Hello. I think it's really important that Macau keeps its Portuguese Creole +Elisabela Larrea . Congrats for all the work you're doing on your blog, RU-vid and your studies! Thanks to the publication of the French Edition house L'Harmattan, in March 2020, there is now a fresh new book (in French) to get to know and to learn Lingu Maquista. I'm decided to learn it some (as I can manage myself in Portuguese, it is approachable, more than the Chinese languages : Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakka ^^ for a foreigner perspective, of course)

Many Macanese also have some Indian blood in them. Portuguese came to India in 15th Century. They married local people and produced off springs. Many of these off springs went with the Portuguese to the new colonies of Portugal ie Indonesia, Malaysia, Macao and Timor and settled there.

This is interesting, my girlfriend is part Macanese and did one of those DNA heritage tests and it came back Chinese but was shocked that there was no Portuguese but in fact a very small part Indian!

@ianmann64 Maybe so, her surname is António! But I was wrong, there was a tiny bit of Portuguese, however the breakdown was 39% Chinese, 4% South & East Indian and only 1% Portuguese! Obviously the kit is only an estimate, but it's interesting nonetheless.

@ianmann64 They changed their names to avoid Chinese government persecution. For a long time during the Ching Dynasty, it was illegal for the Chinese to convert to Christianity.

@ianmann64 I am a Hongkonger, too. The British and the Portuguese have totally different concepts of race and ethnicity, as well as policies towards assimilation in their colonies.

Just a question about terminologies: Macanese - people of mixed Chinese and Portuguese ancestry living in Macau. Macau people - people living in Macau regardless of ancestry. So what were the full-blood Portuguese colonizers living in Macau called? "Macau Portuguese"?
@tomnicholls9016
@tomnicholls9016 3 года назад
That's it. I think many commentators are not aware of these distinctions. They thought that Macanese = anybody who is from Macau, which is not true.
@estranhokonsta
@estranhokonsta 11 месяцев назад
The name they would be called would be their birth name, wouldn't it be? But joke aside, the label used would depend on too many factors to have a established "rule", but one of the most influential would probably be the time they spent in Macau and how much they merged in the community? So it would be a question of individual path but also if they, as a group, had some kind of thing that distinguished them more from the general population. So i don't doubt that many were simply called as Portuguese (in Cantonese?) by the locals.

"Many people ask (to Elisabela LARREA) When are you going back to Portugal? " 4:49 Chinese people ask this question to Macanese people to make pression on them and to make them live the city-state Macau! That's RACISM & HARRASSMENT! -PERIOD-
