He is making a very generous and selfless decision for the music and scene he loves. This will open the door for other skilled hard dance artists to enter the list and enjoy the benefits that DJ Mag's exposure can provide. Like Willem said, there are so many hard dance artists that deserve more recognition and exposure. Respect
@@Josh_17 Top lists which base on opinion are ALWAYS going to be a popularity contest, if you'd make a top 100 Pizza topping list it would be just that. You can't make such lists without them being a popularity contest.
@@silentsun9392 Youre right. For an objective list we need a commission of longtime experts of harddance music. Maybe a team from the major labels for example. If I try to look at it objectively, I'd say DBSTF would be on the pole position this year. Imo they delivered within the greatest tracks.

If the list is a popularity contest, the most popular acts will get booked more because they're basically a guaranteed profit. Something being harder or better on a technical level doesn't mean it has mass appeal. Spot on the list massively impacts your earning potential depending just how high up you get. Top 10 are almost certain to make at least a million that year, Top 3 probably closer to 10m+ that year. It's a list of 100 acts but pretty sure only the top 20 of those actually really feel much of an impact. 'We got this act, number 23 in DJ Mag' doesn't really mean shit I suspect. You're right that it's a popularity contest, but doing good in that contest is very good for the bottom line. Doesn't make it right, but I get it.

Yes and unfortunately this top 100 will tell wich dj's will make it to bigger stages, how much these can ask to play, etc... And you end up with guys like DVLM paying people to collect votes in the tomorrowland camping and being 1st "dj's" in the world years ago... The hard dance scene dont need this shitty contest

As much as you wouldn’t say you’re the number 1 HDM act, you’re by far the biggest name to people outside it, and therefore an ambassador for it. That said, I don’t know any other DJ I’d rather be filling that role: you’re one of the most sweet, humble DJs in the whole electronic scene if you ask me, and you represent HDM very well by your example. In fact, it was through your HWS podcast that I first gained my love of hardstyle! Whatever you’re doing, I think you’ll be blessed!
The problem is that everyone can vote on the list. If only real listeners of EDM, people who see who made really good tracks this year and who made a good fanbase could vote, If all the people who just vote Martin Garrix, David guetta, the chainsmokers and DV and LM - just because they know them - would go away, the list would be wayy better.

Actually the first few Top DJ Lists of DJ Mag were all about skill and not about popularity. But then they changed the way of creating the list and it ruined it completely...
Agree and respect just got one point. I think you’re made t the right choice, anyway it’s up to you ! For me there is still a reason to participate in the top 100. I beleive that if we reach top ten (and you came close!!!! 11, Congratz 🙏) we’ll gaig credibility and visibility. For hardstyle, not juste for you, same thing for TomorrowLand. For me you’re the best musician not only for music, I don’t have enough knowledge to be able to say wich artist is the most talented. You the best because of the emotion you give to us, and that go furthers than notes for me. You always be a model for me and I just love to be in your universe and feel it. You were one of the acts that got me into music. I remember how, "Victim of my rage" was the first track I heard from you, and i slowly fell in love with your other tracks, coming up afterwards. Even though I'm not really a "Hardstyle" listener anymore, I always tend to fall back to your material. It's sort of "Nostalgia" to listen to your old work, and yet a surprise to listen to your new stuff. I've always had a motivation in watching your steps, and the fact that you start focusing on your artistry, and personal flow, is just as good as being nominated as the "number one hard dance act". You should do You. In fact, We are all here, because we love what you're doing! :-) Look deep into yourself. Your heart knows where to go!
I remember when Heady made it #11 on that list!!! That year is when I was learning about hardstyle and loving myself for finding such a thing in this world. Also that year about half of the top 100 chart was hard dance producers!
It‘s the kind of taste the people have ... There are people like us who loves Hardstyle so they Vote Hardstyle Acts not EDM acts and the same in the different way 🤷🏽♂️

I could truly state I felt in love with hardstyle in 2009 after watching by accident the Defqon.1 aftermovie. Coming from a country like Brazil, where we had no idea of and access to such festivals and the hard dance scene at all, your Sacrifice theme was such a breakthrough in my life - I even attended the 2010's edition. Later I remember you and Wildstylez playing for barely 100 people in São Paulo in 2012, I mean 0% glamour and basically braving a new territory spreading somehow the hardstyle heritage. Anyway for a very long time I criticized you and your choices as I eventually noticed your upcoming electro house career and stuff, the Brazilian DJ Gostosa ghost productions, etc. But for the very first time in years again I accidentally come over a video of yours and say "whoa. The shit is real!" That's it mate, maturity! Proud to hear those words, more than a puppet DJ (any freaking ordinary DJ can be that for DJ Mag and the big bucks) you're a legend. You represent a whole music style and that's awesome to hear that from you. Congratulations!!!
Very respectable. I listen to a lot of hardstyle and some of your tracks are unbelievable. You're definitely one of the best producers, if not the best, in my eyes.

I remember Gareth Emery speaking about quitting DJ mag as well and how he had received calls of companies asking if he wanted to buy votes. Yeah, but it's a marketing tool listing all the most popular acts, which event organizers can look at like a menu. Say Paris Hilton made it into the top 10. She will get booked like crazy, because audiences want to see her. We don't have to understand it, the event organizers don't have to understand it, they just know easy money when they see it. But it was always going to be a popularity contest if you let audiences vote. Acts with more mass appeal are going to get more votes simply because of number of fans.

Very happy you’re giving your honest opinion on the DJ Mag contest. There are lots of great artists in the DJ Mag Top100, but I don’t believe in the contest anymore since it’s more based on popularity than actual DJ skills.
Willem, ik ben het helemaal met je eens! Ik kan me nog goed herinneren dat je ooit de 11e positie behaalde en dat er toen minstens 10 hardstyle acts in de lijst stonden. Ironisch genoeg was dit in de mindere periode van de hardstyle scene. De periode waarin een groot publiek aanspreken belangrijker was dan kwaliteit genereren. De 'year-of-summer' periode, waarin zelfs jouw producties ondermaats waren (colours, spaceman, lessons in love, toulouse). Dit geeft maar aan dat de DJ mag top 100 geen representatieve lijst is. Ik ben blij dat je weer op je oude niveau zit. Je bent onderdeel van de gouden generatie hardstyle DJ's, net als Joram, Bas, Diederik en Stefan, Coen, Fabian, en Barry. De generatie die hardstyle groot gemaakt heeft. Van deze generatie ben jij de enige (naast Diederik en Stefan) die het lukt om relevant te blijven, door steeds jezelf te vernieuwen. Deze combinatie maakt dat je vandaag de dag de titel highest hard verdient.
i really like your decision on this one. i hope many other producers will follow your footsteps, because the dj mag symbolize something that it is not. we should instead have a top 100 list, where it is the real producers themselves that vote for eachother, in each genre. that would make way more sense. this video made me respect you even more than i already did. you deserve anything you wish for, even if it may seem like a 'smaller' personal goal. that is because you always try to stay true, humble and being the best version of yourself.
