Bogota is not on most people's bucket list travel destinations.. but maybe it should be? If you are an experienced traveler or have a local to show you around, this capital city has a lot to offer. Join me as I spend a couple weeks touring around, eating some amazing Colombian food and learning more about the history. You could say that Bogota is the gateway to the rest of the country, so I'm very excited to see what comes next!

SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads): safetywing.com?referenceID=alinamcleod&Ambassador
I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.

Love Toronto, have visited like 100 times in the past 10 years. Toronto is multicultural, intelectual, and Dinamic. Bogotá has more history, is absolutely way bigger and more beautiful. The mountains will take your breath away. Toronto is perhaps the worst city when it comes to food. Hard to find amazing food. Don't get me wrong Portuguese and Korean are great but it is way behind Atlanta, NYC, Dallas or anywhere in Latin America.

@TheMilk Trafficker " Even Colombia's own, Medellin, surpasses it." assravaged Paisa with inferiority complex detected. What you say is complete nonsense. Bogotá is much older than Medellin, it has a much larger and older historic centre, a much larger variety of architectural styles (you won't find the English styled houses of Teusaquillo anywhere else in Colombia). Any building in Bogotá is much more imposing that any Medellin building: The Congress House, Palacio de Nariño, Museo Nacional, all of the Salmona buildings, there are many more churches (and more varied), the Cementerio Nacional, the San Francisco palace, all the "claustros", the National University Campus, the Colón Theatre, and a long etcetera. Bogotá has just been a city for a much longer time and it's miles away more important and cosmopolitan. Bogota has one of the richest architectonic heritage in Latin America hands down.

@NormanF62

Most people think of mountain destinations as small towns and living in one at the same altitude as Bogota, you can definitely notice a big city has a lot more going on. The temperatures will rarely exceed 90 in the summer and the nights will be around the 50s. Bogota is that happy medium though when one goes to Cartagena on the coast, it will hotter and more humid and December is probably the perfect time to swim in the Atlantic! Columbia is a lot like Miami the opposite of what people think of Buenos Aires being the Paris of South America. So much more to document and that couldn’t be put in one video. Looking forward to your future discoveries in Colombia!

Excelente video!

This video annoys me in the best way. The amount of hate and negative connotations aimed at Colombia internationally especially from North Americans is insurmountable. So much so even immigrant Colombians develop complexes and believe it’s too dangerous to visit. With the immense worry that if anything should happen to their international acquaintance that’s one more negative image they have to contend with for the rest of their lives. I find this sad and detached from reality and Colombians with their kind hearts in general do not deserve this treatment.

Went to Bogota in Oct of 2019. Had a BLAST! If you are into big metropolitan cities, check it out. Definitely go to the Gringo Tuesday party on Tuesday if you can! The city is so underrated, I think partly because the weather is NOT tropical, its more like fall weather in the US with bouts of rain, warm during the day cooler at night. If you're a tourist, just stick to the popular tourist areas, don't dress flashy, keep your phone picture taking to the main areas, carry your wallet in your front pocket.

The furnicular up to Monserrat was one of my absolute favorites in Bogota when I visited in 2015. I was fortunate to spend 6 weeks in the country with my father, who is originally from Bucaramanga. If you are traveling around the country, I do recommend Bucaramanga and Chichamoya Canyon. Of course the beautiful coastal regions (Cali, Isla del Rosario) are incredible as well!

Thank you for sharing your experienced. I visited Bogota this summer after a week in Medellin. The difference in altitude wears you down quickly so get some extra rest. The north side of the city is more affluent and safer but your only worry will be traffic jams. Enjoy the beautiful people and great foods, Bogota is a wonderful place.

hey welcome to Colombia Alina!! I am from colombia and live in Santa Marta a city located at the north coast of colombia, I recommend you to visit Santa Marta of course and Cartagena these cities have an interesting architecture both cities have colonial building colorful streets, I also recommend visiting medellin, Bogota or any other colombian city all of them have their own magic and try all the colombian food as much as you can, however, I recommend you be careful when filming with your celphone or camera because there have been some cases of robbery, but do not be afraid I am telling you this just to take into account and be aware of this type of unpleasant situations. in general I can say that colombian people are friendly and kind. I hope you have fun and enjoy Colombia.

Great video. I live here in Bogotá… and I lived for 7 years in the US between Philadelphia and NYC … it’s weird to compare but I find some semblance between Bogotá and NYC. Regarding some of the dishes you mentioned, No, You can’t find Ajiaco anywhere in South America, not even anywhere in Colombia it is a typical dish from Bogotá.

Alina, just saw your new video. You are totally correct in that if you plan well and take the common sense precautions, you will be ok. Happy to see that you followed my recommendation on Juan Valdez. It is a chain, but for pure coffee such as americano or lattes and cappuccinos, it is very good. I noticed that you were drinking Club Colombia beer. I think it is very good. They also make a red and a black beer. The ajiaco looked great. Yes, you will get avocado and rice with your ajiaco. They blend ver well. You will enjoy Cartagena. Just stay watch out for the street hustlers. They are intense and do not respect the fact that you say “no” to them.

I practically lived on aguapanela when I was in Colombia! I personally prefer it cold, and it's very refreshing on a hot day or after a tough sweaty hike at high altitude :-P Did you try lucuma ice cream? Lucuma is a fruit that has the texture of an avocado and the flavour of a yam and lucuma ice cream is delicious.

I worked in the Information Technology field during the 90's and I was fortunate to visit a number of Latin-American countries, some of my most unforgettable memories were in Colombia. Bogota was incredible, much bigger than I'd expected. Full of art, fashion, culture, history, opportunities, and unique experiences, Bogotá is a great city to visit, but if I had a choice I'd would live in Medellin, a fertile region famous for its coffee plantations and its flower farms, for its orchids and butterflies, it is known as the City of Eternal Spring for its idyllic climate, The people are incredibly welcoming, "Paisas" as the folks from Medellín and Antioquia are affectionately known are famously friendly people. It’s not unusual to feel welcome anywhere you go in Colombia, but in Medellín you get the sense that people genuinely are very happy to see you there. They’ll often smile at you in the street and even strike up random conversations (whether you speak Spanish or not). It gives the city a pleasant atmosphere and is another great reason to visit Medellin and Colombia in general. It's a tough choice to make Bogota or Medellin, if I ever have to move out of the US, I would most definitely consider Colombia as one of my choices. Cheers!

Hello Alina, here in Bogota the city is divided into 20 locations, and it is true there are some less safe locations, for foreigners, and from experience I can say that in the countries where I have been this also happens, there are places in Brazil, which also do not They are not safe but this matter is worldwide, a hug and when you can, there are other cities that you can also visit in this beautiful country, a hug,

I LOVE BOGOTA!!! I will say that it took me time (probably over a year living there) before I completely fell in love with the city - the city is so big, and it takes time to get to know!!! People are more reserved than in other parts of Colombia in terms of making friends, but of course they're just being cautious. My favorite parts of the city are La Cinemateca (the local film theatre), DametuLengua in Chapinero for Language exchange and soo many events, Gato Gris (restaurant with live music), Plaza la Perseverancia, THEATRON, and just all of the fun pop up events all over the city!! It's so diverse and definitely not everyone's primary definition of "beauty" like Medellin, but it is so full of life and culture and you just never run out of things to do or places to explore!!

Much vlogging of Colombia and Mexico recently and both countries look full of colour and character definitely well worth visiting. Maybe they do not have the safest image for tourists but what is unsafe because some murders occur in a local community in any country and people will pay respects but if they hear it happen in a country with a reputation then maybe they rule out plans to holiday there.

I'm glad you stopped at that tiny restaurant. You left out hot chocolate w/tamale. Go to Mr Buñuelo!!! Zona T = very best Mall Andino is a big deal to go to. Crepes & Waffles: very popular by teens, & families Restaurants are very enjoyable Ajiaco= soup. Delicious. Herb=guascas. Mix food...its all good!! Next time place the rice &avocado in there lol that's how we do! Graffiti is legit. Very cool artists. Did you have "Calenazo"? Lulo is yummy fruit, if you eat raw it's bitter. Better as a juice.
