So hopefully I can clear some of the misconceptions through your question. For those who might not know this is the verse the person quoted: 23. “O’ you who have Faith! Do not take your fathers and your brothers for guardians if they prefer unbelief to belief, and whoever of you takes them for a guardian, those - they are the unjust.” I’ll try to be as short and as precise as possible. There are few things about the Chapter 9 of the Qur’an that I’d like to highlight for you first to understand what I’m about to explain: Context is super important. Chapter 9 was revealed to a specific group of people(and applicable to them) at the time of the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH). We need to read and understand this chapter in the thematic order to comprehend its historical relevance and defensive character - none of which apply this day. Since the beginning of time, every time God sent a Prophet preaching monotheism, the people not only rejected the prophet, his messages, and his miracles(by God’s will) but they also attempted and in some cases killed the prophets. God sent his wrath upon these nations as we learn through Prophet Noah, Prophet Lot, and Prophet Moses ( May peace be upon all of them) and other cases. Chapter 9 of Qur’an projected God’s anger towards hypocrites and idolaters at the time of the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) who constantly defied the peace treaty that was between the Muslims and the non-muslim Arabs and disregarded even blood ties [9:10]. I really want to keep going on but this is getting really long and I don’t think you’d be willing to read so much. Coming back to the Verse 23. Prophet Lot’s son was a disbeliever for around 900 years, did God order the prophet to cut his ties with his son all these years? No, Prophet Abraham’s father was an idol maker/worshipper. Did God ask him to disregard his father all of these years? No, It was only when God verdicts’ came upon THEM. To make it easier to understand, After constantly trying to murder the prophet Muhammad(PBUH), breaking peace treaties with the Muslims, God’s verdict finally came upon the disbelievers and God decided to punish them through the hands of the muslims at that time.( I wanna talk about this particular bit more but it’s going to get too long) Then I’d like to quote the verse 24 as well. 24. “Say: ‘If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your clan, your possessions that you have gained, commerce you fear may slacken, dwellings you are fond of, are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and striving in His way, then wait till Allah brings about His command; and Allah does not guide the transgressing people.” When God’s verdict came upon the disbelievers, there was a group of muslims that stood out. They hid behind the pretext of having to renounce their relatives and tribes and most importantly their capitals and commerce was mostly in the hands of idolaters. This would mean loss of finance and comfort to them. It stresses on the fact how they kept procrastinating their faith by running worldly things like youth, relationships, efforts, finance to the extent that that it took over their relationship with God and his messenger. Bottom line: These verses were an ultimate test to the Muslims at THAT time, the verdict was upon THEM, these commands of God were for THEM. Love and respect and family ties are virtues projected all over the Qur’an. Please don’t let out of context verses create hatred in your heart. I tried to make it as simple and explicit as possible. Hopefully it can help to clear some of the misconceptions.

@hmmm Hmmm, 7 years ago I was also 21 and accepted Islam after 2/3 years of deciding. I took my time Alhamdulillah. One advice I would give myself back then and today, is to get rid of friends who have bad habits and character. Even if you have to become a loner for a while. This will help you change your own lifestyle for a way that pleases Allah swt in a easier way Insha’Allah. If you are more sociable than me you may benefit from finding good Muslim friends but be careful not to copy things without asking questions. There’s a lot of Muslims whose actions aren’t suitable to follow. Asalaamu alaikum brother keep strong 💪

The rest is how they take it, only Allah SWT knows best. But yes, if you have got shahada in your own heart even if you don't show it, you are Muslim in the heart.

All of the that has been only recently been discovered was revealed thousands of years ago, before it was “discovered”, in the “crazy old book” as you called it. You can’t rely on science to tell us what is true because we are humans and can make mistakes, how many times has the atom been redesigned for example, and we still don’t really know what it looks like. And there is evidence! How can you say there isn’t? Have you done any research about it? Are you a religious scholar who thoroughly understands every religion and why people believe in what they believe in? Im not saying it’s a necessary to be one. I’m not a scholar, in fact I’m only 16, but I study my religion I question my religion, You are allowed to question it. I take the time to make sure I understand why I’m doing it. Islam teaches us to continue to respect both our parents even tho they might be of different religion (or even they might be a thief or a beggar, however hopefully not). Essentially one cannot choose one own’s parents, right. They are there for you till they wud deceased. I understand one day the Prophet (SAW) was asked by a friend “who is the most important in one’s life btwn a mother n a father ?” He (SAW) answered : 1. Mother 2. Mother 3. Mother and on the 4th count its 4. Father It’s truly a religion of peace and till the Judgement Day.
