Orson Welles was definitely the perfect choice for Unicron. One of my favorite Unicron lines is: "For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet Cybertron. But, now, you shall witness... its DISMEMBERMENT!"
I love Orson Welles as the og Unicron. I got to talk to Gregg Berger (Grimlock) and Paul Eiding (Preceptor) about their experience with Orson Welles. Both told just about the same story, the cast wasn't allowed to be around him! They both told about how when he would arrive to record his lines, they where all taken to a separate room in the studio, and from there, they'd watch a limo pull up, his driver would get out and take a wheelchair out for him, and in he went in order to record Unicron lines.
Orson Welles last role. Owned it. His was the most perfect casting choice ever as far as results go. There is some history show dealing with how hard it was to get him. Leonard Nemoy also rocked the voice for Galvetron.
When I was a kid, the only name I was truly famliar with was Nimoy. Vaguely were Judd Nelson and Eric Idle. Man, did Welles ever make an impression on me.
@Kion I would guess we're all Gen-Xers or something like that if we're fans of the original G1 series. I was born in 1974, so I was about eight when the toy craze exploded. Transformers and GI Joe were on TV after school every day around when I was ten. I can't call myself a "fan" of anything, much less a fanboy. I just like what I like, and try to make interesting videos based on their themes. I'm over a hundred subscriptions now, and it seems like most of them are TF fans. Something for me to consider going forward.
I like how they saw it fit to not have Unicrons mouth move when he spoke....it was almost like He is so large we wouldn't be able to see him speak anyways
Some excitement. Real stakes, interesting characters we can identify with, a situation that rings as truly horrifying, and tone down all the obnoxious Wheelie trash. Humans were never focal characters in the cartoon, and it's because the Transformers unto themselves possessed humanity. In the Bayverse, they're little more than giant avatars that create spectacle and perish in ways that no one could call tragic. I can watch Transformers: The Movie in my middle-age and understand it to be an epic of legendary proportions. Presentable to kids almost forty years later and it barely seems dated. Even if it did, it has a compelling plot like many great animated features that keeps you watching until the end. It's not me complaining about change or franchise cash-ins, it's clear to me that there was an old-school method of writing screenplays that worked. It was scrapped some time around 2000, under the wildly false impression that we were bored with the three-act formula that western culture had been using forever. How hard can it be to revisit this kind of genius? I guess incredibly so, but the recipe is right there.
I personally like Orson Well's Unicron voice. No offense to the other voice actors that voiced different Unicron, but Orson Well really voiced him better.
I used to rent this from my local video rental on VHS when I was younger. I must have watch this movie at least 20 times. Good memories. Unicron was the most fascinating to watch for me.
All gone in what was the most awesome show of Megatron's firepower. I would've expected a shuttle containing Ironhide and Brawl would've put up a better fight, afterall they were the real scrappers of the OG Autobots
I've recently started planning a fanfic with Unicron as the main antagonist. I absolutely love what I have in mind for Galvatron and Nemesis Prime, but I don't know what to do with Starscream, Megatron, or Bumblebee yet. Could also use suggestions of some of the most iconic cybertronians from throughout the franchise
@@djt08031996 He's ironically one of the youngest Autobots, if we're talking G1 canon. But so thick and stubborn, he's practically obsolete. I'd be curious to see what you came up with. Rumble on the other hand knows what side of the bread the butter's on.
Well you have to consider that the only Transformer Starscream HATES more than Megatron is Unicron. In Kingdom & Armada he was perfectly willing to side with Optimus after Unicron revealed himself. However, Armada Starscream getting killed by Unicron kinda pissed off a lot of the watchers. Don't forget Shockwave. If anyone can figure out how to beat Unicron for good, it's him.
If the writers didn't work to bury Rodimus, I think people might have been able to accept Optimus' passing. To me, what made Unicron so scary was that there was no hero to feel safe behind. Having Hot Rod become this false idol that didn't believe in himself caused the whole series to flop, unnecessarily. Transformers: The Movie showed a somewhat bleak world where a ragtag group of war survivors wander leaderless into peril, and it worked really well. My twelve-year-old self was convinced that Cybertron was doomed.

Guess we are just going to ignore the fact that hasbro headquarters got swamped with negative letters and even death threats from angry parents and children that was highly upset that Optimus passed away. And that had a heavy influence in them bringing back Optimus to lead the autobots If your going to tell transformers history include all of it not just the part about hot rod not panning out as a leader🙄
@@llks1772 I understand what you're saying, but I think you're missing my point. I am well aware of the controversy surrounding the season 1 toy line being "killed off" and it wasn't just the fact that they were beloved characters, but also took the toys out of commission for some kids. What I mean to say is that the upset of losing Optimus might have been bittersweet if at least there was a new champion at least half-worthy of the handle. Rodimus was supposed to be this incredible ass-kicker, according to the end of the movie, but season 3 showed him to be a wet firecracker. You don't have to like what happened, but you can accept it, if you can see the difference.
@@amazingkris hot rod was a mistake obviously he had no leadership skills I get what they were trying to do but with the backlash from that epic power move with Optimus It was hard for him to recover fully to be looked upon as a strong leader as other primes in the past. If I’m not mistaken over in Japan with the animated series and comic books so closely tied together hot rod/ rodimus prime faired much better than here in the states, Not 100 percent sure about that but I think I remember reading about that when you look up history of rodimus prime.
Some have made 3D models to re-enact scenes. Give me a minute to see if I can drum them up for you. If you go to Stable Diffusion or one of those sites and run Unicron through their guesses with varying styles, you'd be amazed what they come up with.
Sorry, buddy, it seems the creator took those videos down. They were amazing CGI models created through Unity, and the creator did a fanstastic job. I downloaded those videos for personal use, but I can't just post someone else's work. Maybe I can track them down, but it doesn't look good right now.

@@MountSec i asked midjourney what it would look like if Unicron and the Death Star had offspring. Interesting results, but just varying images, nothing 3D or animated.
What I loved was, just like Star Wars, most of the "villains" in TF had British accents. Shockwave sounded like he was from Manchester - "Decepticons, we're under attack .... SCRAMBLE!"
Unicron is an example of an AI let loose on the world. In this case, it self-sustains by devouring planets, and will solve problems that interfere with this agenda using the resources it is given, the information it is presented with and whatever other factors it can enter into a given situation. Like people, not all AI are the same, but if you have one operating without correction or guidance, it can wreak havoc on anything like Mickey Mouse's brooms in The Sorcerer's Apprentice from Fantasia.

Orson Wells didn't like voicing the character because he had said that he had no idea what the film was about & didn't know what transformers was & also he was sick & his voice was weak
There was a lot of work that he wasn't fit to do, but I suspect he had bills to pay if he wanted continued comfort to support his alcoholism. He still had his wits about him, though, and if I recall rightly, one of the sound producers mentioned Welles' delight to learn that he still had a tyrannical reputation.
@@amazingkris I heard Nelson Shin say that Orson was wheezing as he talked, and needed to use electronic vocal enhancement to make his voice louder for the film.
That's the talk around the table about Welles. His latter-day commercial outtakes are hilarious and sad all at once. Absolutely no one was going to challenge that guy, even when he needed a little firm guidance.

As a teenager I looked for similar work that was as good as this, and only found it in manga. Movies like Akira and Ninja Scroll are some of the best animated movies out there and they're also about thirty years old. Still, Transformers The Movie has an excellent mythological epic storyline and it might be the one I keep going back to.

I get why they had Unicron's transform reveal, but to me he seemed more scary in his planet-devourer form. If he had just started eating Cybertron, they would have really been screwed.
I agree with this. He wanted to torture Galvatron by destroying Cybertron slowly. He could have just masticated at his own pace rather than reveal his weak spots.
I took the thumbnail image from a Google search, and felt this was the coolest-looking picture. Could be from Beast Wars, could be fan-made, but no creator was given from that source when I snagged it.
