As a guitar player of 20 years, I can tell you what's going on here. GREATNESS. What you're watching is the guy who basically reinvented the guitar. He's not even picking the strings half the solo, he's tapping on them with his right hand basically making the notes ring out like on a piano instead of a guitar. As I said, I've played for 20 years and I still can't do the most basic of finger tap techniques and believe me, I dedicated many hours to trying, A lot of people can do it to some level, but Eddie made EVERY SINGLE THING HE DID look easy. There isn't an easy part to this solo after the slow beginning while he sits on the edge of the stage. What you just watched was the hero to every guitar player for the last 30 years display exactly why he was everyone's guitar hero. Even people who didn't like metal/ hard rock in those days respected Eddie's unique undeniable talent. He transcended.

YES, well said and my sentiments exactly. I was fortunate enough to see both several times in concert and I would find myself staring in wonder. One time at the Arco arena in Sacramento a buddy and I made it to the front of the pit and we were in the dead center. Eddie was sitting there with that big grin and I had a feeling of what was coming next. I started chanting "EEEEEddie!...EEEEEddie!"(I knew if I didn't someone else would have) and pretty soon the entire place was chanting his name. I will never forget marveling over how it looked like his fingers were literally twice as long as those of a normal person.

Your first comment about not understanding how he can do this has rang true for those of us that have watched him grow, he is a true virtuoso, a genius at guitar. Another interesting fact people used to read guitar sheet music but because of Eddie's finger tapping style they actually created a different type of sheet music called tabulature.

1979. I was 9 years old when I first heard Van Halen, and my life changed right there. I was into Kiss in a big way, but Van Halen immediately vaulted past Kiss. I saw my first Van Halen show at 11, and holy shit was it educational LOL. Edward Van Halen is like that cool uncle I never had even though he never knew me. That man and his guitar saw me through more shit than a little bit. I told my wife the one death outside of the family that would break me would be his, and it did. I still can't get through the video of that solo without tearing up. It makes me happy to see all y'all discovering EVH and feeling what he gave the world. Long live The King!

When Eddie was just starting out, he didn't have any money. He couldn't afford pedals for effects, so he learned how to get different sounds out of his guitar by himself. That unit he's playing, I believe they call it frankenstrat. It's a custom guitar Eddie made himself, so he could get more sound. RIP Eddie!! A LEGEND!!

DEONDRE- I've been watching/listening to Edward Van Halen since 1978, and the first Day I received VAN HALEN's First Album called Van Halen Van Halen - I was in Awhh and so were many other Star Rock and Rollers. Rick Perry from Aerosmith and Gene Simmons from KISS were just shocked at what they were hearing. They both Said they heard 2 guitars at once and where was the other Guitarist ? They also said they were threatened by the new Punk in town on the scene of his amazing Skill and Talent. Well by the Time their second album came out VAN HALEN 2 - It was all over. Eddie was Awarded the Best Guitarist in 78',79',80',81',82',83. My God. This video was Shot in 1986. Their other Albums - 3.Women and Children First, 4. Fair Warning,( Unchained, Mean Street, Hear About It Later) 5. Diver Down , 6. 1984 (Jump and Panama, Hot for Teacher , Drop Dead Legs , Top Jimmy,Girl Gone Bad, House of Pain.) All amazing . I recommend to listen to their material.. Such Perfection I Thank for your Honest and Genuine Reactions and Yes - u Are Right - Waving that Hat is the correct thing to do as HE IS Truly the KING of the Guitar. I feel he tops Stevie Ray Von and Jimmy Hendrix and Jimmy Page. Not even Close. Thank you again for Immediately Recognizing the True Talent of EDDIE and GOD REST HIS SOUL .
@mcotton71

He built that guitar himself. It’s a combination of a Gibson and a Stratocaster. The Frankenstrat was Van Halen's attempt to combine the sound of a classic Gibson guitar with the physical attributes and tremolo bar functionality of a Fender Stratocaster. It was made from a Northern Ash Stratocaster body, with pickup routing which he modified to fit a Gibson PAF humbucking pickup in the bridge position.[2] The guitar has a maple neck and fretboard, chrome hardware, and was painted with a black and white striped design until arriving at its final combination of red background with black and white stripes. It has a standard six string setup and a Floyd Rose tremolo.

Everything Halen was doing by this time was "Hit Sh1T" LOL. So their show even from day one their whole repertoire was a hit. So they didn't save this for last. This was in the middle of the show. They actually had left behind most of their hit by this time and made new ones because of the lead singer change. AMAZING! All of it.

I'm sure it's been mentioned somewhere in the comments, but most people have heard Eddie Van Halen's playing but didn't even know it. He did Michael Jackson's "Beat It". He went uncredited and didn't take a writing credit, which he could have done. As he puts it, he was asked to play the solo on Michael Jackson's song, Michael Jackson gave him free reign and Eddie wound up rearranging the song and then played the solo. He never thought it was going to be that big. And Van Halen had a rule that they would have to get the other band members permission if they wanted to do a solo gig. So he never mentioned it, thinking the other guys would never know about it. But when MJ's "Thriller" was released in November 1982, it BLEW up. And it's very obvious that the guitar solo in that song was played by Eddie, and his band members instantly knew it. 😆 "Beat It" became an iconic song, that far outsold Van Halen's record that year. It's not that Eddie needed the cash, but I'm pretty sure you could retire if you had a writing credit for a song like "Beat It".

Eddie Van Halen story is a quite interesting one because at the time nobody was really doing what he thought would be cool to do on guitar. He was just really inventive with his hand and everything he did I bet if you try to tap on guitar maybe in like a few days you'll get it it's actually quite easy. But he would take notes to where he can stretch them out and really compose them.

@7:35, you ask the million dollar question that has plagued guitar players since 1978. its all thanks to his having grown up in financial poverty but surrounded by a treasure trove of music. Eddie's hands became carefully tuned channels which unleashed true wealth into the world. He couldn't afford a guitar, so he built one to his own vision out of knockoff factory throwaway parts. he couldn't afford effects pedals, so he learned every noise a guitar could make and then wrote music for those noises. his hands were already classically trained for piano so speed and accuracy were already there. he was a genius songwriter, musician and innovator, questioning everything about the instrument and the various playing techniques, and above all, tone. he was a unicorn, a gift to us all, and the King of his and many other generations of guitarists who came after him. may he rock in peace.

Eddie wasn’t “the” guitar virtuoso, he pioneered the concept of it. He invented sounds that didn’t exist using methods of playing we thought was all but witchcraft. Though many of the techniques he employed weren’t entirely new, he leveraged them in ways that nobody considered to create a wall of sonic therapy that helped many of us survive our teenage years.

I still tear up after his death when I see this. This man was my idol the reason I kept pushing on guitar no matter how hard. His son now Wolfgang van halen carries on Eddie's legacy but in his own musical way. As Wolfe said " If my dad heard me copying him he would kick my ass and say son what's wrong with you. Eddie Van Halen is a legend. The band are no slouches either. You should check them out as a whole now that you've been introduced to the master of guitars. Check out Hot For Teacher official video. I think you'll like it and it has a killer solo..

Great video. There are the 3 kings, with no disrespect to the hundreds of amazing guitar players our there, but there was Jimi, Stevie, and Edward.

Van Halen songs to react too. Mean Streets, Hot for teacher, Panama, Running with the devil, or just any of them..." It is common knowledge that Eddie made a deal with the Devil, we don't know what Eddie got, But the Devil got guitar lessons"!!

Let me break it down to ya D. This solo was a copulation of all his solo work off all of the first 10 albums . U got eruption Spanish fly cathedral mean street and a few more. It was in 1986 they had gotten rid of there lead singer and got a cat by the name of Sammy Hagar

What you said about Eddie KNOWING he was "the Shit" is actually contrary to the truth. I don't remember his name right off the top of my head, but another very famous musician said of Eddie Van Halen, "He was blissfully unaware of just how awesome he was."

@@_deondre Really did and you didn't look like an actor some portray in their own little studio world. Not virtue signaling but i saw your response as a new person to Eddie just like I remember the Junk Yard Band of the '90's, seeing them live as a cop, and being starstruck in awe about the drums and tom-tom synergy. I loved Motown, Classic Rock, Rap, Metal, Grunge and Alt., and all unites. God bless, and rock on!

Apparently, 7 months ago, I saw and reacted to your reaction. I failed to like and subscribe. In all fairness, I drink a lot so I probably forgot and just went on to the next video. It happens. I subscribed today.

Those are " hammer pants" ( see MC hammer can't touch this) parachute pants were nylon, fit tight, and had zippers and pockets like cargo pants.
