That was awesome! Great footage. I spent years looking for tracks like that. Hill climbs like that require big power / high wheel speed. The 45 ate it for breakfast!

That is wild footage mate glad you're fine! I would have probably turned around haha To me it sounds like a vacuum issue. If you are using a vacuum assisted brake booster and attempted to brake while flat foot under boost, the brake booster probably would not be doing much as it relies on vacuum. That combined with the lack of traction and incline is probably why it may have given you the sensation of losing the brakes. Love your work

My turbo barra + zf6 patrol had (might still have) a stalling problem on hills under brakes, especially when it's hot. Turning your thermos off for the water and hard mud driving would have left it hot and the hill makes you brake harder. I have basically eliminated the problem by replacing the vacuum line check valve. Apparently big 4x4s use enough vacuum under brakes to stall a barra without a good functional vacuum line check valve and obviously braking performance suffers too

respect. that was insane, Timmy and his patrol make some of it look easy, but all the winching help us understand from home just how gnarly it is. I can't imagine the cleaning inside and out needed after this adventure! Timmy needs a windshield wiper sponsor. you know it's great day when you find your croq in the knee deep mud. One reason I hate autos for 4x4ing can't remember from the build vids if you used a vacuum booster but with boosted petrols I'd recommend a hydraulic booster for the brakes

Hey mate, loving the content. Miss seeing the Barra LC at work. Sometimes in extreme driving the rotors can push against the calliper pistons and then the first time you apply the brakes, all your pedal travel just goes towards pushing the pistons back against the pads and rotors. Root cause could be too much bearing movement. You may find you need to pump the brake pedal several times in these situations.

Good comment. Root cause could also be mud/rocks between the rotor and the pads, pushing the pistons back while the brakes are off.

Now that was squeaky bum time for sure. I even got a bit twitchy watching it. Going back down a hill like that is a true test of skill and ability and being able to think clearly in what is a split second. The majority can do it. Been there and done that. Like you I got away with it and managed to do enough to avoid disaster but on reflection lots more you and I could have done. Hopefully there won’t be a next time, but if there was…… 👍

That was a hectic reverse hill. I recall when the BA Xr6 turbo and auto came out a mate reversed his into a pole, turns out ford had a reverse over torque engine cut out.

Handbrake on LC80 horrible even with extended dog-bones new brake shoes still don't foster conference. If I manage to 8HP swap seriously looking into other options like Electric parking brake calipers, Transfer center disc handbrake mod or even different transfer like LT230.

Do you have a one way valve going to your brake booster to stop boost pushing the diaphragm the wrong way?

Yep! Certainly do, problem was hydraulic - pedal went straight to the floor.

@@DesignedandBuiltif the pedal goes soft again don’t pump it just park it leave it running clamp the brake lines if the pedal then goes hard remove I clamp at a time if your’ve got a calliper problem you’ll find it if it’s still soft with all brake lines clamps it’s the master bypassing if that makes sense

Does the braking system have ABS? Given front locker wasn’t in and you were spinning wheels at all sorts of different speed, it’s a relatively uncommon but possible thing for the ABS to block your brakes and roll back like that on a slippery hill climb

Regardless of the fact that you have a good engine and good suspension,Never,again NEVER forget to engage 4wheel drive especially up against a steep hill like that.Another technic if brakes don't work switch the engine off and have the vehicle on gear.Always be on full alert.

Not sure it was the gearbox that failed, just a combination of landcruiser/patrol parts that form the brake system!

@@DesignedandBuilt ⁠you thought you stalled a auto? What happened was the motor cutting power to save the gearbox because it was rolling backwards. Cutting pressure to your brake booster. FYI ford owned landrover when disco3/4 were made. (Rangers now coming out with disco tech and failing 😂

Brake booster was fine mate, pedal straight to the floor. System has a check valve in it! Problem was hydraulic. The Barra and ZF have been floorless!
