I am on a budget this autumn - living simply for the season
I am on a tight budget this autumn as we save for the new year, and I couldn’t help but notice the large amount of seasonal things that always are sold in stores this time of year. So much shopping is happening, but instead of partaking, I’m slowing down and living even more simply than ever. I am in fact, doing a ‘no-buy’ season, where I only spend on a few treats and mostly essntials. I thought this video might show you how getting cozy for autumn doesn’t mean a lot of purchases, and that we can enjoy nature for what it is and save our money for future goals. Hello lovely people! I hope you enjoy this autumnal video, we are budgeting a lot this year to prepare for changes, and while we’ve always lived simply and within our means, we wanted be more mindful this season in the midst of holiday shopping. There is so much focus on buying things in order to be able to appreciate a season, and while there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself, I think there’s a lot of ways to enjoy autumn that can also keep the natural world in mind. Personally, I’ve found it helps me feel less overwhelmed and more peaceful. I hope we can enjoy a season of simplicity together! Sending warm wishes and cozy hugs ❤

I recognized the name of the store, Mountain Rose, because, as many places do these days, they have an online store, Mountain Rose Herbals. I bought a wonderful chocolate tea and a couple of other items from them several years ago.

I know I try to buy less, and not impulsively. But most of us have smart phones and computers, none of which is cheap. I think we are happier overall with less, because things don’t always make us happy or fulfilled.

The main thing is that the pursuit of a conscious philosophy of "slow life" and measured consumption does not lead to the rejection of the benefits of the modern world and does not roll us back into the past. Whether intentional or not, I feel like you’ve already been doing such a great job on this channel over the years demonstrating how to live more sustainably - buying secondhand furniture, crafting your own decorations, making food/drinks with wild plants you picked yourself, etc. I don’t think many of us would even notice a change in your videos if you didn’t point it out! I lost my best friend on Saturday, as she was riddled with cancer, and it finally took her from us. But she lived her life to the fall, and right up to the end of her life, she never gave up. She is a shining example to us all, and was the most caring, loving person. I wish you so much love too, lovely girl, and send you love and blessings for the future. I love nature, and only go out to walk Madge, my rescue greyhound, but I enjoy every second I have outside with her. I love Autumn, and the colours are so beautiful here too in West Devon, England. I love this channel. When I was Paola's age, I wouldn't have been ready for it; it's ironic to me that people knock her for being 'immature' when, to me, she seems precisely the opposite. When I was younger, I was quite cynical, and hostile towards that which embraces simple, childlike wonder. But I think that was a symptom of the suffering I'd been through, and the messages I'd internalised from a world that wouldn't tolerate simple, childlike wonder in me. As I have worked to free myself from trauma, I have come more and more to see that childishness and childlikeness are opposites. The embrace of openness, vulnerability, and a cultivated sense of reliance on the natural world for its nourishment: those all take maturity in a society that can sometimes encourage a more childish focus on self-gratification, competition and material gain. The fact that I can enjoy this content so much seems like a token of victory against the middle-school contemptuousness that I and others bullied ourselves with in past life. I'm glad I'm passed beyond that painful stage, and I'm proud of Paola that she's gotten to a place where she can share such wisdom even to an older man of 40 like me. Love this little place on the internet, peace and love to all.

It’s nice to hear someone on RU-vid admit to a financial struggle and make a video on how to manage it. Everyone lands here at some point in life and we should talk about it more. It is overwhelming how North American society very much glorifies shopping for every season, becuase we honestly don’t know what else to do with our money rather than spend it on instant gratification. The truth is there are certainly other ways to enjoy the seasons and be grateful for what is already in our possession.

Hello! I'm 17, almost 18 and I've suffered with depression and a generalized anxiety disorder, along with autism and a processing disorder. This makes life slightly more difficult to handle, to say the least. I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer.. a stylist of some sort, or an artist. However, since the RU-vid algorithim has decided to put your channel on my recommended page, I decided to watch your content. And I must say, I have significantly matured. This wonderful environment that your channel has created.. made me realize that I want to do something with animals. Truly. I do not want to live in a fast-paced system, nor do I want to be stressed and anxious all the time, like I am now. I want to be surrounded by wonderful scents, and feelings. As someone who has hauled the reusable decor in and out of storage for more than 2 decades, it can get exhausting. Going forward I intend to only buy compostable decorations for all seasons and just add in the things I already have that I still enjoy.

Thanks for sharing. I'm also on a tight budget this season. One thing I've enjoyed doing for autumn decor is making autumn jars. I've collected leaves, acorns, feathers, pieces of discarded wasps nests, rocks, (anything I'm drawn to). I place them in clear jars and set them out on tables around the house. I love spinning them around to see the treasures of the season and others do, too.🍂

What she makes seems like magic, she gives you the feeling of her contemplating life and calmly reading, yet for her to make us feel that, she had to shoot herself sitting while reading, then getting up and repositioning the camera under the bridge, going back to sit down just to get the shot of her crossing her feet, then getting shots of her pup. She is a craftsman, no, an artist, when it comes to working hard to make us feel warm and cozy. Remember, she does this all on her own, as does another RU-vid favorite of mine.

This video encapsulates what I love so much about your channel in contrast to other superficially-similar channels that only connect seasonality with purchasing brand new items. I choose to purchase less because of the impact of each manufactured item on the world--on extracting materials, creating it, moving it, maintaining it, and disposing of it. First and foremost, anticipating and preparing for a family, is such a wonderful blessing, congrats to your both! Everything is so expensive these days. As often as I am tempted to make a new non-essential seasonal purchase, I WILL shop my "stash" first. FOr example, I recently wanted to buy a clear glass pumpkin shaped candy dish. BUT, honestly, I already two candy dishes that would work just fine. And so.. I am choosing to use what I already have and put that $ to better use, like supporting my nephew's school fundraiser.

I make RU-vid videos in a similar spirit as you and about a year ago I decided to leave my countryside home to travel full time across the continent with my two cats. A big part of my choice to do this was to live simply and to be close to nature. It has been such a powerful practice to only live with the the things that are essential and it has taught me so much! In northeastern Vermont where I live, there is an old saying I love - "use it up, wear it out, make do, or do without!" I used to live and work in NYC, where the pace of life demands that every need is automatically met with a convenient consumer solution - of course there are exceptions, but it's so embedded in the general culture there that it never even occurred to me to do things any other way. Being up here the past few years has been such an important, although often challenging, shift. I have been slowly remembering how much I love doing things by hand, sewing, baking, gardening, things like that. When I can meet the aspirational "I want that!" impulse with a creative solution instead of immediately defaulting to the consumerist one, life feels much more meaningful. I definitely still go through periods where I struggle with my spending, and I've been realizing that often my impulse to bring in something new - especially when it comes to my home or my wardrobe - may actually be a need to let something go, or to rediscover something I already have. Usually the desire strikes because I feel something is lacking.... I may not even know quite what, only that it feels like something a new item could make go away. (Literally right before watching this I spent 20 minutes looking at expensive flannel bedding... and my husband doesn't even like flannel! 😂) But despite what Pinterest, or the constant onslaught of ads, or even genuinely inspiring creators with beautiful homes may imply, I've learned that less is more. Having a simple, clean, uncluttered space uplifts my mood in a way nothing else does, and I never get there if I keep bringing things in (not even thrift store things!). It was so sweet hearing you say you're planning to start growing your family next year - what an exciting and wonderful goal to be working towards. I just wanted to say, please don't rush starting a family, don't bow to familial pressures. Make sure that it is what YOU WANT. You both are young yet, enjoy being with each other, as you only get one chance at it. Once the child arrives, your life is no longer yours, but your child's for the remainder of your days. And that is fine as long as you are prepared for it.

As a nearly 60-year-old happily childfree-by-choice person, I will maintain it is far better to make the conscious choice to have not had children and *possibly* maybe someday regret *that*, than to have had children and regret *that*...absolutely. Lately, I’ve been thinking that to save money and to save space by not getting unnecessary items for deco, I think it’s awesome to get a pumpkin, a fall plant or flowers, which will decompose and return to nature.

Such a beautiful and calming video in many different ways🍂 I’m along the same journey minus planning for a wonderful gift as a baby…I have three grown babies myself and two grandbabies💖 Paola, I really appreciate you bringing this subject to light. Every time I turn on RU-vid it seems it’s all about buying and decorating for fall. I found myself being heavily influenced and buying things that our little cottage did not need. I will be doing my first no spend month except for essentials and I can not be more thrilled about this endeavor. You are a light among this RU-vid land and I certainly appreciate your effort in making these videos🍂

Finally an autumn video I can relate to and truly enjoy! I've been feeling confused and slightly irritated by the many decorating for fall/autumn videos. I literally thought the other day they're all decorating now and I don't even decorate for Christmas (even though I celebrate it loosely). Thank you Paola! I find your videos, calming, comforting, reassuring and beautiful.

Autumn here in Florida is Palm trees and weather in the 80’s. I use candles, some Fall silk colors arrangements in my home. Most of the decor in stores really can’t replicate Fall, it’s a feeling and smell of the cool air and the leaves changing colors. I thank you for sharing you beautiful area where you live it helps me feel the season I so miss by living here.

I am apparently being called to make small changes to refashion my life to be more mindful of the earth as well as simplifying my life. First, I happened to find a tv series on Netflix called Down to Earth with Zac Efron and each episode focuses on one or more subjects concerning being kinder to Mother Earth and what small changes we can make as individuals to help our planet heal. Then this latest Cottage Fairy video further inspired and encouraged me to look at my life and see the ways I have been influenced by consumerism and realize I don’t have to “buy into” (pun intended!) the media’s message to buy more, consume more, etc. I love that even at 76, I am excited to make small positive lifestyle changes. To keep growing. To keep learning. And I love the synchronicities that bring the teachers to me at the exact right moment that I am open to receiving the messages!

I picked up a few strands of fairy lights at Dollar Tree a couple years ago (maybe when DT was still a Dollar lol!) I'm going to collect some small pine cones outside and fill a mason jar with them and the lights and add it to my existing Christmas deccies! Voila! New decoration without spending $$$!

I get so sad anymore when I hear of people still wanting to start a family. You deserve it, but I worry so much about the children who will have to endure this dying planet long after you’ve gone. I get sick thinking of what my son will have to experience. I so love the simple and slow life, but it isn’t going to solve a very real existential problem. I wish you joy and peace, but I mourn as though we are a planet in hospice.

I'm doing the same this autumn, though for different reasons. It is always a humbling exercise to leave my credit cards at home (and not buy online) and practice delayed gratification. "No, dear inner child, you can't have that right now, because we've said yes to saving for [blank]. Let's see what creative things we can make/find in the woods around our home! " ❤❤❤

I love your philosophy. Last year I was moving to a new home and while packing I realized how many unnecessary things I had. One of my decisions was to cut down on the seasonal decorations. So during Spring, Summer and Autumn I use the beautiful gifts of nature to decorate my home. The only exception being candles. But Xmas time is a different matter. I need all those silver sparkling ornaments and fairy lights to get me through the winter gloom. I love the aesthetics of your videos.

Thanks for dealing with these over-consumption habits. Looking at those beautiful sunflowers and all the offerings you already have shows how well you’re all set on those anyway. I think, not buying seasonal “stuff” just makes common sense for anyone. In fact the seasons themselves (even in places where they’re not so distinct) already offer us so much and also because they’re the most useless items the stores stock these days (I am finding that we can’t buy anything useful and essential in stores these days and have to order online!) and they’re made so cheap by mass production and many aren’t even so expensive to buy (compared to healthy organic vegetables and foods) but in the long run not buying us actually saves money in other ways, reducing clutter, space and increasing peace of mind and focus. I splurge on good, healthy food but apart from that haven’t bought anything in decades after getting rid of wasteful stuff that I’ve had (still have more than enough) and enjoying things that seasons and the beauty that the nature provides.

I think whatever season you are in ( we have just begun spring and the flurry of starting summer seeds), it is important for us all to be living more sustainably and more frugally. Repurposing, reusing, composting, growing our own food and more is how everyone should be living if they treasure our beautiful planet.

Years ago when I had absolutely NO money for anything to celebrate the seasons, I got to cutting out pumpkin shaped from a cardboard box. I painted them to look like all different kinds of pumpkins, strung them up, and enjoyed my homemade pumpkin garland! I still have them and put them out every year. I'm excited to put some pine cones and acorns with them this year 🌰

True. When I lived in a Downtown Detroit hi-rise I found a lot of nature and was very active outdoors. We have a river with islands, "rail trails", greenways etc. 🌳

Thank you for your video of peaceful harmony, this seasonal change is as always beautiful here in England in my garden and nearby woodland the birds are feeding excited it seems to me about the change of season, they live and feed within the trees and bushes nuts and berries fill their larder ( so to speak). I think we as societies are rushed into seasons by retailers, buy now must haves etc, spend spend is the slogan , not so for myself and many like minded people, look around you listen to the sounds of nature hear the leaves falling the lone hazel nut hit the ground birds excited at the amount of berries this year. I also recycle upcycle, it used to be called make do and mend by our parents and grandparents, A throw away society has created so much waste in the past. Getting back to our roots reminding ourselves of what is important for future generations , we owe so much to this beautiful planet . Thank you again for creating such peaceful videos. 💚🌹
