Just before that era, the UK outlawed radio stations from playing "Rock and Roll". From that was born "Pirate Radio", stations would hire boats and set them up to broadcast music outside of the 12 mile limit. This was shown in the video from RUSH in their song "Spirit Of The Radio" which was written more about the 1st Toronto radio station to hype their music. But in their video they pay tribute to the UK "Pirate Radio" boats.

In the 60's u had a trend of 2 guitars, 1 for rhythm and the other for lead... The Beatles (for example) had John Lennon usually playing the rhythms while George Harrison played the lead guitar and technical parts... The Rolling Stones had Keith Richards as the main guitarist while Brian Jones played slide and rhythm guitar... In CCR, John Fogerty played lead while his (late) brother Tom Fogerty played rhythm. But most major bands had 1 guitarist... The Who, The Doors, Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Fleetwood Mac, etc. In the 70's, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Yes, Rush, Rainbow, etc ... had 1 guitarist, but some bands started experimenting w/ dual guitars... In the UK and Europe, they had Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy, Genesis, Scorpions... In America, we got Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Kiss, Blue Oyster Cult, Lynyrd Skynyrd... Thin Lizzy was a huge influence on Iron Maiden's sound - the dual lead guitars and harmonies of Scott Gorham & Brian Robertson... the songwriting of bassist/ vocalist Phil Lynott were a huge inspiration to Maiden's key songwriter Steve Harris (bass). But the band that truly perfected the dual lead guitar attack was Judas Priest... The 2 guitarists Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing had contrasting styles, but they combined to produce a lethal sonic attack that played at fast tempos and set the benchmark for what would become a trend in the 80's... especially thrash metal bands like Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer... and other metal bands like Saxon, Helloween, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Accept, Kreator, Annihilator, etc. Iron Maiden was founded on Steve Harris' songwriting w/ his harmonies and time changes being key elements of their songs... Guitarist Dave Murray is the technical wizard of the band... and then Adrian Smith (2nd guitar) provided that dual lead attack that was more fluid and less aggressive, compared to Judas Priest or Motorhead... It gave Maiden an original sound for sure.

I paused at 9:56 when you was talking about 2 guitars. Most rock and metal has a lead and rhythm guitarist! Skid Row who I see you haven't reacted to at all yet do really well with making those two guitarist working together! Of course, I have to admit of all the metal bands Cinderella have probably did the best job as far as the way they set up their songs! Cinderella if you think of it as like putting the music together the way someone puts an orchestra together set their music up that way and each thing came in at the exact right moment! I would suggest coming home or heartbreak station for cinderella to see what I'm talking about. But, there is also the fact the lead singer Tom Keiffer tried to sound like his favorite singer and did really well at it! His favorite singer was Janis Joplin and they did do a cover of Move Over! He does sound eerily close to Janis Joplin!
@sammyp4216
@sammyp4216 Год назад
OH in that type of music the lead goes crazy with the exciting solos and everything while the rythym guitarist keeps the beat and time. Just so you know the band Ac/Dc Angus Young was the lead and Malcolm Young was the rhythm. Malcolm taught Angus everything but didnt' want to be in the spotlight. One time Angus was asked "How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world?" He replied "Ha, best in the world? I'm not even the best in my family!" Malcolm was better just too shy!
@devilpuppetsinc
@devilpuppetsinc Год назад
When you describe loving that feeling, I really believe it’s a combination of the individual musicians and how they are captured sonically. The production fits the band perfectly. Martin Birch also produced two BÖC albums, Deep Purple, etc. On top of that, having a bass player being the band leader inevitably leads to a different sound. The songs are written around his bass lines and the guitar harmonies. The drumming by both Nicko and Clive fits perfectly and is not your standard double bass kick of most metal which gives an additional layer of differentiation from the genre. Keep enjoying music (discovered you from your Rush reactions).

Welcome to the Iron Maiden family, my friend! We're overjoyed to have you. I know how much you appreciate Rush too, so who knows, maybe we'll make a full on metalhead out of you 😁Which of course doesn't mean that one cannot appreciate other kinds of music as well. Quite the opposite, metal is a sponge that absorbs any and all other genres adding them to its own concept, so there's always something new to discover as a metalhead. I'm from Sweden, and unlike in the US, heavy metal never went away here but continues to thrive, attract loads of new fans and produce countless talented - and successful - new acts to date. This actually goes for most of Europe as a whole, but Sweden, Finland and Germany have been especially productive. Many of these acts are obviously very much inspired by Iron Maiden, one of the most popular and influential bands of any genre on our turf. And - I don't know how much this matters to you, but I for one am overjoyed - in this day and age, heavy metal is not the exclusive white straight boys' club it might appear to be for someone just discovering the classics. Everyone's welcome. Just respect your brothers and sisters of metal, and they will respect you back. I mentioned this because I reacted to your "long blonde hair" comment. I strongly recommend that you check out the legendary Thin Lizzy. If you do, you'll know exactly what I'm referring to. And if you're in the mood for something that is very much of our day and age, check out Myrath. Very few people in the US know who they are, but in Europe, they are quickly gaining traction on the metal scene. You could actually, to oversimplify a bit, describe them as a mixture of Iron Maiden and Rush, with an oriental flavor. And they are from - brace yourself - Tunisia, Africa. The metal scene is becoming a truly global phenomenon, and this is exactly as it should be.

This was a big single from Iron Maiden's 4th album 'Piece of mind'... It was controversial in Europe because 'Eddie' (Maiden's skeletal mascot) was depicted as being lobotomized and killed onstage... The media monitors thought it was objectional for viewing and declined to show it on national TV (Cable TV was still in its infancy) because of 'violence'... Even today in America, a lot of footage is not shown or censored on networks that airs on other stations. 'Piece of mind' saw Iron Maiden headlining arenas across the world, having graduated from an opening band and were selling millions of records worldwide. The album cover showed a lobotomized 'Eddie' bound in a straightjacket in a padded cell... When Maiden released the next album 'Powerslave' in 1984, 'Eddie' was resurrected as an Egyptian Pharoah and then a mummy rising from the dead... and his head still showed the lobotomy from the previous album.

Maybe someone has already said this, but: This song is based on a poem by Alfred Tennyson called "Charge of the Light Brigade," about a tragic charge of soldiers on horses against entrenched soldiers with machine guns in the Crimean War. It's a poem that the boys in Maiden would've learned in grade school. And they turned it into a metal anthem!

'The Trooper' was based on the Crimean War (in what is now Ukraine) of the 1850's in which the British and their allies took on Russia... The trooper in the song dies in the end, cos that was the fate of a lot of the soldiers in war during those times... It was worse during World War I where soldiers were massacred by machine gun fire if they even attempted to charge enemy lines, and battle fields remained deadlocked for years as no army could advance... It doesn't glorify war... it shows the futility of the lone soldier who is just a single casualty for the battle where thousands are killed. Ironically, Crimea is the region in Ukraine that was occupied by Russian forces in 2014 and annexed from Ukraine... It's from where Russian forces tried to occupy Ukraine in 2022 by advancing West, but failed to capture the capital Kiev... Crimea is currently occupied by Russia's forces and pro-Russian militia.

'''The brigade was not completely destroyed, but did suffer terribly, with 118 men killed, 127 wounded, and about 60 taken prisoner. After regrouping, only 195 men were still with horses. The futility of the action and its reckless bravery prompted the French Marshal Pierre Bosquet to state: "C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la guerre." ("It is magnificent, but it is not war.") He continued, in a rarely quoted phrase: "C'est de la folie" - "It is madness."'' If you do the maths, that's about a 60% casualty rate; which is unthinkable in the modern era. It is remembered as a glorious defeat. A very British way of coping with loss. It still makes me proud to be English. Death in glorious battle for King and country is to literally to die for

Fantastic reaction!👍 With many Iron Maiden songs, you get an accurate history lesson. The Trooper tells the account of a British soldier in the Battle of Balaklava during the Crimean War. Lord Cardigan led the British cavalry against Russian forces during this battle on 25 October 1854. Lord Raglan had intended to send the Light Brigade to prevent the Russians from removing captured guns from overrun Turkish positions. However, there was miscommunication in the chain of command and the Light Brigade was instead sent on a suicide mission charging straight at heavy Russian artillery which cost the lives of over a hundred British soldiers. Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote a poem to commemorate this disaster and he called it "The Charge of the Light Brigade". The bronze that the recaptured guns were made from was used to make the Victoria Cross, a military medal of the very highest order that was awarded "for valour". Very few of these have ever been awarded, even to this day. Other great Iron Maiden history lessons you could check out.... Run to the Hills, Alexander the Great, Paschendale and Empire of the Clouds. I've been a Maiden fan since hearing their debut album in 1980 when I was 10 years old. I've seen them live every time they've played in London, their home ground and mine, and they never disappoint. Up the Irons!!!

If you're impressed by this one (and you said because of the two guitars harmonization), may I remind you that they have THREE giutarists now. I heavily (hah) suggest you watch one of the recent live performances of that one. The level of harmonization of the three guitar here is... Tasty. Expecially the first guitar solo, it's performed by two of the three guitarists, and the second one does it with a slight delay, but if you were to remove that delay you'll see they would be perfectly matched. That whole thing is MASSIVE. Check out the live from the show called "EN VIVO".

Dude, if you want to get up close and personal with Maiden, listen to the trinity of albums Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and Powerslave. Definitely their best works as a whole. Live After Death is a definite recommendation if you want to hear it live. 'Nuff said

Bro I'm telling you, listen to Aces High and Moonchild. These 2 songs are the opening titles on their respective records Power Slave and Seventh son of a seventh son which are my 2 favourite records. Not a single bad track on these 2 records. Bliss from beginning to end !!! Fire, fire, fire, fire and more fire. Listen to those 2 records in their entirety and in the order without skipping any songs. If you're not a fan after this the I guess Maiden is not for you.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Very dumb that the BBC wouldn't show it, especially it's a song about some historical things in their country.
