In this episode I asked and interviewed digital nomads how they make money from a remote island in Brazil.
After my first series asking digital nomads how they make money in Bali I decided to create a another season now from an island in Brazil, called Florianópolis. This time I will interview another very interesting digital nomads and I will ask all the questions you guys commented in the Bali video.
A lot of people often think that Digital nomads don't work or either make money in suspicious ways. But there is a whole world of them so I thought of sharing some of the people I interviewed and what they do. Here are the people that I met:

Great video, though a small correction. Florianópolis is not a remote island, it is the capital of the state of Santa Catarina with over 600k people where I called home for over 30 years of my life. Still a ridiculously beautiful place, but it is not remote at all. 🙂

Florianópolis can be anything but remote. The island has half a million inhabitants and is the capital of the state of Santa Catarina and can be considered a metropolis, since the only thing that divides it from the mainland cities is a bridge.

Came in the comments for this. From Collins Dictionary: Remote areas are far away from cities and places where most people live, and are therefore difficult to get to.

The concept is REMOTE WORK, could be anywhere including a big city, a farm, a different country or even your home. You only need to be remote from the company’s office. Florianopolis is not a Metropolis, it’s a medium size city according to Brazil standards. Only have 500.000 people. Florianopolis is one of the safest cities in Brazil. Floripa have but more than 40 beaches, some of them you can only go by walking trail or by boat. It’s an awsome place for outdoor sports. With young, beautiful and friendly habitants, you can enjoy not only the nature, buy many parties. Thanks god it’s not well know for remote workers, still not crowded as Canguu in Indonesia.

I'm American and also living in Brazil. I love it and due to the 5:1 currency exchange, my American salary allows me to have a extremely comfortable lifestyle. My apartment condo is 5 minutes from the beach and everything else I need is walking distance away. Just keep in mind if you're not in some kind of nomad hub, Portuguese will be necessary. I speak the language well and married a native who does not speak a single word of English.

For any and all tourists I recommend going to the South of Brazil, it is the safest and most developed region, Florianopólis, the city in the video is in the south, there are also other good cities like "Curitiba" "Gramado" In terms of beaches, the South is not very strong, the beaches are beautiful but the water is a little cold, I live in the northeast, here the beaches are more famous and visited by people from all over the country, I consider most of the cities here safe to visit, like "Fortaleza" "joão Pessoa"

No, it's just ignorance. She could perfectly google it. It's a state capital and one of the most important cities in the South Region. @@thelifewithnate Actually 62 is the official start of taking SS., though is was my 99 yr. old father' passing that made me start. He told me and my younger brother that if he passed before his Brazilian wife of 40 years that we would take care of her. Upon his passing my Brazilian wife of 23 years brought my mother to my wife's very large complex in Northeastern Brazil. I sold the house in New England with my brother and then moved to Brazil. Social Security was taken care of before I left because I wanted to do it in the USA to minimize complications. 😎

@@ocmetals4675 Great Question! My travel was based on my situation. My father who passed at 99, two years ago was also my best friend and I hesitated in traveling too far from his side. When he was in his golden years, he asked that if his wife of 40 years outlived him that we take care of her. She did and upon his passing we immediately brought her to her home country of Brazil, also my wife`s home country. We now live there. Retiring and moving to Brazil was enough travel for me.

Very cool. In my early 40s in about 2016, I retired and had some connections (completely legal) in South America that I visited. I was mainly in Medellin and saw the early versions of the digital nomad which sparked interest in the phenomenon. Most were tech workers. When I went broke and went back to work I remembered the nomads and got into tech. Still hoping to be a digital nomad, but everyone in America now wants to be a digital nomad in software engineering or in data analytics or cybersecurity. I think you would have to build a successful freelance biz or find an increasingly rare accommodative employer to make it work. For now, I am stuck at a corporate complex living the grind, on call. Cheers to the successful digital nomads.

Connections that were (completely legal)? What in the world is that even supposed to mean? I highly doubt that someone would read your post and wonder if your connections in South America were legal. Maybe it's late, and I am tired, but that was bizarre to read.

An interesting observation that holds some merit. I can tell that here in DC, the rage appears to be cybersecurity and data analytics for a six figure salary. You could totally write a book about your life's experiences about the fact that you retired at 40, lived abroad, but had to return back to the regular 9-5. A lesson for the aspiring digital nomads like myself.

I assume you are young. If I were in your shoes, I would make sure to max out every year the tax deferred savings plans (IRA, 401k, etc.) and also consider a taxable personal account. Eschew spending large amounts of money on youthful follies like expensive cars (most girls, if that's your thing, don't care that you drive a Honda anyways). Consider investing in the indexes, long term, like $SPY, $QQQ, and $DIA. Keep some money aside for "crazy investments" like bitcoin in 2013 that have risk profiles with asymmetric payouts. I am personally experimenting with buying leveraged ETFs and selling low-delta weekly option premium against them. When I get "called out," my move usually involves just selling a put at the exact strike price. Hopefully, this works out long term -- hoping/expecting to retire again in 5-10 years. I would also say to avoid blowing money on common youthful follies like expensive vehicles (only your bruhs care, anyways) and spending $40+ a day on lunch and coffees. Also, other common hot careers of the moment include cloud (my company paid for a class and of the 250 grads many w/ certs, only an estimated 20-30 got related jobs) and AI/ML engineering. @@thelifewithnate

All I know is that I'm envious that they earn in dollars and pounds. That basically makes some of them rich in Brazil. I wish I had any knowledge of these professions.

You don't really need knowledge, the last one sound clueless... It is mostly the diplomatic background you have, for instance, with my nationality I don't have access to Digital nomad visa or Working Holiday Visa... Even though I speak 3 languages and have a bunch of qualifications

Are you a nutricionist? You can work online for brazilians living in USA for example and earn dollars. You don't need any new knowledge, only adjust your comunication to people living in another places. I work as psychologist online for brazilians and I started using faceads.

9:20 - whoa.. no meetings!? I am also a developer working remotely, and my work consists of 80% of meetings and 20% of being angry that I have so many meetings. Then after "work" I need to find some time to do my actual work. This job is a trap. It made me almost dead inside. I hope I will find a better job this year. Already searching.

So incredibly crazy big salaries for employees, especially those who work remotely!! Amazing! With this money, you can hire 5 excellent developers from Eastern Europe, and they will work just as well! I don't understand employers at all!..

Great video. For me dropshipping has been really great last year. I can say advise for beginners that the most important thing is to always have winner products (I am using a bit of winnerzila, and I really think it's very good service with products, photos, descriptions, videos... anything I need for my store). I subbed last year on their lifetime plan, and my income is rising ever since (last month I had close to 14000$ profit).

Grazie mille :)

It’s remote Island from their Countries. Please don’t confuse “remote” with “unexplored” or “wild” places.

@@guilhermemiller6422 its a wrong use of the word. A "remote island" is an island of difficult access, which Florianópolis isn't. "remote from their countries" makes no sense.
