Ok here are some more: Monster chess: black gets normal peices, white only gets a king and 4 pawns, but he gets to move twice. Cylinder chess: chess but you can go through the walls on the left and right sides on the board Upside down chess: chess but pawns are blocked by their own pieces.
for the people wondering what the extra pieces are in the XXL variant: chancellor: combines a knight and a rook archbishop: combines a knight and a bishop centaur/crowned knight: combines a knight and a king amazon: you probably know it but its a combined knight and queen edit: big −> XXL edit 2: comined −> combined
The experience that you played pawn battle on has a few other variants, such as random which from playing random it seems that the king is always on the same square, but the piece other squares have on the back rank seems to be random, and so if I understand correctly the random variant on Roblox has more possible starting positions than chess 960, and Roblox also has Blizard, in which pieces become temporarily frozen after not moving for a certain number of moves while in the center.

Probably more than can easily be counted or calculated given how different websites and apps have different variants, and some websites have board editors that further add to the amount of variants that are created. Also in addition to well known variants there’s likely variants that are only known by a single family or friend group, that were made by a random person.
