as a person who reads like 95% library books this was a very interesting watch! I feel like my biggest frustration is the difficulty of getting access to new releases, especially titles that are either extremely popular or not at all in the mainstream, so in that case I might be the opposite and turn into more of a book buyer haha

@@elskabee I write as a hobby. If I ever get published or self publish or whatever. I literally couldn't care less if someone that wouldn't have otherwise been able to buy, afford or simply wasn't sure they'd like the book, would pirate it. Absolutely nothing is lost. There are countless books I ended up loving but that I would never have tried if I had to pay for them. That I now own anniversary editions or leatherbounds of. And since I live in the Netherlands, libraries are stocked with Dutch versions of books and I can't imagine how long it takes for a new book to be added. I haven't used a library since I was 16 or so I don't know if libraries pay authors per copy they loan out.. but you're not stealing a hard copy from a store. You're reading a copy of a digital copy. And if you actually like the book, then you can still buy it when you do have the means, or when you see a nice special edition you'd like etc. Not to mention that piracy could instantly be lowered by ten fold if publishers didn't charge almost the same price for a digital copy that a physical paperback costs. Lastly, not every author deserves money. Authors can be people you don't want to support for a variety of reasons while still having written very interesting or good books. Like Cixin Liou, who supports the uyghur genocide. But has written two relatively decent books with very very good sci fi concepts. Anyway, to each his own. Have a nice day :)

I personally like videos about more random older books instead of the hyped books that I have already heard about a million times, but I understand why those get better views.

Love this! I read 90% from the library and then buy the books that I loved after borrowing them. It makes me feel better as a consumer buying only books that I love. I do also like the idea of having a handful of unread books on your shelf to read so support authors and to keep things fresh without feeling overwhelmed.

@@joshina4497 Strange, I thought I replied already but my reply is not here. Anyway, libgen and zlib. zlib is only available trough TOR (often offline even on TOR) and through the telegram bot that you can access if you've ever donated to zlib. Libgen has returned now zlib is gone, but seems to have less content than before zlib existed. If you don't have an ereader, don't know how ebooks work, how to view them on your pc/laptop/tablet/phone (would not recommend phone, it's really bad for your eyes) or anything of that sort. Please feel free to ask. Lastly, if you can't find whatever book you're looking for on libgen, tell me what book you're looking for (I promise I won't judge .. maybe little lol), and if you have a preference for a specific format (e.g kindles use mobi, other devices use epub etc). If I can find the book on zlib or elsewhere I'll upload it to wetransfer or something and give you a link through the youtube comments.

I know not everyone wants to organize their books like this, but I have a separate shelf/space for my unread books. Then I know if I’m looking at that shelf that all of those books are ones I still need to read. And especially if you want to keep it below 10, like if you keep those on a different shelf it’s really easy to immediately see how many new unread books you have

I love your plan to just go into a store and buy books. I find that watching and reading reviews can really influence which books I read as well as my opinions on them and I’m sure it has caused me to avoid books I probably would have loved. Sometimes reading reviews after I finish a book even makes me question my enjoyment of it. Reading is such a personal and subjective hobby so I’ve been trying to avoid reading reviews and just letting my heart lead the way lol.

As someone who buys books secondhand, I am starting to notice the excess/surplus is growing, but there are less buyers. Nowadays, I enter used book shops, read the gists, and realize, "Man, now I know why this was unhauled." I don't really buy "new releases" as much because I've been burned by a lot of them before--such an expensive mistake all because of the hype around them. Nowadays, I just borrow from The Internet Archive--I've read a lot from them so far, and it's free! I wish to donate to them once I'm more financially stable. :)

Congrats Chandler this is so impressive!! I use my library for most of my books, and I mostly read new releases. I have bought many of my favorite books I read for myself after I read it and found out I loved it. It felt silly at first since I had recently read it and wouldn’t pick it up right away to reread but it brings me so much joy now to have all my favorite books on my shelf. Mostly series and romance, some other special/emotional ones, all comforting. I can wait for a good deal too and pick up the occasional new book I’m really excited about. I got rid of some impulsive books I didn’t enjoy or never actually seemed to want to read last year & building up a library of favorites to reread and remember fondly has helped me limit spending and increase my happiness with my books. I wish you luck in finding what works for you, just over sharing my experience to anyone :)

I love this idea so much and it’s one that I’m definitely going to utilize in the new year. Since I work at a library and also have access to donated material, I tend to either prioritize library books to read b/c of the impending deadline, or snatch donated material that we do not want to then add to my own shelves. It’s lead to the majority of my bookshelves being unread books. The hardest part for me, when it comes to getting rid of books is the ones that I had good intentions to read for whatever reason, but now do not want to read. I struggle so badly with letting go of those books!

I always set the goal to get my owned unread books to 0 and keep failing. I read a chunk and then buy a chunk, read some, buy some. Maybe 2023 or 2024 will finally be the year that I do it. I think it will be doable since I’ll be on a budget and making larger necessary purchases throughout the year. I love the two box idea. I already do that where I’ll decide if I really really want to keep a book or if it’s better to give to someone else that will love it more or would be okay rereading through my library.

Otherwise, I have a bit over 100 unread books to read. 79 if I don't count all of my Discworld books, because I have that entire 50ish book series and don't really intend to knock out the over 30 I still have unread back to back or anything, I have my lifetime to read them all!

Off topic of your video but your kitty is so gorgeous 🥹 And I don’t have too many unread books (maybe 20 max) so I could definitely do this in 2023

Pretty much everything you said at the beginning sounded just like me. When I first discovered booktube I went completely crazy buying books alot of which I got just because I found it and was like oh someone mentioned this it sounds familiar. Don't really remember what it's about but I'm gonna buy it anyway. The worst part was I was just getting back into reading after a very long time so I definitely should've been more selective about the books I bought. Because now I have a lot I haven't read and am still trying to get into a rhythm with reading. I totally overbought books and it's overwhelming and I'm upset that I didn't grow my collection more slowly and organically by reading the books I owned before buying more. Doing what you talked about and go into a store, not know anything about a book, read the description and then decide on my own whether to get it or not. But I didn't do that so here I am.

I tried to do this last year, but I only finished reading 18 books. I still have over 150 unread books. I'm planning to borrow less books from the library and read my own books this year.

I would bave a tbr section in your bookshelf, and then for each book you keep, you can put in in it's regular genre/color/whatever section on the shelves. ALSO, I love your shelves in the background, a dream!!!

ahhh chandler this was such a cool and satisfying video! i knew from the times you mentioned it kind of in passing that you were working on doing this but i never realized just how many you got through, that's awesome 🥰 how many (total, not just unread) books do you have left/how do your shelves look now? did you do a before and after? i made it a goal of mine to read my (/significantly/ smaller) owned tbr as well and ... did not achieve that whatsoever lmao. however i did read all three of the books i bought this year (plus i bought a special edition of a book i'd already read) so that's something 😅 in 2023 i would like to actually complete my owned tbr, which i think comes out to 30 books. considering i only read 32 for the whole of 2022.... we'll see

You can monitor the unread nook by putting them on their own shelf or on your bedside table. I keep my priority books in my bedroom. My 24 in 2024 are always there reminding me, so I don't get distracted by other books in my mood reading ways.

hmm i wanna do something like this, i've been thinking i buy too many books bc they no longer fit on my shelf and are filling up my closet. i read about 40 books a year, so there's no way i could read them all at once. but since i dnf pretty easily i could prob get rid of more. anyways thanks for this video i'm gonna go look how many books i read this year i already owned as a starting point

Your comment on mass market, YESSS! I hate mass market and I hate hardback. So it really sucks for me because I have fave authors (like JR Ward) where that’s the only two options. So I’m thinking I will start buying ebooks for anything that doesn’t have a standard paperback option

I ended up reading 126 books in 2022. I probably do not need to buy anything for the next six months with all the stuff I still have to read. I really do not want to hold on to anything I’m not really going to keep and reread. I’m looking forward to seeing if I can incorporate some of these tips.

I am currently reading "Second Genesis" by Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, a sci fi thriller I picked up at Goodwill more than ten years ago. I have been trying to read more of the many unread books on my shelves.

Great to do this challenge! 🙂 I have actually done this a couple of years ago and I unhauled everything haha. My reading taste changed dramatically, so all the books I still owned weren't my taste anymore. Now I just buy books I want to reread over and over and own 80 books now instead of like 500. Think it's good to have a balance with looking for random books, new releases, recommendations and backlist author titles to buy.
