask? Here are the steps below on how to get Saved! 1. Believe that God sent His Son (Jesus) to die on a cross for your sins and that He rose again from the dead 3 days later. 2. Confess to Jesus that you are a sinner and ask forgiveness for your sins and Turn away from your sins. If you sin again after asking forgiveness of that sin, ask forgiveness again and try not to do it ever again. Jesus will forgive you! 3. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and your life and for Him to be your Lord and Savior forever. 4. I work with the homeless a lot. Often, the true homeless aren't homeless at all They just choose to live outside what we call "normal" in society. They want to live by their own rules and not conform. Slab City is a perfect place for that. It's just sad that the drugs and mental illness follow this group wherever they tend to go. Awesome video.

I’d say Slab City and places like it are both a blessing and a curse. People often come here to escape for some reason but if they can’t withstand the harsh conditions then they just find themselves suffering still. Still, it’s heartwarming that there are so many nice people in a “lawless” place like this, and that they are willing to help each other rather than steal and envy one another.

the young generation escape responsibilities and just want to party and use drugs there. Look how the environment looks like, so much dirt laying there around then you can already see a lack of discipline. They could try to dig holes to get water and try to create a greener environment.
@CalamityAmberAuraOracle
@CalamityAmberAuraOracle 5 месяцев назад
@lemmykoopa1379 life is different if one has to ensure their basic needs everyday. Walking 3 miles to get 2 gallons of H20 takes 3 hrs. Now a majority has watermarks, but they still have to ensure there's enough power, gas for groceries or funds to overpay a "Slab Cab" e.g. 75 to El Centro, per person not per shared ride. I agree there could be a collective approach of ensuring the uncovered ground is covered with desert plants to lower the overall temperature and prevent the rapid erosion, flooding and fires spreading too fast. But ultimately people are surviving and also have little desire to do anything large nor long-term to help overall life quality be at least minimumly covers the basic needs for everyone. Thats kind of normal in every community. Essential for survival. They don't want everyone to survive, there's a cut throat environment where they go lengths to cut others of from basic needs.
@CalamityAmberAuraOracle

The documentaries are misleading, why would they have a heroin dealing person guide the presenter. Only in Slab City are the killing dealers hailed as heroes. Or Bob from the hostel assaults women [allegedly] every chance he gets, he's portrayed as some messiah in Rick the Rangers recent documentary. Same as Peter in Carlos Durans Slab TV, he's well known as an alleged rapist, but portrayed as a victim whose window was broken. By one of his alleged rape victims. Not everyone has such extreme backgrounds, but those volunteering to guide around folks are hard working folks, not always in the most ethical way. We just don't get to share that, because everyone is so impressed by them being nice on camera. That's their MO, thats why they're surviving well as the main dealer. Whom is needed. Dont get me wrong. People are truly suffering. And drug use can be considered self-medicating. And so Beryl is truly appreciated by most, but let's not forget that it kills tons of people and they're never accountable, just heroes on RU-vid, that's all they need to keep going

@@lemmykoopa1379 I frequently stay in Brawley, pretending I am welcome in Slabs, and promise to start community programs while worn out my welcome. It's rent free, not free of a social dynamic that rules everything and everyone. If I speak up about it, I receive more scrutiny and violence. They have to present it as a great amazing community so the tourists continue to visit and contribute some donations. But it ultimately enables the residents and there is no normal constructive conversation to be held without being socially banned, physically harmed or even burned out for trying to address issues like safety standards when building camps. Allowing people without a tank to get more than 2 gallons/day so there's a little but more time to spend on food, gas or solar power matters, because that would have those with watertanks significantly lose power. Everything is measurable here and controllable. But if one tries to address it, even offers to PAY for community water, its a social avalanche of women ensuring that some they don't deem welcome to ban them and make all relationships and resources inaccessible. Burning each other out is just one method to assert their power. There are many more ways that a few are holding. It's sad, there's much more potential. It's also discerning that this is the best a group of self governing individuals can do together. The documentaries are way to idolized, which will allow tourists to come. Reality is truly he'll for those that have no RV. Segregation and disparity is huge here, and its easy to blame it on drug usage or mental health issues, it's just a destructive social structure that's vile to those perceived as the weakest. But they are all leeching, asking for donations, like parasitic pretentious messiahs . It's pretty gross all around to be honest that social structure of power. Sorry not sorry 🙏

Amazing that you managed to get in there and film. I've wondered what it was really like. Definitely some characters around there. Interesting that Into the Wild is your favorite movie. In 1992 I was going to university in Juneau, Alaska. The previous year I'd spent at UAF in Fairbanks. I worked in Denali Park in the summer of '91 and had another job lined up there in '92. School ended in early May, so I left Juneau, took a ferry to Haines and then hitchhiked through Canada and back into Alaska to Denali Park. This was about a week after Chris McCandless had hitchhiked part of the same route. I worked through the summer in Denali and sometime in August heard about a guy who had died outside the park. I had a subscription to Outside magazine, and a few months later got the magazine in the mail with the article that Jon Krakauer had written about what happened to Chris. It really blew me away to hear the back story of this guy who we'd only heard a shred of information about when I was working up there. Crazy story, but I can certainly identify with his quest for something other than the mainstream way of living.

@drewbinsky I REALLY enjoyed this style of filming! Plus it is easier to "get the sneak" if needed, which it kind of looked like you did with Builder Bob there at first. All of the artwork from the beginning of the video and at the end where you were given a tour of sorts, was phenominal!

I seen a video on slab city about 2 years ago, I actually forgot about it until your video popped up, as I follow you. Thank you for sharing, it is a place I have no desire to visit due. To the heat. The people seem pretty nice. I go to the Florida Keys in August, it was 117 degrees with the heat index. So I know I couldn't deal with 118 degree.

"What it's really like" sounds like it's far more harsh than this video. I find that disappointing seeing how the videos of African and Caribbean nations show the full harshness and danger. I'd hoped this vlog wasn't white-washed. Sounds like it likely is biased towards eurocentric expectations rather than bare-faced reality. Not hating, ijs...

I have watched a lot of videos about the slabs before and I feel like this video barely scratched the surface. Maybe do a return video for wintertime when the slabs are at peak population? I think places like this will exist no matter what, especially with the rising cost of living. People have lived out there for a long time by choice, but more and more will be in that situation because they are without a choice.

Slab City is not lawless even if the police tend to avoid it. It is also not really off the grid. It is very much connected to the nation's road network. It is also served by the Imperial County Sheriff's Department and the Niland Fire Department…only the residents don't pay taxes for those services
@alonawhalen
@alonawhalen 6 месяцев назад
The majority of Slabbers who have electricity, use generators. There is a gas tax in California that is about 50% of the per gallon cost. If you look at the reason that tax is being collected and how the money from that tax is disbursed you will find that Local emergency services and first responders are listed as the primary benefactors of that tax. I constantly dare people to go to our Gas Station and say that we are Slabbers and we don't pay taxes so take that gas tax off our bill. Unfortunately, people love electricity way more than getting banned from the gas station. With that said as a result of the high gas prices, Gov. Newsom gave a type of stimulus called the middle class tax rebate. I have not talked to any Slabbers that got this refund.

FFS, doesn't anyone ever have an original idea? Slab City is not a lawless city. As Ken himself points out, there are laws, and the cops come around daily to enforce those laws. Not to mention, it has unwritten laws enforced by the community itself, often with arson. Visiting Salvation Mountain for a day does not make you a badass survivor. These kind of videos really are irresponsible and give people the wrong idea.

When I was in the Army we used to train at Ft Irwin - about two hours north of Slab City. The Mojave Desert is some of the harshest, most unforgiving climate and landscape in the world. You could literally drink two gallons of water a day and still feel dehydrated. I don’t see how these folks do it.

I super like this style, its perfect for a video like this where the story is more on the people than the place... It makes it feel even more intimate, or like I am really there up close with the people you are talking to. I love your more theatrical style too, so much so that I am now going to fanboy for just a minute. You are my Favorite Drew Binsky! I have left the country 3 times, but each time I have gone to Central/South America (Starting point is an amazing festival called Envision in Costa Rica every February, you should check out someday) and then countries around Costa Rica, like a Island off of Nicaragua called Ometepe, which is awesome and incredibly cheap. I am now saving up and will someday soon be heading to Europe/ Asia/ the middle east, and It is because of your show that I can say that. Before discovering your channel, I was really only interested in travelling to Europe's "main" countries like Spain, Germany, France, Italy and the UK, which don't get me wrong, I am still going to those countries. It is just that after watching this channel, I have added countries like Turkey, Afghanistan, Israel, Tokyo, the Philippines, well, various parts of Asia and the Middle East that were just not on my radar before. Then after that Africa and possibly Antarctica. So, ya, thank you so much for sharing your journey, for breaking down barriers and stereotypes, and for traveling anywhere and everywhere with an open mind and open heart, and for representing America in a respectful and positive way while doing so! I cannot wait to see where you go next!
