The unknown party definitely looked like mackerel to me. Love that fish, and it’s popular in Japan. Also, I personally prefer Japanese pumpkin in my tempura to sweet potato. I find it holds its texture better and has a more neutral flavor, which I think goes better with the ponzu or other sauce it’s often served with, which often is a little sweet itself
@@gritmakaveli Cost-of-living/CPI adjusted, it's not as huge of a difference as one would expect. Also, pro tip: local restaurants are usually better and cheaper. McDonald's and many other major food chains jacked up their prices at rates *way* beyond inflation (because absurd profit margins $$$); most local restaurants did not follow this trend. Better food for a better price is the better option (and is also normally less processed, and supports the local economy).
@@linkly9272 While it's good to support local businesses, your theory doesn't always hold up. Had dinner last night at my fave mom & pop pizza joint and noticed they raised all their happy hour items from $6.50 to $10 overnight. 😮
I’m unfamiliar with standard tempura procedure, if they fry the whole shrimp… are you meant to *eat* the whole shrimp? Like head, eyes, and all? Or do they just fry all of it for convenience and you only eat the body or whatever?
@@JeffJefferyUKWhat?? I never liked the idea of eating the shrimp shell ,tail and all, I always assumed that you just ate the shrimp meat, I’ve learned something today.
If it's edible, it's edible. Frying it enough helps with that too. It's not going to kill you, but you have to nibble on it first to make sure you dont shred your mouth
Thank you for using the music from my favourite Zelda game, the first time through the video I ended up not paying attention and my mind drifted back to little me hunched under my bedside lamp with my oldstyle Gameboy (yes, I am getting old, true middle age is only a couple of years away, please help) and being completely wrapped up the adventure unfolding Infront of me. So thank you for that little slice of childhood innocence, I am going through a lot right now and that brief moment was precious to me. All the best to you dude, you have given me so many places and types of food that I want to try and for that I am very grateful.
In Indonesia, we got served shrimp fritters cooked with the shells on. I didn't care for it, but the French guys in our group crunched them up happily.
shells in comparison to the flesh have higher concentrations of glycin (the umami compound in shellfish, different from glutmate or inosinate) when they're fried like that they become very delicate and cripsy and easy to eat
The moment I went to Japan and wanted to try stuff from your channel, I realized that like 90% of the featured food is mostly in Kobe Next time I'll try to go there but sadly I couldn't in my first trip
Nah, thanks, we'll divide and conquer here-- I'll eat the raw tomato, you eat the mysterious fried whole fish, and we'll both be much happier than the alternative. XD
Ok so… I had to watch the video twice because the first time I got distracted by the music in the background and trying to figure out why it sounded so familiar lol love that song from Zelda. And the food looks great too! 😂😂😂
Tokyo Osaka n Kobe r the cities I wona go bruh but in the last short u uploaded yesterday I explained to u the intro of me afer college comes my job n my dream country I wanted to go for years is Japan 👍
Christ, the Links Awakening music on this just PROPELLED me out of my body and 30 years back to my childhood. Thank you, I was ~for a blessed second~ a child that does not understand English again and it felt amazing. Now I have to deal with the fact I'm old all over again.
Congrats for going out of your comfort zone yay 🎉 You know you have an undeveloped palette and are not used to eating vegetables when you say pumpkin tastes like sweet potato. That's like saying shrimp tastes like chicken.
