Definitely one of the scariest moments of my life. Colombia is an amazing country, but it does come with many more risks than the average tourist destination. I made this video to be fully transparent of the dangers that possibly come with going here and my personal experience. Overall I've had a great time so far in the country, but this was a terrible experience to go through. Santa Marta is a popular destination for tourists, but just like any of the major cities in the country, there are certain precautions you should take and I hope my story will be helpful for you before considering coming here.

SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads): safetywing.com?referenceID=alinamcleod&Ambassador
I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. Even as a Colombian, I wouldn't go to lonely, isolated places by myself as I'd be exposing myself to crime. As a blonde, foreign and attractive woman, you stand out more from the crowd, so take precautions and travel in a group or accompanied by a local. Look at this as a positive thing, as a lesson in life that may never happen again as you are now wiser.

Great job explaining things in a straightforward way. I had to explain this concept to my nephew who didn't understand the reason he needed to not wear any jewelry, even though his watch was worth only fifty dollars [which isn't small money, but that's considered inexpensive for a watch]. I explained to him that in many places they don't have access to they type of economic opportunity to make whatever they'd be able to sell his watch or jewelry for. US citizens come from a country deeply rooted in economic opportunity, so we relate to things in a way that we don't place value on things unless they're expensive to us. We also take our safety for granted. Some people do crime out of necessity. They might not have a choice... It's important to respect that fact of life and respect people boundaries. There are areas in the US where the same things could happen...

People go "on vacation" out of the country and for some reason do things they'd think twice about doing in most (if not all) places (esp big cities) in their own countries. Assuming she's from the US, you don't go randomly walking down streets/roads in directions you don't know. A couple blocks in the wrong direction from the city centers in NY, CHI, STL, LA, etc. etc. and you are in places you are not safe. You may end up "fine", but your odds of being a victim are increased incredibly. Been to Colombia many many times...even the beach she's describing...and it's exactly the same there BUT now you stand out (just like you said) and you aren't good with the language either. Be careful, know your surroundings, watch the behavior of others for signals, don't "meet up" with random strangers, etc. etc. EVERYWHERE you go in the whole world including your home country. It's just being rational.

I went to Cartagena and Santa Marta for the first time 30 years ago. While most Colombian are super nice friendly and helpful and while Colombia is now much safer, it is still a "wild" country. I felt super safe in Cartagena. It was like a Colombian but the day I quit, the army was everywhere. I adventured myself out of the gringo trail in Cienaga. I ask my at my hotel until what time it was safe. I went out after sunset only to buy some food at the grocery next door. There were grids everywhere. I met people from Bogota who told me they never really feel safe in their own city. Colombia is much safer than it was 20 or 30 years ago, but it is not Europe or South East Asia.

Fairly often people would warn me not to go to certain places, and ask me if I needed help. Overall Colombian people are amazingly kind and welcoming, but because of poverty, lack of jobs, and drugs, some people turn to violence and crime. I would advise you to travel with a local guide. December 31, after midnight I went to bed and discovered your RU-vid channel. As a Colombian I was amazed that an English speaker was showing my country on this great platform. I saw your videos from "Learning Spanish" to the "Rosario Islands" and I couldn't be more proud to see everything that your camera was capturing. I have lived for six years out of Colombia and I know first hand the impressions that foreigners have about traveling to my country. We Colombians are so proud of our land and we are in a constant struggle to show our country in the best possible way. As soon as I saw your Instagram stories about an incident I felt very stressed. I'm devastated with this video. I really feel very sorry for you and I know that this experience will mark you forever and it's a shame that it's so. It's not fair that a large mass of people fight daily for a better country, that we have the opportunity on your amazing channel to show people from other cultures what we have to offer and that suddenly something like this has happened to you. It breaks my soul to hear your fear about this experience, and I would give anything for you to didn't have to go through this. But it's a reality that is still latent unfortunately, and I didn't fully understand it until I came to live in Europe. The tranquility of going down the street without having to be aware of your surroundings for the danger to which you may be exposed is priceless. The tranquility is invaluable and unfortunately we lack a lot of tranquility so that by joining our magnificent tourist offer we can become a true paradise. I hope that one day it will be, and I am very disappointed, it's like if we take several steps back when you tell your story to the world but it doesn't mean that I don't support you. Thank you very much for choosing Colombia. Thank you very much for also showing how beautiful there is in our country. She was a Korean girl, taking a walk at 8 pm in a very dangerous and beautiful area, where I used to go to get high, when I saw her I immediately walked her back to a safer place, she had no idea, after I walked her to a Mall, I told her about the place she was, she freaked out and decided to go back to her Hotel, I think I also scared her, but she got lucky... As a Colombian my suggestion would be to ask before doing something or going somewhere which is not a usual tourist destination. Ask who? Someone in the front desk of the hotel, for example, or a policeman. Colombians generally know where there may be trouble. This is especially true in or near cities. Many rural areas are safe and you wouldn't have to ask, but in cities it's different.

I’m so sorry to hear this happened to you. I’m a Colombian, US raised female, and I don’t feel comfortable traveling throughout Colombia unless I’m with a larger group of people or traveling with my family members that live in Colombia and know their way around. You must keep in mind you are traveling through a 3rd world country that has deep economic and political struggles, and it’s quite new to receiving the level of tourists it’s receiving now. Many people in Colombia, including my own family, deeply struggle economically to put food on the table. So you must understand, as difficult as it may be, accept that you are putting yourself at risk traveling alone as a female, exposing expensive gadgets, that does not speak the language. What happened to you is horrible, but let me say it happens a lot. My own family have been mugged or held up at gun point plenty of times in Colombia. There are bad apples everywhere, and sorry you were targeted by one of them. I lead yoga retreats down in Colombia, and I bring groups of 20-30 people down at a time, and this is the advise I share with them which I’ll share with you: 1. Don’t flaunt your phones or gadgets when we’re walking around town 2. Walk around in groups, woman never walk alone. 3. Learn basic Spanish, most people do not speak English. This isn’t Mexico or Costa Rica! 4. Be aware that you are in a country with desperate people, so act, and dress accordingly (leave your expensive items at home). 5. Be respectful of cultural norms 6. Do not solicit drugs 7. Know exactly where you are going to avoid pulling out your phone for directions on the street. If you must pull your phone out, be in a group of people or go inside a restaurant or place where there are plenty of people. 8. Avoid traveling through red zone areas where FARC or paramilitary groups may be present. 9. Do not be oblivious to your surroundings!! Even with these precautions, things can still go wrong. This is just part of travel anywhere you go. I know you are a content creator and you can’t do your work without you’re gadgets, but with that in mind, you have to accept you are drawing attention to yourself, this is the reality of the world when we step out of our safe bubbles. I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself in other videos, and thank you for sharing your beautiful experiences in my country, you’ve gone to all my favorite places in Colombia and appreciate you sharing it with the world. I love my country, which is why I lead yoga retreats down there so I can share the beauty of my country with North Americans. Travel safe, God Speed Happy New Year 🎊❤️

This was so painful to watch. So many red flags here. 1. you are white. 2. you are an attractive female. 3. you do not speak Spanish. 4. you are walking alone with no one around. 5. you have your cell phone out while you are walking alone (even locals do not do this). 5. YOU ARE IN COLOMBIA for gods sake!!!! There are pockets all over Latin America (especially Colombia) that have poverty and extreme poverty (you yourself identified and filmed what appears to be a rough neighborhood). I wholeheartedly agree that it is cool and adventurous to travel alone and explore the world but the risk reward has to make sense (risking your life just isn't worth it). As a Colombian American these types of stories continue to place a dark stigma on a beautiful country and a beautiful people. Just so people understand the risks, i know tons of people that have gone to Colombia and had an amazing time but i also know a few people that have been robbed, beaten up and kidnapped (always in Medellin) so please be smart and safe!! Sorry you went through that. One really does need to keep one's guard up in Colombia. I've spent a lot of time there and I love Colombia and, beyond having my pocket picked on a tram in Medellin, I've never had a problem. But I think a lot of that is due to being fluent in Spanish,, staying in safe areas, and avoiding situations involving drugs or excessive alcohol. I had a girlfriend from Cali, Colombia for 5 years and have many Colombian friends. All of them are more safety conscious than I am. They will never have their phone sitting out on a table on a patio in plain view, like we do routinely in Canada. Their purses are always held securely. The windows of their cars are tinted very dark so nobody can see what they have inside and attempt a grab and dash. But I've had amazing times in Colombia and will be back again soon. I hope you continue your journey in Colombia.

Don't do that, you just have to be smart when you travel. Keep good situational awareness. Take a friend if you can don't go into city neighborhoods. Look around, you don't be a tourist wearing bright colors. Try to blend in and go only with groups of people or in areas that are safe, not isolated areas. That's very important in Columbia... The reason people have problems in any country even in United States, like bad parts of LA Los Angeles. You can't go in late at night because there are gangs there. This is in every country you just have to be smart about it. You can't go to places that are isolated and be alone at all hours of the day, especially around poor neighborhoods.

I have never found myself in a similar situation, and I have only had 2 guests robbed (both on the beach in Taganga)... You were lucky, and I am very glad that were not hurt! You were also very lucky that the bus was there, and that people tried to help you... Also, if you had asked wherever you were staying about walking that route alone on New Year's Eve, they would have strongly advised against it. (Crime has risen sharply throughout South America as a direct result of increased severe poverty caused directly by the COVID economic fallout...) You yourself quoted rule number one at the beginning of your video... NEVER BE ALONE IN A REMOTE AREA (especially if the are no easy ways to escape the area you are in)... Also, you are walking around with cell phone/camera out and concentrating on that rather than your surroundings... Not good advice in most areas of the world (even areas of New York). Be safe in future, and be sure to check what areas are safe with your hostel/hotel/hosts before doing things. Be vigilant, be sensible. While on the other hand South America in the 50's and 60's, had similar (slightly worse) crime statistics as Europe, while now S America is sinonimous with crime. Dear Alina, I happened to see your videos about Colombia, and this one disheartened me a lot because I was born in Colombia, but I've been living abroad for more than half of my life. I've traveled a lot all over the world and I can tell you I've had great experiences but also bad ones everywhere. That's the reality of many countries. Few of them are 100% secure. BUT, that does not excuse what happened to you in Santa Marta. The problem is that you never expect that to happen to you because you see goodness in the world (I'm like that too). You want to share the beauty you see with your viewers, so this is a splash of reality that tells you not to let down your guard anywhere in the world. I remember being in the main train station in Rome (Termini) waiting for my train. I just sat with my music and a sandwich to wait, when two policemen came and told me to move from that area of the station because I could be raped!!! Never in a million years, would I think I was in danger. But, be certain that, if you are street smart, plus your mind always seeks to share the beauty and the goodness of the locals, that's what you are going to encounter. And when you find yourself in situations like the one you just went through, you do have protection (twice they send help, a taxi driver, and then the bus right there waiting for you) I hope you never go through that again, anywhere, and I hope that this bad episode will not smear the wonderful experience you had in Colombia. As a fellow intrepid Canadian traveller of a certain age, I can commiserate with the terrifying situation you experienced. In my many years of travel around the world, albeit as a male, either solo or with my spouse, I have never really felt unsafe. Call it stupidity, ignorance or naiveté. That's not to say attempts at muggings haven't occurred, I've just been lucky to have either thwarted them or come away relatively unscathed. Unfortunately, all the incidents have been in South America. With depressed economies and currency valuations, a gringo or gringa is a very desirable target. Just one stolen cell phone can provide the equivalent of a month's wages. Even my well to do Colombian friends have been subject to numerous thefts and muggings in Bogotá, Medellin and Cartagena. I count myself very fortunate that I have been so lucky, as should you. Don't let this incident prevent you from continuing your travels. It really is the best education you could hope to obtain. I know you've already experienced the kindness of strangers, and let those positive memories frame your life experiences. Learn from the tragedies, but move forward with the quest for discovery. hi Alina, I´m Colombian, and I live near sta Marta, I know how do you feel, this is the reality in my country, unfortunately, I am very sorry for this terrible experience, these are things that should not happen anywhere in the world. I hope you can overcome the experience and this will make you stronger, with no disrespect I would also say that now you have your spidey sense ready to recognize dangerous situations in Latin America. hugs Alina.

On the flip side of things, I would be remiss if I didn’t observe Colombia produced the greatest love story in Latin America, the novel Maria by Jorge Issacs from Cali. Its considered the best romantic novel in Spanish in the nineteenth century. Its full of pathos and sensitive feeling. A tale of heartbroken love - its been made into many films but I keep thinking of the Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Efrain’s choices result in Maria dying before they can consummate their love. I wonder if the author wasn’t inspired by Michael Drayton’s famous Sonnet 61

In one hand, I'm sad that this have happened to you Alina. On the other hand, I admire your courage to continue with your trip but please be careful. I can share a personal history with you: I'm a Venezuelan man, and when I was younger (as a middle/low-class guy living in Caracas), I walked with my girlfriends (of that time) until the door of their houses exactly to avoid these situations happening to them... I mean, I wanted to protect them. A couple of times, I was about to be killed in similar situations (as the one described in this video) after leaving them in their places... Now, after some years living in Europe, I came to realize that flirting in Venezuela (Caracas 2004-2014) seemed like flirting in the Medieval Age... Hopefully, I could survive, but sadly I have friends that were in the same socioeconomical situation and they didn't survive (I'm serious about this)... Perhaps Colombia is a less violent country but in any case be careful. Thankfully, God was and is with you. Regards from NL.

I am very sorry for what happened to you, it is not in all the cities of Colombia. Unfortunately people choose the easy way, thank God nothing happened to you. You have angels who always take care of you and I hope in some course of life to meet you and show you that Colombians are like that. Unfortunately you have to go through a very unpleasant experience, but leave a lesson and it is not to trust yourself, not to walk alone, not everyone walks with the same heart and spirit. I'm seriously sorry and I hope to help you share your channel very much and reach millions of views so that you can recover what you have lost. God bless you and continue with that light that you inspire and radiate in your videos, I love them.

I'm so sorry to heard what happened to you. As a Colombian male, I can tell you the security has been decreasing dramatically since Venezuelans arrived to Colombia. Santa Marta is one of the closest cities from Venezuela. You have to understand that people there live with $5 dollars per month. Most of the guys from Venezuela are looking to steal something in order to eat. Probably you don't know but Rodadero beach is surrounded by the poorest neighborhood called LA PAZ. Most probably the you attacker lives there. Now you can be cleared about not walking where you don´t see people. Forget paths. You have to be in crowed places.

Well ok a lot to unpack, but first i am really glad you are ok! As a Colombian i am really sorry and ashamed for this which is sadly one risk anyone should really keep in the back of their minds when coming here and almost everywhere in Latin America, nonetheless I wan to thank you for your reaction and your love to the country despite this. Yes, as a rule of thumb the best strategy is to just give the stuff up but your reaction even if it was riskier kept you safe and in one piece so probably you saved your own life right there so dont feel bad for it. However, to anyone who is reading, coming here is safe but you need to always always be aware of your surroundings, this might sound crazy but being aware of your surrounding will actually make you look more of a local than being completely oblivious and might scare the bad people aware. ALWAYS ALWAYS ask locals if the route you will take is safe, ask as many times as you can (you can say, "esta via es segura", or "es seguro andar por aqui"), i always do this even being from here. In this case, this very secluded road was kind of a red flag. If locals are hesitant about the safety of the place or if they are not around, skip it. I am really glad you mentioned how locals helped you, like the taxi driver or the people on the bus: THERE ARE MANY MORE GOOD PEOPLE THAN BAD in our countries, dont forget, while travelling in LATAM being around people will always make it more safe. Also, if you, unlike Alina, have no actual reason to take out your technology/valuables DONT DO IT, this does not mean that just because you pull them out you will get robbed, but please always avoid risks. But in general, just remember this and you will have a good time even with your technology out in your hand. I am really glad you will continue your trip!!! The places you are going to next, like Tayrona and Minca, are MAGICAL and particularly safe (especially Tayrona, I recommend staying inside the park). And lastly, Santa Marta for me does not stand out at all, like you said it can very much just serve as a hub to go to other nicer places, if you skip it altogether you are not missing much, but if you wont staying closer to the city center is relatively safer and its much closer to the places where you can take the bus to Tayrona or whatnot. Thank you again Alina for coming and staying even after such a scary moment! I hope and I am sure you will have a better experience now that you are more aware of the risks and what you can do to avoid them! God bless and happy new year!!!

I got robbed 4 days ago in the historic center of Santa Marta on Parque de Bolivar by two guys after a night out. Handed over all my stuff and still they decided to break my clavicle. Just went through surgery yesterday to get it fixed. Funnily enough the police told me “oh yes, this is a very dangerous area”. No idea why they are not patrolling around there knowing it is dodgy, yet frequented by locals and tourists as it is part of the historic center of Santa Marta.

because the government is ignorant and corrupt, imposed all these "c o vi d" rules (just look at the people, still wearing masks in a tropical country...) and sent police to break up parties and birthdays, but tourists who bring in money are getting robbed. Why doesn't the police dispose of these anti social parasites for good? There should be zero tolerance for this in 2022

You do not have to be ashamed of the bad people because you are not one of them. Everybody knows that MOST Columbians are lovely people and you all showed it by your kind remarks here to Alina. I am glad she shared this because too many travel You Tubers give the impression that it is okay to go to countries where there are dangers they are not used to and just wander everywhere no matter the danger. I’m so sorry you went through that. 😔 I’m Colombian and I’ve been following your videos since you arrived in the country. I live in Cartagena and, despite the good people, great places and experiences, unfortunately these kind of situations are common in Colombia and latin america 😞 not proud at all but In general they are the result of bad administrations and a lot of inmigration. But they don’t happen all the time. I would recommend to look for local Touristic guides in each city you visit so they can take you to safe spots at the right times of the day and also explain about the place’s history. Sending love and a lot of support. Hope you are doing better. Ps. If you’re staying a few days more in the country, I would definitely recommend to visit San Andres Island, Parque Tayrona, villa de leyva, eje cafetero and tatacoa desert. You are welcome anytime 💖 cheer up

You did not almost got shot. This is a clickbait of a over dramatic traumatized white girl who happened to have one negative experience. That guy would've probably robbed you but they don't shoot people for fun in a busy highway. Also you stated that you ran in front of him and he nearly grabbed you. If he really wanted to grab you, he would've grabbed you. Let's be factual for a second. You're a solo female in a poor foreign country walking in an empty street flashing your camera and phone around because, and i quote "I'm a content creator". Being robbed at gun point is to be expected when traveling to south-america. It should not come as a surprised. Hopefully you learned a valuable lesson. Watching Kurt Caz vlogs might give you a different perspective. Guy was calm during a shootout in a brazelian favelas and he purposefully walks in the worst neighborhoods of SA alone lol.

@@franklinmiller3402 agree with both of your comments. I don’t want to come across as harsh to her at all, but this needs to be a very big wake up call. I’ve seen other RU-vidrs, not just females, take risks like this in the pursuit of content as sadly they seem almost oblivious to the risks of walking round areas of extreme poverty with thousands of pounds of equipment etc on them. There are good reasons why even smaller RU-vidrs befriend and pay expenses to locals when they visit places like this.. they work the locals into the content and you wouldn’t even realise it was effectively paid for security.
