The OST that played during that scene with Beako is called "Abyss", you should defo listen to Re:Zero's OST, it's amazing 🔥🙌🏻

The smell grows stronger the more he dies, the same way it does when he trys to tell people and the witch gets close and personal. And on top of him asking earlier before Garf sees how the trials affect Emilia is why he acted differently. The Margrave(pronounced Mar-Grave btw) otto is referring to is roswaal. Its a noble title, and basically the Margrave's are the overseers of a domain, they run it and protect it. Its also hereditary so its been in his family for a while.

From all the things Rem told us in the 2nd and 3rd arcs it seems like the smell grows stronger every time he returns, and that's behind why Garf had a different reaction every time.

Edit: I was probably wrong. The different reaction that time was from the increase in miasma. The same thing happened with Rem. Both times he had died twice when Garf and Rem had the strongest reaction to it

Spoilers season 2 It's not good to reinforce that because what Subaru thinks is immediately undermined by Garfiel working with him easily in the loop against Satella. The actual answer is unclear especially in the anime but whether or not Garfiel knows about the witch scent is based on whether Subaru's been around Ryuzu Shima and she's passed on the info(she's the only one who really just wants sanctuary's barrier to stay because of her trial seeing Ryuzu Meyer's past). Garfiel can't smell it at all but gets pissed at Subaru having a connection with witches because he hates Echidna and Roswaal.

@@siginotmylastname3969 I’ve finished arc 6 of the LN. Do you know when that information is revealed? If the answer is past where I am up-to-date, you don’t have to tell me. I might just be forgetting but I don’t recall ever learning that. Omega related? Quick googling seems to confirm what you say. I always just thought the difference in his behavior was just because of the extreme circumstances.
