To be fair, Sunshine's physics engine is a complete nightmare compared to the smoothness of Galaxy/Odyssey. But gosh did I feel justified in my suffering with Sunshine when I watched SmallAnt suffer as much as I did! XD
Hoverless is by and far the most interesting speedrun in my opinion. I can't think of any other game where you can take away the main mechanic and still have it 99% beatable with cool tech.
Mhm! While playing you can definitely tell the game was designed in a way where the hover nozzle was intended to be used nearly everywhere. Feels so satisfying to ignore it and figure out creative solutions instead!
Sometimes i say to myself "Man i wish sunshine had a long jump" and other times i think "Boy i wish galaxy had a dive" and then i remember odyssey solves both of those and i get happy
@@jacobcain9008 spin the left stick around and around quickly for a second until Mario starts ballerina spinning, then jump. It's floatier than a normal jump, but not particularly useful as far as I can tell. Also, ballerina spinning allows you to do the Cappy spin throw without motion controls.
I think it's muscle memory from odyssey. Dives don't really have the same level of momentum/recovery in that game so you can just do it whenever there, whereas you should avoid dives pretty much at all costs when platforming in sunshine.
I’ve been binge watching all of your videos recently and wanna say you do a great job editing and keeping your content entertaining I’ve never once been not enjoyed one of your videos so thank you!
I consider myself a casual gamer and I'm actively bad at anything I haven't sunk at least thirty hours into so I've never felt confident I'd be better than a speedrunner at any videogame. Thank you for that SmallAntOne.
I think they did that in galaxy 2 didn't they? Or did they just reuse those wooden block platforms? I've never played galaxy 2 myself, so maybe I'm wrong.
I can tell you never played or watched Mario Odyssey before. THERE ARE SUB-AREAS WHICH CAN ONLY BE ACCESSED BY OPENNING A SPECIAL BLUE DOOR, AND THE ONLY WAY TO OPEN THE SPECIAL BLUE DOORS ARE TO THROW CAPPY AT THE SCARECROW NEXT TO IT, AND WHEN YOU ENTER THE SUB-AREA, CAPPY DOESN'T JOIN IN BECAUSE HE'S STILL ON THE SCARECROW. That rant really let out my anger there, people should try it.
I just did a 100% Shine Casual run of this game 2 weeks ago and seeing your frustrations makes me feel a lot better about my play through. I found this game to be brutally punishing in certain levels/challenges.
I've watched quite a few Sunshine speed runners do this, but it's cool to see someone who doesn't run it make an attempt. You're still better at the game than I am.
"You are literally running(/swimming) through water. How are you not getting hurt?" Well from what I can figure, the water itself doesn't hurt Shadow Mario. The high water pressure from F.L.U.D.D. is. Pressurized water can carve stone. Pure, still water barely affects it.
7 year old me game'd-over so many times on the Sand Bird that I literally started having nightmares about falling off the thing and plummeting to my death :)
14:30 i literally havent played this game since i was a kid... But im pretty sure hes making it more difficult for himself with all the diving and needlessly high pace
Watching a professional 3D Mario game player struggle with some of these levels (especially the rooms with no nozzle) makes me feel less bad for having died to these levels so many times. Like the one at blooper Bay, I think I died a similar number of times to
I’ve realized that every 3d Mario game (except 64) you have an ally. Mario Sunshine you have Fluud, Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 you have a luma, and Mario Odessey you have Cappy
not counting 3d Land/World I guess. I’d argue that in 3d World you also have allies but they are the other playable characters. I don’t think there really is one for 3d Land though
The secret areas of this game are so much like the bonus stages of the Spongebob Squarepants Movie: The Game that I refuse to believe it is a coincidence.
18:15 when you were facetiously talking about recommending the game if it had a way to stall in the air for just a little bit and it not having it I started to wonder what the game would be like if it did, but not in the sense of him having the Hover Nozzle, more of a Mario Galaxy stall. Then when you mentioned the Hover Nozzle I felt like an idiot for forgetting that was a thing lmao
Replaying this in the all stars collection I can concur: the dive in Sunshine is death. It has one function only: getting from point A to B quicker, not platforming.
The animations and overworls look surprisingly good for a 2002 game. I mean some building and street textures are horrible, but the detail on Mario and a lot of the characters is amazing for 2002
Actually crying with laughter! You are so slick at Odyssey but I think even I am slicker than you at Sunshine (and that's saying something) this game be HARD!
17:58 - if I had a nickel for every time I’ve personally hit the dock and died like that instead of collecting the shine.... this is literally my favorite game of all time but every time I do that blooper red coins level I’m always paranoid I’m gonna jump too early and hit the dock and die.
Yeah, I've only done a few shines in the first area so far, so maybe I'm bad with the controls, but my experience with the game has been messing up what should be easy jumps because I can't tell where Mario is on either the x y or z axis
It's definitely harder to grasp. Pretty much every move you make in sunshine is a huge commitment, especially dives. It's pretty fun when you get used to it though. Those commitments can have huge payoffs if you get it right.
@SmallAnt: in the cage shine sprite, the guy starring at the Mayor on the roof, the Mayor needed help moving box out of the man hole cover, so you should of went there and brake does box, and if you fall off, you can just used the under ground tunnel to go back up their as a short-cut instead of climbing back all the way up there, and the rocket nuzzle provide a check point to the shine sprite itself, if you fall off after getting the blue coins you can just get the shine sprite from the bottom, with the rocket nuzzle.
This was surprisingly frustrating to watch and my body made all these jumps with little Mario. I own that game too and I remember how much I struggled with the camera at first.
7:50 - I mean, remember, Koopa the Quick in SM64 *doesn't* kill you for losing a race, so they probably decided that wasn't a great idea, and they took that principle too far...
I didn't really mind the enemy count, hit detection was just a little off. The level design completely made up for the other problems, but they still bothered me. I really hope it'll get enough attention in the future to warrant a fan remake.
@@TheAbsol7448 actually there's a remake in the works as well as the sequel. I think it's only in its infancy right now (a few screenshots on twitter and nothing playable yet).
I knew how to do the jump around the tower at the start but I wasn’t there so I couldn’t tell you. The regular method is to spin jump around the vine, go into 1st person in midair and face the ledge, and then dive.
With rotating slopes, everyone always struggles but if you just keep dive jumping at a nice pace or run at an angle and pace similar to the rotating piece you never slide off, at least in my entire childhood I had never encountered frustration on slopes in any mario game beside darn 64
