I remember listening to the debut album in my room with poster of him on my walls, staring at that album cover fixated on that guitar he's holding, thinking it was the coolest looking guitar ever! When I heard that he passed,a part of that wide eyed youth that was me died with him. Same with Neil Peart. Losing both of them was really hard to swallow.

I think it's an impossible question, who is the greatest guitar player. It's not like 6 guys running a 100 yard dash against a clock. It's subjective. What one person likes in a guitar playing style, another may not. I like Eddie for the rock thing, he was a great player and innovator. I almost like his rhythm playing better than his lead playing. His rhythm work gets overlooked imho.

True, but I think one of the things he does the best is the way he seamlessly goes between both rythm and lead. He is so good at working it into the song and he gets u going without you even consciously being aware of it. A lot of people used to think it was multiple guitar players only to realize it was just EVH. Rip EVH, guitar legend no matter how u slice it.

In my opinion what makes Eddie and Hendrix the 2 greatest ever is they were innovators. There are a lotof great guitarists however no one changed the way guitar was played until Hendrix came along and then Eddie took it to a whole new level. He literally changed the way guitar was played and he was the reason guitar tabs were created.

I would have to respectfully disagree. Hendrix was good no doubt! But there were other guitarist's in Hendrix's era that were just as good if not better. Page, Campbell, Lee, just to name a few. When Eddie came along he blew the doors off of everything ever heard before. His playing and sound was like no other. No one was better than Eddie in his era. He was in a league of his own. Eddie also built his own guitars, hot rodded his own amps, and invented parts for the guitar. That's true innovation. Hendrix never did that.

I saw him as many or more. Van Halen played many backyard parties in Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel and Pasadena where I grew up. I saw them play the Pasadena Civic Center to kick off their first album "Van Halen" tour back in 78 and he did this same Eruption solo. Poor Diamond Dave never realized it wasn't him that was the backbone of this band, it was always Eddie and Alex.

Eddie will always be my favorite and he has been voted #1 on many greatest guitarist lists. That's not an easy list to rate someone on. There are a lot of greats and some of this stuff is subjective. *Harri* I HAVE to share this..... I grew up in Southern California in the 70's {as a teenager}.... I went to a party in Pasadena, CA once, which was about 25 min miles from my home. It was a huge party, several hundred, but Van Halen was playing.! Not to bore you but I was a touring musician during the early 80's, as a percussionist. Anyway, the girls all loved David but *MOTHER OF GOD* you knew, you KNEW there was something special about Eddie.! Even thru all the trips to the various kegs of beer we knew he was special.... I was very lucky in regards to a few bands. Another was seeing U2 at a free concert at my college in my freshman year. Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton, Cali... one of the great punk bands *X* played just before them.... I digress but Eddie was extra special and everyone knew it.... Just........ thought I would share a fans memory bro....... and no I didn't meet him. Too busy scoping out the opposite sex, lol...... God if we knew then, what we know now..... Take care now.... *David* .....
@atticussampson776
@atticussampson776 3 года назад
Thanks for sharing David. I probably bumped into you at one of the kegs. I grew up in Culver City CA and had the good fortune of going to a cpl of backyard parties in Pasadena, saw them a handful of times at Gazzarri's on Sunset, then some concerts over the years with Dave and Sam. I feel incredibly fortunate. I also did some work on their mom's house after she passed away as they were getting it ready to put it up for sale. The house was empty pretty much, and I was alone doing my thing, then Alex dropped in and my heart skipped a few beats. Given the gravity of the situation with their mom just passing I couldn't be this immature fanboy, so I simply introduced myself, and I told him I was sorry for his loss. A very cool guy, and he gave me a couple of cassettes that were laying around (VH1 & 2). He left soon after that. It's unfortunate that people make really ignorant comments like Scott above, when they have zero clue what they're talking about. I cannot wrap my head around why people can be so ignorant. Maybe they want attention or they like to stir the pot and say controversial things for reasons unknown. But one thing is for certain, you can't fix stupid. Again, thank you for sharing your experience.
@davidstenton4365
@davidstenton4365 3 года назад
@@atticussampson776 Most welcome bro.! You mentioned Gazzarri's..... I played there twice. On Sundays back in the day Bill had a theme called "Battle of the bands" one time, just as a dude hangin out, RATT participated in this Sunday thing... I remember it so vividly..! You'll remember on Sunset where it curves and goes slightly upward there was a billboard which for the LONGEST time was just acquire backdrop, blank.! I remember a week or so after they played the gig, that it said *Ratt and Roll* with the bands headshots... Then, literally, like a couple of weeks later they were booked on a European tour.... Shit like that is burned into my brain...!! In regards to Scott, with absent diplomacy, *F HIM* ! My feeling is Andy Warhol was off when he said *In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes* More like 15 seconds with the advent of A.I. & social media me thinks..! FYI, I lived first in Whittier then went south on the 55 to Tustin later on. Nice to hear from someone who *ACTUALLY* shared that same experience..! Have a significant day bro... *David* .....

@@johnnyb6067 It was a glorious time. No riots,no stampeding,the bands performed their whole set lists without getting pissed of and storming off stage or trying to incite riots. And you got your money's worth plus 3 or 4 encores. Bands didn't start blathering about what bothered them in the middle of a song. And in those days it was easy to sneak in "party favors" and nobody said shit about it other than "Hey man,can I hit that?" In those days we came home reeking of beer,weed, cigarettes and sweat and would talk for two weeks about how awesome the show was. It saddens me knowing that concerts will never be like that ever again. Once ticketmaster came along,it was over. I wish the younger generation could experience a show the way I did. To your question, I would like to point out an incredible guitarist, Yngwie Malmsteen. I somehow found him with the band "Rising Force", back in the day... I've been really enjoying the "reaction" videos to Van Halen and Eddie in particular. I saw them for the first time as a lead-in band for the Grateful Dead, 1980. I had no idea who they were. David Lee Roth got my attention. How to react to an acrobatic guy in tights and a superman cape running everywhere on stage singing his butt off? I got to the front of the stage, within 10 feet. Then I noticed Eddie doing things with a guitar I never imagined (I play guitar). He locked eyes with me and grinned. I will never forget it. The goat guitarist is subjective, of course, but he was a groundbreaker and participated in the musical score of my life. all the best

I grew up in San Gabriel Ca next door to Pasadena and started seeing Van Halen playing around in high school. Originally called Mammoth. You're wondering how anyone can be so advanced and excellent playing guitar. Eddie started out playing piano, then drums, while his brother Alex played guitar. They discovered that they were both better playing each others instruments so they switched it up. Eddie became so good partly because of natural talent but primarily because he spent almost every available waking minute practicing, while he was designing and building his own guitars. The bastard Stratocaster you see him playing got the name Frankenstrat because of it. Eddie is considered by many, including myself, to be one of the very best, most talented, creative, and masterful guitarist there is.

Ok, here’s the deal on Rock guitarists. First, it’s subjective and then there’s the technical aspect. Some guys can play really clean at amazing speed. We are talking about Rock ok? Just because some guy can play incredibly difficult stuff doesn’t mean it’s that great to listen to. So now the subjectivity enters the picture. It goes to songwriting and creativity. The best Rock guitarists have all 3 of these elements, technically great skill, creative style and solid songwriting. So now it’s apples to oranges. There are a good amount of excellent guys. Who do you prefer? Who’s the best? JIMI HENDRIX was an innovator who changed the way electric guitar was played, not to mention his songwriting which people still aspire to even get close to accomplishing. SRV is very soulful, bluesy and just badass. Eddie also shifted how you could play also. You can go on and on about the attributes of all the best guys. I like just enjoying all of them without a competition involved. That’s some silly fan debate that doesn’t prove anything. Yeah, some are better than others but why criticize someone else’s favorite? There is room for everyone to Rock. It’s like comparing the top athletes in different sports. Bad analogy, but just go me ok? Tiger Woods is not Conor McGregor etc.....

I totally agree. It's not a 100 yard dash and winner take all. Entirely subjective. For me it's Ed, but who am I to tell someone who likes Jimi or Stevie more they're wrong. All of the these men would humbly tell you they just love to play and they're no better than the next guy. Ed didn't think he was all that great, and he was incredibly humble, as was Stevie, and many others. They all had respect for each other and simply loved music. How blessed we are to have lived in the time when we could enjoy these great men.

7:50 This part has a lot of variables. Not only is he using his volume to create the violin effect, but he has to simultaneously use his left hand to tap the frets hard enough to almost self pick each note. I've played for decades and the idea seems easy, but actually doing it and making it sound anything like EVH are 2 different things.

I grew up with Van Halen and Eddie playing these solos and I agree he is one of the best ever! As I have matured a bit and having learned guitar I realized that Santana was my all time favorite then yes Eddie, SRV, Satriani, Vai, Jeff Beck, and so many greats. Check out Santana performing Europa - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JAsfAuvFvh8.html Pure exquisite guitar , so smooth, and so Santana! Unmistakable Sound!

It was of course a great solo but I’ve always admired Eddies creativity on the instrument.As far as the songs he created they were great guitar songs.When you are in a band with just three instruments the guitar player really has a load on him or her.

Eddie took it to a whole new level back in the 70s and 80s. A lot of guys today can play as well or better than Eddie could (Steve Vai for example) but EVH innovated a whole new approach to guitar playing and influenced a whole new generation of guitar players.

Eddie was self-taught. He worked extremely hard to learn the guitar himself. No lessons or anything. Just himself and his guitar. He was also the nicest band member to meet and get to know. He was down to earth and respectful. Unless you pissed him off. RIP EDDIE. You are still truly missed and still loved by many

Hendrix was the best of his era, just like Eddie of his and SRV of his. They all played a slightly different style with Eddie playing more rock. Jimi played more of a funk style, and SRV more of blues. All the greats always blaze their own path. They dont play like other players. Its why they all stand the test of time...

What you said is what all guitarists were saying when they heard EVH - he changed everything on the electric guitar. He didn't raise the bar he put the electric guitar in another Galaxy!! He had it all - chops, melody, timing, CREATIVITY, and on and on and on!!! On top of that, Van Halen had the best Rock Music Ever!!! It was weird how every song of Van Halen's is a BANGER! Greatest Guitarist, Greatest Front-Man, Best Back Ground Vocals (Thanks to Bassist Michael Anthony's high range from hell), and incredible drumming. There will never be a band like THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN!!!!

I knew Eddie was a ripper, but Wow, out of this world, thanks Harri!! So sad Van Halen fans; Eddie passed away Oct 2020, had a stroke, he was 65. He was married to actress Vallerie Bertenalli for almost 40 years. R.I.P. Guitar Wizard!! The guy who introduced Eddie was Sammy Hagar. Harri- Sammy was in a band Montrose that I've been to suggest. Crazy-good rock-n-roll, try Rock Candy or Bad Motor Scooter.

There are technically better and faster ones, like the speedy Yngwie Malmsteen or with the greatest variety Steve Vai ... But you are right, when it comes to feel Eddie has it also quite adorable... Btw Eruption is in parts very much like Villanova junction from Hendrix, compare this to the Woodstock version, what has more feel? I personally dont need such fast guitar playing and effect showmanship, making headaches after a while 🙈 The soul of the music hits me more with slowhands like Peter Green oder David Gilmour😇 or BBKing or Albert Collins or Jeff Beck, so many to name

Brian May (Queen) is another great guitarist and you need to check out the solo from "Brighton Rock". Don't forget about Eric Johnson either. Check out "Cliffs of Dover".

Eddie (ED)was most definitely the very best on the guitar. I have also seen and heard that even his guitar playing (with out tapping) is the very best. I have been playing for 50 years and I have heard many,many guitarists from the ventures, Dave Clark 5, Beatles, even the ones that Eddi was inspired by tapping. He has still taken this to the highest level. RIP Mr. Edward VanHalen.

Yeah, but it's really not fair to compare legends. But I can imagine Jimi Hendrix watching and listening and saying "Wow!". Also, speaking of Hendrix, it's reported that at Woodstock, Eric Clapton was scheduled to play after Hendrix, who was basically an unknown at the time. Clapton sat there trembling and smoking like a fiend, and someone asked him what was wrong, and he said "How I am supposed to follow that!?" No one would want to follow Eddie Van Halen or Jimi Hendrix after a performance, no one. Except maybe Brian May. Maybe.

Eddie Van Halen was a guitar God, he is simply the best hands down, what a legend he went away too soon. I did get to see him play in 1984 and again in 2007 when DLR rejoined the band. The 1984 concert was the best and loudest concert I have ever seen and Eddie’s guitar solo was as good as the one we just watched, well actually better since I was there to see it live 😮! Thank you for your reaction video as it brought back some really good feelings😎.

I think EVH was the greatest "rock" guitarist, whereas SRV was the greatest "blues" guitarist. Of course they are standing on the shoulders of those legendary "axe men" who came before them (e.g., Hendrix, Page, etc.).

Eruption is just one solo, this is much more than that: it's Eruption, Cathedral, the intro to Mean Street, an electric, distorted version of Spanish Fly (the original was played in a classical guitar with nylon strings) and lots of improvisation and freestyling. In order of "appearance" we have: - Stage right: some improvisation and Eruption's main/most iconic parts - Center stage: Cathedral - Stage left: Mean Street's intro, some freestyling and the last part of Spanish Fly, which he ends back on center stage. The final part, where the drums join in again, is just improvisation. 🙂

Eddie was overloaded with raw talent. But he also developed that talent and did his own thing. He played music the way he understood it and he understood it like no one else. His background in classical piano and jazz gave him a unique starting point. In my mind Eddie is the all around greatest. There are others who can play at least as well, technically, like Guthrie Govan, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Steve Stevens, Joe Satriani (among others) but they didn't have the sound, the rhythm, the approach, the subtle or not-so-subtle chord progressions as Eddie. Listen to many VH songs; they have layers to them, multiple guitars, keyboard, piano, bass, and a sound unlike any other. That's Eddie knitting it all together. Stevie Ray Vaughn was another who was unique and had a rare gift for music. RIP EVH and SRV. You both made an indelible impact on the world of music.
